MG4 X Power Vibe/Hum 65 to 75mph

Strange that vibration felt through the steering wheel (?) which is sorted by replacing a rear driveshaft only affects cars which have a front motor?
Vibrations are a real challenge - like squeaks they can start somewhere and propagate.

My guess is the XPower suspension is already different in some way hence why it shows up on this model.

It makes more sense it would be down to the two motors... but if it was that simple everyone would experience it and changing tyres etc... would not have the same effect, at least I assume.

It will only be fixed for sure when people can receive a definitive retrofix for their cars, like the undertray and oil leap fix v3.

If it's to do with rear suspension, we know that the Xpower rides higher than the others - has anyone noticed any difference in the vibration with the car carrying a heavy load in the rear (two large adults and/or stuff in the boot)?

If that's correct, then its good news for all you X power owners because it signals that MG have formally acknowledged that there was an ongoing problem with the original models. ?????????
Acknowledging something internally is different to acknowledging publically and because this is unlikely a safety issue there is unlikely to be significant external regulatory pressure on MG to retrofit vehicles so I reckon it will be down to the calculation in MG's head of cost of retrofitting it versus cost to consumer confidence if they don't....

There’s one ER owner claiming some vibes at 70mph in another thread.
There might be a connection.
It might be down to a particular batch of drive shafts used mainly on the Xpower and then used on ER too in some production runs.
Tbh unless this is causing catastrophic failure of the rear assembly I think patience might be warranted.
The Xpower was the first and still cheapest sub 4 second car and I want MG to succeed

Dealer said after Speaking with MG Australia is they are manufacturing parts for a fix on 2023 models ..

The mechanic/ foreman said that he will follow the paper trail to keep me updated on when it’s ready ..

In the mean time I need to go back to the dealer next week to do the latest software update as it’s so far behind and it’s a over 2 hour process to update it properly..

But hats off to Ferntree gully MG in Victoria Australia very helpful and actually listened to my concerns and offered great advice!!

agreed its strange but even more funny when you switch to eco which disengages the front motor the vibes stop..

vibrations travel though the car 100% yes they can but to actively stop it by disconnecting the front motor doesnt make sense its a rear shaft

That has never happened for me.

One of the first things suggested last year.

In your case there might be other issues in which case I’d get tyres/wheels checked.

Can’t be tires or wheels otherwise the vibe would get worse the faster you go ..

Yet if it stops when eco is engaged it can’t be wheels or tyres otherwise it would still be there

same with people saying it smooths out after 120km 130km if Something is out of balance it has to get worse the more revolutions it makes

Absolutely. I’d still get the tyres and wheels checked: the might be balanced but there might be a resonance which can be felt when the front motor is connected, which might be from the front stafts in your case. Or maybe something else. Let’s just rule out the basic easiest parts first.

Worryingly, my Trophy has started a slight vibe and audible hum in 60's mph upwards on motorways.
Feel around the tread edges of your tyres. You might have what is called castellated/stepped/sawtooth tyres caused by the tyres being wrongly inflated or the tracking being out.

I finally went out on a decent run today and I was mistaken in my original diagnosis, I do have the vibe.

Has Watchdog been considered to highlight these issue in the UK?

I had an issue with Virgin Media some years ago which got resolved eventually after a watchdog article that caused VM some bad press.

They can't call vibration a characteristic, well they have but they shouldn't, it does take a while to get Watchdog involved but it's been ongoing for some time anyway. The sticking plasters they are trying are an admission of guilt in my eyes, if there wasn't a problem they wouldn't be charging a thing.

Just a thought, what do others think?

The vibe is meant to be quite noticeable. Are you sure it’s not just the subtle vibrations from under inflated tyres? I got that a lot with the stock tyres, a bit less with what I have now, but only if tyres are under inflated. Temperatures have dipped: my tyres were at 2.6 bar in the morning all last week until yesterday when they went down to 2.35 and got the warning.

Temp was about 14° and tyres at 2.6 bar all round, it was noticeable today but not very bad.

I think when I tested it may have been me not knowing what to look for and the road surface being quite poor and causing vibrations anyway so there was no real change as such. My exuberant right foot may have also been an issue, I'd just had the car on a quiet road traffic wise so I was also testing acceleration possibilities, obviously for safety reasons so when I'm overtaking traffic on single carriageways I know the capabilities :)

I definitely felt a change today when driving over 65ish.

I will try adding pressure to the tyres, I read someone on here using 40 psi to remove some of the vibration, well I think I did :)

Twas I.

40psi definitely made a difference in my case.

But a slight vibe is still there and I want it fixed.

And with all the pressure MG are being put under, I'm sure it will be.

What I have noticed is mine is worse on uphill gradients on smooth sufaces above around 66mph and a bit above. It's hardly there the rest of the time and then suddenly I start to feel it.

Checked the tyres and they are nice and smooth. I'll take it out tomorrow and measure the hum frequency. Let's see if it is anywhere near the xpower hum...
