Motorway 80 mph - miles per kWh

I'm not yet a MG4 owner but seriously considering one and looking for some information, I been searching everywhere to get some efficiency figures for the MG4 when it's driven at a steady 80 mph. I often go to Germany and thats my usual motorway cruising speed. Everybody on this forum never reports any figures above 70 mph in terms of typical miles per kWh. Somebody here must have an idea for higher speeds?

Drag increases at the square of the speed, that 10 mph extra will cost you dearly. Our MG5 gives 5.5 miles/KWh around town and local driving, motorway at 60 mph that drops to around 4.2 at 80 mph it drops down to around 3.4 miles/kWh. I would imagine the MG4 will be similar. Overall journey time if you need to stop more to charge can be longer by driving faster.

The national speed limit may have something to do with the lack of feedback above this speed.??

There must be others like the op that drive in Germany

Your suggestion of being careful about what you say on here is a good one, I speak from personal experience yesterday with certain members ones which sink to unbelievably low levels.

We used to have a Zoe and Renault figures stated this for a Zoe :-

"Keeping at an average speed of 130 km/h lets you cover around 215 kilometers. Cutting the average speed to around 110 km/h extends the vehicle’s range on a single charge to 250 kilometers."

That's around 17% less efficient by my estimation from 110kmh to 130kmh (68mph to 80mph)?

I know it's not an MG4 but at least it gives you some idea of range drop and hence efficiency.

@Rolfe may be able to give a bit of assistance on this as she doesn't tend to hang about ?.

I would have thought somewhere around 3 miles/kWh but temperature will play a large part.

In our X-Power, I only get around 3.1 miles/kWh at 70 mph so would expect ~2.3 at 80mph. LR obviously a bit more efficient but still wouldn't bank on more than ~2.6 miles/kWh.

Always staggers me how inefficient SAIC managed to make the MG4 at speed, given that it was a ground up EV design. Our Tesla model 3 would give 3.8 miles/kWh all day long at 80mph and 4.3+ at 70 mph.

Teslas are highly optimised for efficiency in ways difficult for other manufacturers to reproduce. They are very vertically integrated and much less dependent on supplier efficiencies than most, including MG. It is a real strength of Teslas.

That said, the way they work also brings idiosyncrasies that can be off-putting like the lack of buttons, lack of stalks and closed infotainment solutions etc...

The MG4 has a decent efficiency by the standards of most other manufacturers and efficiency is pretty irrelevant if your car meets your range needs, which in Europe most makes now do.

About 2.5 miles/kwh, in not-too-warm conditions. Don't ask me how I know.

Poor compared to what?

Just checked and the average ICE car uses 40% more fuel at 85mph than 70mph.

Compared to an ICE car it's pretty much the same. Drag is always the killer at speed, and ICE car that would give you 50 mpg at 40-60 mph would drop easily to 28 at 85 mph.

You can certainly do better with a slippery shape, one reason why I think the Aptera will be particularly good for motorway journeys.
