MG4 Reduction Gearbox Oil Leak

Or just moved back to flogging Nissans, including the work of the devil, the e-Power. ;)

Miles was very helpful in giving us advanced information on the MG4 before its launch, and aftersales is not his remit. What we need is someone as helpful as him in MG to step up.

I believe that all cars will have this problem to some extent or another. Some people will never check under their car or only drive short distances at low speed so may not see it. But all are the same design so have the capacity to leak. The fix, although a bit Heath Robinson , seems to be a solution. So MG do the right thing and fit it to all cars and everyone will be at the very least reassured.

Exactly this, however MG so far seem very unwilling to admit it's a widespread problem. Would be interesting to see if all new cars over the next couple of months come with the new breather fitted(if it's not a big issue)

I would like to refer some of you here who are once again having a dig at Miles Robert’s, to re read in this thread on page 43 the posts at 841-842 and then please shut the - - - - UP there is no need for these stupid remarks that are being posted here so get off his back there is nothing more that he can tell us or do about it at this present time and if and when he can I’m dam sure he will.

I spoke with head service guy on Wednesday when I collected my car after the oil leak fix. He told me that they had received a warning to stay off social media and forums. I suspect @Miles Roberts CG may be between a rock and a hard place but I’d be happy for him to contradict me on that.

Apologies for my comment initially. I genuinely had a case of Mistaken identity. I believe now I know Miles refers to the chap who first posted about the MG here with some good information about it. He was very helpful and indeed my profile picture was taken from one of the pictures he had on. Absolutely beautiful and glittering in the showroom.

I mistook for a certain Mark Mills who regularly makes negative comments about the car on every single YouTube video in comments sections about how he had on order but cancelled because of different issues which he always names. Although to be honest now, I don't particularly blame him as I am seeing lots of people reporting one issue or the other and I get left feeling that MG rushed the product to market and could have tarnished what is otherwise a very fine and appealing motor with the shoddy finishiing that sees issues cropping up from software to mechanical and interior.

I think this is the fallout from the Gary Smart episode. Some of what was said and shared here probably lead to this. Not sure they have the power to dictate to dealers but they can certainly apply pressure.

I've said this before on here, but didn't get much response. I'm sure MG said a while ago that all MG4s will now have the oil empty and lower refill process done, and that this, in their opinion, is the fix, with the new breather being a (not really necessary) "belt and braces" add on.

What I don't know looking through this thread (unless I've missed it, which is possible), is if people are getting the leak after having this oil empty and lower refill process done, or if the drivers who are reporting a new found leak are those with the first batch of cars before this was being done.

My experience is that the oil leak returned after the level was lowered. A sample of one, but I have no reason to doubt that the work was done correctly.
I have no proof of whether the "leak" was from the breather or from the threads - there was too much to tell.

Like @BugEyed my car also had the oil level reduced and still leaked, as did the other three cars my dealership had at the time, none of them were fixed by lowering the oil level, all need the modified breather. It is clear now that MG communication is extremely poor which causes rumour and speculation and I wouldn’t expect that to change anytime soon. I have always been of the opinion that the reduction in level was a short term “bodge” to try and fix the problem and that there are many more vehicles affected than we know, for example all the owners who are not on this forum, many will have had leak and be blissfully unaware. MG should have communicated the issue to all owners, in my humble opinion!

Thanks both. So it really does sound like the new breather is more of a necessity than a "belt and braces". Hopefully all new deliveries are being fitted with the breather then, which would partly explain the long wait for mine from the docks to the dealer. I appreciate this doesn't help those MG4 owners who already have their cars, and who have the leak, or are (knowingly or unknowingly) waiting for the leak to arrive.

As others have experienced, my car came with the lower oil level and still developed the leak.

As was mentioned a couple of pages back, it sounds as though there's a lack of thread sealant on the original breather which could well be a simpler fix than a whole new breather, if that is indeed the issue
Sounds plausable as it would explain why some cars don't seem to have the oil leak.
