MG4 Restricted speed - weird

We had this after 2 software updates (after a 12v battery drain problem). 3rd time lucky, the dealer has fixed it. Car accelerates as briskly as normal all the way up. It should now be a recognised issue with fix at your dealer.
@chopduck do you have any more details of what your dealer did to fix it? Could you ask them if you don't know?

Dealer experiences are really inconsistent so this would really help others in the same situation make sure their dealer does the right thing,

Thanks for the feedback. Do you happen to know what the fix/update is? It'd be great to give the dealer a heads-up

We have to be very specific here.

What you and the other poster have described is limited power.
I.E. max 40% power from zero mph up to whatever mph 40% will get you.
There may well be a fix for this.

That’s not what I and others were/are getting though, we’re getting restricted speed.
I.E. full, or close to full power up to a certain speed, then the car just stops accelerating.
Then the power tumbles to the level it needs to be at to hold that restricted speed.

There are completely opposite issues.
The problem you and another poster have described would be easier to handle as you’d spot the issue from zero mph and you’d know not to try any overtakes etc

The rest of us don’t know we’re getting restricted speed until we’re maybe halfway past a truck and the car suddenly stops at 63mph (or whatever)

I have exactly the same issue as you. The acceleration issue is a new addition (well, only just noticed). So, I have both. But, yes, need to be specific and clear about the symptoms. I added these new symptoms to the thread as they may be related.

Not sure if I had this last week looking back. I’ve got a 2 week old Red Trophy. I drove home with about 15% battery and started to get ‘Turtle Mode’ at around 13%. This would disappear after a short regen but the power was limited if I tried to accelerate. It wasn’t a big problem till I went down to 8% and then it would refuse to go above 25% with permanent ‘Turtle Mode’ until I got home.

I only went this low on the battery as my Zappi failed to charge the car overnight.

That’s me FINALLY getting some money, it will be 5 weeks tomorrow since I dumped the car back at the dealer and 5 weeks on Tuesday since I got the confirmation of rejection letter from Santander (MG finance)

I had to send some really shitty emails and threaten legal action this week though, totally fed up of being ignored.

I’d still urge people to reject though, don’t put up with a faulty car when the law is on your side.

On the bright side, full refund, so effectively free motoring since November ?

Wow, that's a result and a relief. Super pleased you got a full refund, you deserve no less and really disappointing you had to go that route to get it sorted.

Hopefully you can now relax and enjoy your replacement car.

Maybe ask for interest on the money the owe you. Unreal.

the tech was taking the car out today to experience the power issue and at the same time have a live feed plugged into the car to get certain parameters for MG Motors to evaluate from what I gather.
the dealership said they would phone me back EOB today with an update.

edit.
these are the updates they did the other day. One of them was suppose to have sorted the power issue but obviously didn’t.
“As requested by yourself in regards to what has been updated on your MG-4, we have carried out multiple updates to the vehicles BCM, EMCU, SCU and IPK also configured the vehicles FDR.”
Got the car back today after another update.
MG gave the dealership an update for the BMS (battery monitoring system.)
upto now this seems to have done the trick. ?

If (and IMO it’s a massive if) this software update has fixed this issue, I’m so glad I was able to reject my car before it came around.

I just took my new car on a journey that involved fast dual-carriageway A roads and I was pleased to realise that there's no sign of this problem. In fact it's so damn quiet that you can be over 70 mph without realising it at all. It also performed well when overtaking, and when required to do a fast getaway at traffic lights. In fact my Golf sometimes suffered from front-wheel spin in that latter situation, but of course that's not an issue with the MG4 at all.

Just a bit of input to this, probably not terribly helpful. My car is in with MG Beaconsfield having this looked at. I mentioned the battery management software update.

After checking, there are a number of fault codes relating to the battery management software, however, it is on the latest version! So, they're now stumped.

They've gone back to the 'technical department', located elsewhere in the UK, awaiting advice.

The SW might be at the latest versions, but they might have been applied in the wrong order? (Miles mentioned in the last podcast that sometimes updates have to be applied in a specific order).

Soooo, i just heard back, and apparently, there is another version, which they had to get approval to apply (from this technical department). It's been applied, so, going to collect now ?? The guy did mention that it's a 'known problem' now, that this update is supposed to fix.

A “known problem” they will be proactive about and issue a recall…
Or one they will keep shtum about and wait for people to complain…

Meanwhile some poor sod will find themselves halfway past a truck and not being able to complete the overtake.

Soooo, I'm extremely disappointed to report, after a test run on the MK roundabouts test track, the problem persists ? It may be less significant, though it's 100% still there in a similar manner. SOC around 30-40% this morning. Also, this may be my imagination, but it feels as though at 100% it's not releasing full power, felt quite sluggish.

I really don't know if I have the motivation and energy to try get this resolved at the moment. Waited a month, traipse back and forward to a dealer quite far away (not my choice), had the update for the 'known issue', and still the same. The situation's made so much more difficult by the fact it's not consistently repeatable on demand.

Feeling quite deflated ?

Well you are more than welcome to use my case as a precedent for rejection (car Reg SP72 ZXA)
And I’m more than happy to assist in any way I can.
