MG4 Range

From Manchester, I was on M56 this morning headed towards Chester, it was cold, miserable and very wet! Driving at between 60-65mph, I’ve achieved 3.7 miles/kw on standard mode with climate.
This bodes well for my stupid o'clock airport run the other way in a couple of weeks. (y)

I've come to realise that even though most EVs (and ICE cars) lose more efficiency at higher speeds, the MG4 seems worse than most, and the Trophy model with spoiler worst of all, a shame as otherwise a great car.
I think the fact that it's a hatchback is the fundamental problem as speed increases.
No coincidence that the model 3 and classic Ioniq with their streamlined bums can do much better at national limits, less turbulence and low pressure areas at the rear.

This is all true - but weight and tyre size will have more of an effect on efficiency given that most people most of the time aren't driving at 60mph+ so the MG4 probably beats or at least matches the Tesla for efficiency for typical driving.

Yep, and that was with 2 passengers with a full load in the boot, we were on our way to Aberystwyth, I think overall consumption was 3.8miles(probably ave 45mph on the A roads), but on my way back I was less restrained on M56, doing 70-75, consumption dropped to 3.6miles:
I did the same journey a few months ago, when the ambient temp was 27C and dry, think I managed well over 4miles.

Not sure if this is good charging rate?Supercharging in Aberystwyth, it was pulling 49kw at 85% and 28kw at 90%

I think it was pulling 54kw at 80%.

I was more than happy, we went to McD and ordered a takeaway, came back to the car 10mins later and it was already at 73%, too fast, ?

Hi here is a 70 mph range test done by Stuart Thomas in the MG4 SESR with at the end a comparison between the SESR and trophy LR.
I have achieved better figures then these in our SeSR but I don’t drive at this 70mph speeds for long periods I’m around the 62-65 mph, and in the summer months have seen over 4 mi/kWh several times at them speeds but interesting video for MG4 owners and any one thinking of buying one.
Thanks Stuart.
Les

As the video is 24 minutes and too long to watch, what were the figures ?

As someone who drove a model 3 for four years, I can tell you this is simply not true. The Tesla was significantly more efficient. I’d say it could be by as much as 20% but I’ll know by April next year when I have a full year’s figures for the MG4.

Results are at 21m45s (I didn't watch the whole thing, just scrubbed the video looking for charts)

Guess I was in minority to watch it all ? but regardless, the end results seem to confirm what many people are seeing - not only is the range of the SR and Trophy obviously different due to battery size, but the efficiency is also different with SR being better.
Whether that's due to the different battery chemistry or the spoiler, a combination of both, or perhaps something else entirely I don't know.
I'd like to see similar chart with the LR, to see which one the LR is closer to, but I suppose it's academic as we can't change our battery chemistry, and I doubt if anyone's gonna yank their spoiler off to eek out a few more miles.
Bottom line is comparing SR and Trophy range is pointless, it ain't apples with apples, might as well be comparing against a Tesla M3

Hence why I wish people would rem to mention which model they're driving when quoting range and efficiency figures, as I for one can't rem what ye all have ?, Please?

Although I accept your logic, I don't believe it's shape is the only reason.
To give example, my better half drives a Kia eniro that - on paper at least, has similarities to MG4, same battery size, power and range,
But the Eniro defo could not be considered an aero shape (much bulkier than the 4) but in identical journey comparisons (we sometimes swap cars) the Kia efficiency drops much less at the higher speeds than the MG, while at slower speeds the difference is minimal.

I can't explain why, and hard to see spoiler make such a difference (though I do accept Kia is dearer car and well known for having better range/eff than most, so better drivetrain or electrical efficiencies could be a factor)

Would be great if someone who has a LR might tell us if they think their eff figures are closer to the SR or Trophy??

You have to watch both videos ;). I do remember the Trophy test. He ended up taking a completely different route because of a road closure. Not a directly comparable test then, although his efficiency figures on the Trophy look about right based on my own experience.

