MG4 Locked while Charging

Hi Folks!

New to the MG and EV universe, and have owned my new MG4 Trophy (74 plate) for just over a week now.
Only workplace charging (7KW) and no option to granny charge at home or use home charger.

The car was delivered with an 80% charge and this was my attempt at getting it charged up to 100% for a trip over the coming weekend.
I managed to get ZapMap/Amp apps sorted and managed to get the charging going.

But I was left with some amount of unease about how the car is left unattended with its "fuel cap" open.
Can someone please let me know that the car locks (safe enough so that no one can simply gain access to it) by a long-press on the remote and that's enough?

Do you mean the car or the cable lock? once charging it will stay locked until you unlock the car.
Once charging cable is plugged in or charging started, lock the car! It will stay locked. I believe even if the charging is terminated at source, the cable will remain locked in your car charging port.. the only way I can release my MG4 cable from the car is by unlocking the car.

One point to note about locking and charging, I've noticed that if you lock the car whilst charging on type 2 and then return and unlock it then it cancels the charging. If it's a CCS you can lock and unlock and it carrys on.

Cable locking on Type2/AC charging is controlled by the vehicle, so unlocking the vehicle unlocks the charge port and charging MUST pause else there’s a chance you could remove the cable while current is flowing.

On rapid / DC, cable locking is controlled by the charger.

My understanding is it restarts after a minute or so and after that it's unaffected by unlocking, I would be interested if anyone else can confirm that?

No confirmation one way or the other, but I believe that some models needed a firmware update to allow AC charging while unlocked.

If I unlock my Trophy whilst AC charging the charging resumes after a few minutes if it is not balancing. Accessing the boot does not interrupt charging because, as @phil99 says above unlocking allows the charging plug to be removed.

The plug must be re-locked on charging restart in the same way as starting the charge with the car unlocked.

Sometimes I want to reduce the charging current and can only do that from inside the car on the info screen.. this will stop the charge but pressing Start Charge usually sets it off again and car can be left unlocked.

Yes it's a pain when it stops charging. I have difficulty getting mine to start charging, it's booked in but not until 11th October. Dealer too busy rectifying MG4 problems lol.

Not necessarily true, not on AC anyway.. my cable port unlocks for a minute or so when I unlock the car whilst plugged in and awaiting an AC charge to start, it then relocks...
Whist charging it will also stop charging for a minute when I unlock the car. After this first sequence it will then remain charging regardless of car locking/unlocking.

Yes. If you unlock the vehicle, this includes the charge port. I didn’t think that was contentious.

I noticed that this weekend. A lot of faff with poor mobile signal to eventually get charging started. Then of course remembered I needed something in the car and had to unlock and lock again which stopped the charge.

I went on the website for the CPO to restart the charge but later realised I just needed to have waited maybe 30 seconds for the charging to restart.
