MG4 X Power Vibe/Hum 65 to 75mph

@Bricktop1967 As usual on forums such as this, there is a whole load of pure speculation from people making educated guesses at best, I include myself in that.

If this is a problem you still want resolved (after you have tried wheel balancing), I'd advise seeking out an independent specialist (as I did for my air-con) to obtain an engineers report on the issue. You can then present that to your dealer's 'Technician' so you are going in fully armed to claim under warranty and not just with your 'suspicions' of a fault, which is when many dealers will try to fob you off.
Anyway, good luck with the issue.
Much obliged PristDean.

As you have already read, people are feeling it to a greater and (in my case) a lesser degree.
I am sure someone will be handing one back to a dealer at some point and I will be keeping an eye on their progress.
That is of course only if they choose to make the journey public by posting on this forum.

I am comfortable in the knowledge, that I brought this issue with the car to my dealers attention within a week of collection, (dealer principal and service department) so if some sort of "fix" becomes apparent, I will get it done.

I notice the vibration issue has also been discussed at length on another thread. It seems everyone who knows anything about the XPower, including dealers, is aware of it. I’m beginning to wonder whether I should cancel my order.

Have you tried one?
Have a test drive and see what you think.
As I've said before this will affect different people in different ways.
One persons mountain, is another persons molehill.

Not withstanding what Ive said above, there is definitely a "characteristic" with the MG4 XPower, that is just not there on a rear wheel drive MG4.

Yes I took a test drive before placing my order but not on the motorway. Didn't see a need at the time. I think it would really bug me if every trip along an M road meant continuous vibration through the steering wheel. You're right, I haven't experienced it in person, so it's hard to know how much weight to give it. But there's enough discussion on here to make me wonder. Unfortunately I'm the kind of person this would p*** off.

Not unfortunately m8!

You, me, anyone of us, shouldn't have to put up with a faulty Brand New Car!
And despite many folk describing it as "cheap, so what do you expect!!!"
36k is a lot of money to me and I would like to have driven off into the sunset without a care in the world.
But.......here we are.?

Today I noticed it in on my xpower, but to be honest if I hadn’t read about it hear I wouldn’t have probably noticed it, it is quite minor and often masked by road surfaces noises. Now I have read about it (you can’t unlearn something!) I will probably nioice it more. It is quite minor and for me nowhere near a reason not to buy the xpower. I’m luv’in it! There is little like that overtaking power, where you easily safely overtake slower cars and even the car in front that just overtook the slow car! Woosh gone into the distance. For people in reviews to say it is not as much fun as rear drive mg4 se haven’t driven the xpower properly. And if you really want rear wheel drive only then drive in in eco mode, which I do a lot to calm the passenger.

For interest if you had paid £26,000 more for a kia ev6 gt you could be suffering this: “drove a GT at the dealer as well as watched some in car reviews. All the GTs seem to have a whine/resonance at 52-56.” - EV6 GT Front vs Rear motor noise/harmonics

something I also noticed on an ev6 test drive. Too whiney.
loving my xpower.

Thanks Fred. I decided to proceed with the order on the basis the warranty covers anything serious. I'll ensure however that I raise the issue with the dealer in person before taking delivery and refer them to this thread. Might as well put it all on the table before paying the balance.

Dont know what happened there, must have had my invisibility cloak on!
Anyway as an EV6 RWD driver there is a slight whine but nothing to spoil things. Have not driven an AWD version in anger only on test drive, but again no issues. It does seem to vary car to car as in the case of the XPOWER, definitely not putting me off.

Nice review. These good reviews and my own experience of this car just really show up how bad that Top Gear magazine review was saying it wasn’t a hot hatch, ridiculous, of course it’s hot!

Car reviews are a bit like phone reviews. You can easily put too much weight on the ones produced by industry hacks. Alongside my work-issue iPhone I have a far cheaper Chinese Android phone. If you believed the reviews you'd never touch the latter. In fact it's brilliant. Battery, screen, camera, refresh rate etc. Oh and the price. And it blows away range-topping phones released two years earlier. In some ways it's better than the iPhone but I'd never have known this without owning it.

When I see people saying the Xpower doesn't have the cornering finesse of a Golf R I think to myself, sure, that might be true, but my Android phone camera does the job just fine given what I paid.

Remember as well we are deeply into First World Problem territory here.

Agreed. iPhones are made in China too - it just goes to show that they can make quality products, it is all about which market they are aiming at.

.....Looking forward to some of you guys commenting later as I know a couple of you are out and about "testing".....

As promised earlier I have been out testing for 210 miles this weekend up and down the A1 (visiting relatives in Newcastle). My experience is very similar to yours. In summary :-

  • For me (or perhaps my car?) it is so mild it is not an issue at all.
  • It seems to come and go, even at similar speeds which is odd
  • The worst I got was at 68 on an uphill gradient which felt like unbalanced wheels on a poor surface
  • This lasted about 20 seconds and then as the gradient flattened out it improved.
  • Cruising or setting the ACC to 74 everything was fine, no vibe feeling at all in any circumstances.
  • Changing the drive modes during the vibe made no difference.
  • It seems to be worse for me at aound 68 - 70 but only some of the time.
  • Probably worse accelerating gently up through the range than down
  • At, or above 74 nothing was felt at all
  • On some stretches of road I could'nt feel it at all even when trying.
  • My passenger (Mrs G) did'nt notice anything at any time.
  • Car was in ECO mode and High Regen mainly but I flicked through the modes - no difference

Conclusions for me (with my car anyway) are :-

  • Yes, there is some vibe at around 68'ish but not all the time
  • It seems to come and go (road surface ? gradient) - I really can't explain what !
  • It can easily be avoided by going a tad faster or slower when it occurs
  • It would not put me off the car at all and I'm very glad I purchased it ?

Note: 74 on the clock is pretty much a real 74 ... the MG4's speedo is very accurate. Whilst plod likely won't bother, speeding is still an absolute offence with mitigation unlikely to work, so something to bare in mind. :)

Thanks for that JonnyG.

I've taken to just doing 75, as the mild vibe just disappears, which in all honesty is slower than I used to go all the time anyway (where conditions allow?)

My Nextbase Dashcam has a GPS, which I have verified using a GPS App on my phone.
The speedos on our cars (MG Brand in particular??) are, as has been pointed out by siteguru and others, (including myself) seem to be extremely accurate.

For as many years as I can remember I have always done a GPS verified 77mph, which on a lot of my cars was an indicated 85mph.(Conditions permitting of course)
I have never been pulled over.

Honestly never.

Maybe I've been lucky, but my many experiences of over taking "Jam Sandwiches" as we used to call them, at that speed shows me that The Fuzz are looking for people taking the "P"

This has been confirmed to me by the many, many, different Cop shows on TV over the years (Police Interceptors for example)
Where they seem to only pick people doing a genuine 85mph+

I've never seen them clock anyway at, say, 75mph, Shout " Look at that F-in Lunatic! and take off after them!!

Before anyone jumps in to tell me how dreadful I am for breaking the law....
CONDITIONS PERMITTING!!!
What about you guys?

I didn't know that it could be put into RWD only mode, do you have any more info about this about this?

I am pretty tempted to get the Xpower, and I'd like RWD only for day to day use, and would be happy to swap to 4WD when needed.

Also the autobahn is a nice place go if you ever need to legally go above 70 ;)