Very interesting, Tesla do seem to have better efficiency than most others, not surprising they sell so many I guess.
As someone who compared many EVs before I opted for the MG4, I must admit my final choice was narrowed to just the 4 or the Tesla M3, and even when collecting my car (and even now if I'm totally honest) I wonder if my choice was correct.
Hopefully not hitting a nerve but you seem ideal person to ask about your real world comparison of both, are you happy with decision to change? - knowing what you know now.
Many reviews I've read/watched conflict on which is better overall package, lower price for MG swaying a lot, but many only have car for few hours/days and trust the specsheet, hence why Im asking you ,?

Very good, just watched it, remembered halfway through I'd seen it before ?, but valid point on different route.
Figures he got seem similar to what I'm getting also, so don't know how some are seeing so much better, I'm guessing their averages speeds much lower than mine ,?

I think I can say you have made a right choice of opted for the MG4, firstly the insurance have shot up, especially for a Tesla, and secondly, Tesla has brought out a facelifted version of M3, so if you had bought the M3, you’d have really peeved now!

Long story. Been driving EVs for seven years. First EV was a Nissan Leaf 30kWh. Back in 2019 I wanted an EV that could do journeys I’d traditionally done in an ICE ie down to the south of France on holiday. The Model 3 was the only car that would do it, essentially because of the supercharger network. Three years on, with secondhand prices high and a vastly improved charging network, I decided to recoup some of the cash I’d ploughed into the Model 3 and ordered an MG4. By the time the MG4 arrived, the market had fallen. I didn’t get what I’d hoped for but it wasn’t too bad. Loving the MG4 though. As it happens, I’m currently sat in the south of France having just driven the MG4 down here over the weekend almost entirely on the Tesla supercharger network. Any regrets? No, I wouldn’t go back to a Model 3 but could be tempted by a hatchback Tesla similar to the MG4. Only thing I really miss is Tesla autopilot on the motorway. Gains in the MG4 include more suitable body shape, Apple CarPlay and vehicle to load.

Check out my monthly reports on average efficiency posted in this thread. I drive normally and to speed limits. I started posting them to lend a bit of perspective to the efficiency posts on here.

Yes, I've read them, very informative ,?

Great stuff, thanks for detailed reply, glad your happy with decision, you've made me more comfortable with mine, in fairness I do love my MG4 as my first EV, last car was BMW420d so I half expected I might miss some refinement, power and comfort - but really pleasantly impressed with the Trophy on all fronts.
Not a bit jealous of being in South of France? Enjoy the holiday

PS; do you find the VTL works well? what output kW/Amps are you getting?
Did u buy official adaptor or get an eBay/Ali X cheaper option?

I bought it here Vehicle to Load Cables Not sure about those cheap EBay adapters. I’d rather buy from a trusted source, having dropped £32k on the car. I use it regularly to boil a kettle on my travels. Also used it to run camping electrics including a grill plate.

I use a cheap ebay V2L adaptor to run a dyson vacuum cleaner to clean the insides. Works fine. Not sure I'd leave it unattended, but it's going to be incredibly useful down the allotment if I can run an electric tiller off it.

My view on this would have been to just get a Tesla, the reason why I’m looking to cut my loss on the MG4 is not due to the car but MG/SAIC and there dealer’s.
Tesla may have bought out a refresh after its launch in 2017 but has updated the car software equally, even selling the components to retro fit early model Tesla’s bringing them up to speed with their 2023 counterparts and I would image will still support after the highland refresh is out.
On the other hand MG/SAIC has abandoned its customers of the phase 1 cars after 9 months, doesn’t know what is the latest software is for the cars, most can’t even update correctly and the only way for us to get it is to lie about a fault or you are charged hundreds of pounds.
Loyalty to the customer means a lot to me and it’s something MG motors uk has no perception.

:ROFLMAO: You should check out the Tesla forums. Packed with posts about poor customer service.
