MG4 SE 51 kWh real range

Had my first range angst attack just now. Had 58% when I left home (Mannum South Australia) to drive to Mt Barker SA 70 kms away. set it on ECO and 100 km/h on the cruise control ..... didn't really look when I arrived, a few places to get what I needed, back on the freeway and looked at the SOC .... 22%

So, I'd used 36% on ECO and cruise control to get there ....... the quick maths said 22% wasn't going to get me home if I chose to do the 110 km/h ...... Ended up behind a HK 186 6 cyl Monaro (circa 1968), fully restored and he was in no hurry to get anywhere

It didn't take long for 85 km/h to get to me, so I rounded him up and set it to 105 km/h. All the roads around this part of South Australia are either going up hill, or down the other side, just the angle changes ..... the % was not looking promising, nor the guess-o-meter .... so I reluctantly backed off to 95 km/h .....

By the time I reached the Monarto/Mannum Rd turn off, the triangle with the exclamation mark in it and the SOC bar had turned orange a while back, and the display said I had 11% left ...... I was impressed that I'd travelled that far on 11%, but the first time I drove this car, I somehow ended up in SPORT mode and had used 20% from fully charged by this point heading for the big smoke ......

Each km was regarded as 1 less I was going to be doing the walk of shame with the dog, a Chihuahua around 6 yrs old, loves a walk but 18kms might be pushing it a bit  Made it home with 6% remaining, not sure just what was going on, but I was certainly pleased to get home .... this car

No, Terry, do not start a journey of 88 miles on 58% in the SR. Trust me. But isn't it great the way you can hypermile yourself out of trouble anyway!

I suppose in your warmer climate that doesn't seem so mad as it does to me. I'd have been looking at the chargers on my way home if for some reason I'd had to do that.

And one chuffed chihuahua no doubt. 🤣

He kept standing on the centre armrest to see what was going on, he couldn't figure out why we were going so slow yet not turning into another road or the driveway ..... even the dog is critic it seems, if dad's driving and we are doing less than 100, either there is police car in front of us or we are about to make a turn

I wasn't turning the air con off .... unless it dropped below 5% .... so it was close

I was quite surprised how much driving a bit slower saved the battery drain, and actually using the go pedal gently rather than letting the cruise control return to previous speed saved ....... but the solar power is still free, so I'll just keep it in mind for next time I find myself a long way from home and very little SOC left ;)

It really does make a lot of difference. On long motorway trips I usually drive with the charger I'm heading for as the destination in Google maps, and keep an eye on that distance as compared to the range the car is showing. If the two numbers are uncomfortably close I'll just take 5 mph off the speed. That's generally all that's needed.

I have an odd situation returning home from the south. I've been on the M6 and then the M74 and going at a fair lick. Then I turn off on to the A701 at Moffat, and once through the town there is a steep climb up to the watershed and the Wells of Tweed. All that makes the remaining range look terrible of course. I know that once I've passed the county boundary sign it's downhill pretty much all the way for the remaining 27 miles and the range will recover, but I always lose my nerve a bit and cut the speed on the last motorway leg unless I've got a lot more charge than I need.

Solution for when it's too far for the dog to walk.

Thanks ,Terry we only use the car for short trips mostly, but i charged it to 100% a couple of days ago and it showed 395 km, we have only clocked up 1000km.

I think I've done well if it considers I have a possible 320km @ 100% and we have a whole 4950km on the clock now :D I might drive it a bit harder than you though

It hasn't done anything yet to change my mind about just how much I love this car ...... Learning how to set stuff up is a real challenge, but, little by little, we are learning new things, today's new thing, how to change the number of green bars it senses ahead .... I found 1 green bar seems to work best for me and avoids the tendency for it to slow rapidly when it sees a car coming the other way on a left hand bend and leaving a huge gap between another vehicle turning left.

It continues to surprise us with just how well it goes and how easy it is to drive in traffic ..... if you let it do the slowing down and stopping behind the car in front ...... it does need you to identify red lights though  especially if the rabbit in front floors it to make it through the lights before they change ..... The MG doesn't seem to care how many points you lose off your licence or how savagely they hit your wallet as it attempts to accelerate to catch up ......
