The Avenger was a good looker.
A me-too version of the Mk1 Escort and better looking than the Mk2. I especially like the Tiger. Being well over 6', my father-in-law had to sell the DL version one that he inherited because he couldn't get comfortable in it! Look how small these older cars look now in comparison to the ever-expanding hefty-looking car models that keep appearing. The Avenger was a good looker.
I used to hire Avengers in the 70s, there was quite a difference in torque between the 1300cc and the 1600cc ones. Loved the Sunseeker version, orange with the white leatherette roof. A mate had an automatic one, not the sprightliest thing. The Avenger was a good looker.
My ultimate pride and joy was a Vauxhall Cresta 1962 2.6 ( pale blue ). Bought it at the mart for £40. Body from baywatch. Chassis from crimewatch. So much rust. Felt like a Hollywood Star. But jacked it up to change a bulging tyre, after which the doors wouldnt shut. The sill went upwards, but not the rest of the car. £5 scrap I recall. Only drove it about 20 miles or so.Well, before I mucked up the engine on mine by forgetting the antifreeze, I got hit by a car which pulled out of a parking space in a supermarket car-park. Deep gouge right down one side of my car. In the insurance claim I got more for the car (which was written off) than I paid for it years earlier (£185 IIRC), plus I bought it back and used it for another couple of years. On a previous occasion I was taking a solid old unwanted wardrobe on the roof-rack to the local tip in Southampton. I failed to spot the height restriction in time and hit it at about 20mph. The wardrobe remained firmly fixed to the roof-rack (a surprising outcome considering my knot-tying abilities), and the roof-rack (with wardrobe securely attached) got pushed off the back of the car along the roof gutter and onto the boot. So I pressed on and because the roof-rack was badly damaged I just dumped the wardrobe and roof-rack ensemble at the tip without even untying them and went home. There wasn't a scratch on the car.
Although I loved the Hunter, I now consider that the earlier Audax range were much prettier and would dearly love an old Gazelle, Vogue, Rapier, Superminx. But I'm just not willing to part with £5k for an oily rag.
No problem. Anyway, my MG5 is going into the garage for it's new gearbox ( or other rotating bits ) on Wednesday. The dealer is great though. Got exactly the same car, even colour, as courtesy car. Just hoping the spares aren't in a container in a slowly drifting cargo ship having a 10 week cruise in the north atlantic.Apologies for taking your thread off topic BTW![]()
There's a white Cresta about 5miles from where I live. Massive great thing always kept under cover. Back then the bodywork of most cars would not last more than 10yrs if you were exceptionally lucky. Now, most cars still look nearly-new after 20yrs. My Clio had virtually no rust underneath when I pensioned it off aged 19. I also part-own (with my sons) a 31yr old Peugeot 250 GTI. Again the underneath is almost like new - I think this was when decent galvanising was starting to come onstream. My ultimate pride and joy was a Vauxhall Cresta 1962 2.6 ( pale blue ). My friend calls this noise "Tron mode"Hi sparky just wondering in the first part of your post from Wednesday last you wrote
My MG5 makes a high pitched motor/transmission whine when accelerating or slowing, especially at lower speeds. Quite a nice soothing sound actually.
Now with the Lower speeds is what I’m looking at could it be the Pedestrian alert system that your hearing this seems to operate from around 0-18mph when speeding up and 18-0mph when slowing down not sure if you know about this but it’s just as you describe it an high pitch whine long shot but could it be?
When I first got my 5 I wondered if I had a fault until it was explained to me it was my next door Neighbour who said to me what’s that Noise it’s making sounds like a jet, so I started trying to find out and came across the pedestrian alert system which it is designed to do to alert pedestrians , I forgot about this just trying to help as your new to the car having only done 450 or so miles this is the problem with this forum when people list things your mind starts ticking and you can lose sleep if you go in to far LOL

Yes, will do. I've pretty much stopped driving the MG5 the last 10 days. Don't want to risk any other rotating bits. Driving my really old Volvo since then..., I feel like Fred Flintstone!. What a racket!. Looking forward to collecting Mg5 courtesy tomorrow. A return to the futureWell sparkgoat im so please you have yourself a good dealer and it’s going to get sorted so quickly for you please keep us update

Hi sparkygoat and thanks for your update more to come when you get your own car back I hope take careBeen driving the Mg5 courtesy car for a few weeks now. This one is silky smooth and really quiet. Hills just cease to exist. The more I drive it the more I like it. Still makes me stand and scratch my head. How on earth can they make a big, fast, comfortable nice looking EV estate ( I think it looks great in red ) with this performance, range, gadgets and economy for only £23,000 ? The only other EV I've fancied is the Hyundai Kona but even the basic model is £15k more than the Mg5 and the boot's way too small for me. Even going for straight diesels I'd looking at Astras, Ceeds and the like at this price. ( yawn ) So, no contest, not even close. Still waiting for bits for my own Mg5 but with the 7 year warranty and really good dealer support I'm not too worried. I've had a right old scour around all the other forums and I can't see anyone else reporting reliability issues.
