MG4 Trophy LR

A week ago, I made the switch from the MG5 FL to the MG4 Trophy. The main reasons for the change were the smaller size and the improved efficiency, which provides a slightly longer range.

I was slightly concerned about the smaller boot, but in reality, it’s not that much smaller. I’ll get a better sense of this next week when I take one of my regular trips to France to visit my mum with my two girls.

Pros

  • Driving experience – The MG4 is much nicer to drive, with a fantastic turning circle that makes parking and navigating London much easier.
  • Efficiency – Noticeably better efficiency, averaging about 1 mile/kWh more than the MG5.
  • Interior space – The cabin feels more spacious, especially in the back. This is likely due to the MG5’s larger centre console taking up room.
  • Charging port location – The rear-side charge flap is a huge improvement. It’s much safer when public charging in London—on the MG5, I had several cars hit the front-mounted cable. The higher placement also makes plugging in easier. The charge status lights and flap-open warning are great features. I once drove on the motorway with the MG5’s flap open, which led to an expensive repair. Hopefully, replacing the MG4’s flap would be far simpler if needed.
  • Ride quality – The MG4 feels smoother and more planted on the road, whereas the MG5 sometimes felt heavier and had a slight rolling/wobbling sensation.
  • CarPlay reliability – While not bad in the MG5 (with the right cable), CarPlay seems to drop out less frequently in the MG4.
  • 360° camera – Much improved over the MG5. It provides a clearer overhead view and better visibility around the car.

Cons

  • Lack of 11kW AC charging – I rely on public charging, and the MG5’s 11kW AC support was a useful bonus.
  • No roof load capacity – While I didn’t use it often, I liked having the option of carrying something on the roof with the MG5.
  • Wireless phone charger – It’s unreliable. It works sporadically, and any road bump causes the phone to shift and stop charging. Plus, since CarPlay requires a wired connection, the wireless charger feels a bit redundant.

Final Thoughts

I loved my MG5 FL while I had it, but the MG4 Trophy is simply the better car. The improvements in efficiency, driving dynamics, and practicality make it a great upgrade!

I had a MG4 for two weeks while my 5 was in the garage. With the 5 I could jump in wait for the clunk then drive off. In the 4 I found myself turning off a few bits before driving and when it came to getting out I did not like it staying on until I locked it up.
What m/kWh were you getting in the 5 compared with the 4 as I found them similar this weather.

Hi, probably worth saying I got the 4 with R63 software update which I think fixed loads of issues like LKA. So I was lucky in that sense. I have found I do not need to change any settings when I get in. Just go with defaults or the settings I have changed that save.

Keeping in my mind I live in London with a lot terrible traffic. At the moment I was averaging close to 2.0 mi/kWh in the 5 and about 3.0mi/kWh in the 4.

Obviously when out of London I getting better numbers.

Hi
I am also looking to go from mg5 trophy to MG4 trophy . Are you saying the MG4 does not come with a home charging cable ?
Thanks

Ok sorry I just read again lol . Take no notice I read it wrong
Thanks for your input.

I am not 100% sure what it was meant to come with but I asked for 3 pin and type 2 when negotiating.

I would also make sure they are doing all software updates. Some dealer do not seem to do this.

Also a new for me today. Check under the rear of the car for any downward bulge in the plastic under tray. This is a known issue with a fix. Mine I noticed has a little so I am going to keep and eye on it to see if it gets worse.

PS I grow more positive every day I made the right switch. Nipping round town is a joy in the 4.
