My MG5 has two keys, but only one has the key blade. I assumed the other one had dropped out without me noticing. I had the car in for a service last week and asked them to order a spare. This seems to be a convoluted process but what surprised me was that the dealer said the cars only come with one blade.

Can anyone confirm that? Does everyone only get one blade?

When I got my car (Facelift, used but only 4k miles) the pack had a tie-wrap with a long number. I presumed that this was the key number and took it with me to the dealer. He said it wasn't the key number - apparently, MG don't have key numbers. The dealer requests a key blade from MG, citing the VIN, and they get one cut by Bolton Locks(?) But when I did a search for Bolton Locks, it came up with a family business which operates out of what looks like a timber workshop. It's doubtful that MG would source their key blades from there - the Bolton Locks web site says it gets their keys from the manufacturer, which makes it an infinite loop:

"All locks are sourced direct from the manufacturers or from one of their authorised distributors to ensure that the highest levels of quality and reliability are maintained."

Again, can I ask if anyone has had to order a spare blade, and did they get the same story from their dealer?

It just doesn't sound right but, if it's not correct, I don't understand why this dealer would be fobbing me off with nonsense?

Thanks for your replies. Looks like the dealer was giving me duff information. I don't understand why.

Could I have misunderstood what he told me? I doubt it - the story he gave was so convoluted that, even if I didn't get some of the detail, the essence was unmistakable.

I was in Dundee this morning and ordered a blade from the MG dealer there. £103.20. OUCH - memo to self … don't lose it again, use a bit of tape to stop it falling out. On the other hand, £100 is very little compared to the £££ I've saved in electricity versus petrol.

I'm pleased to report that this dealer, unlike the previous one, was very helpful. It wasn't any bother. I had my V5 with me, correctly assuming they would need evidence of entitlement to a key. They also asked for my driving licence which confirmed that I was the person listed on the V5 as the keeper (I hadn't anticipated that but, on reflection, it shows due diligence).

They'll call me when it arrives - about three weeks. I don't suppose I'll ever need to use either of the blades. But, like insurance and a lot of other things, you don't need it until you need it!

One last thing - I had the Tesla software update done at service a couple of weeks ago. While in Dundee I popped into the Tesla hub to see if the was working. IT WAS!

Oh happy, happy, day.
