Stolen from the MG4 Facebook group which no doubt has a large overlap in membership.

Allegedly there is a new MG4 under development in China.

New generation MG4 hatchback revealed in China

Looks similar but a bit more blobby and less sporty.

Bit like a Ford Puma I thought. Or a big MG3 or a mini Model Y.

Possibly this would be a version for the Chinese market only.

On the other hand, if they were planning to roll it out in the UK that might explain the massive discounts on new MG4s we are currently seeing.

Thoughts?

I had heard from a dealer mid February that the current MG4 had now finished its production run and that a new restyled model would be released September this year, and yes it does account for the massive discounts across the current range.
The new car seems to have elements of both the new MG ES5, and the MG3. The styling is not as sharp as the current version. Maybe it's the way MG is going with a blend of similar styles across its range of cars.

It’s an unusual business model (not saying it’s a bad one, just unusual) completely replacing a model within 3 years, especially when it has sold well.
Maybe it’s to appeal to a different demographic, as I imagine most MG buyers will be new to the brand.
It also follows the more rounded Merc EQA/BYD/Kia Lexus UX body style by the look of it.
If I hadn’t looked at the dimensions I would have assumed it to be a smaller EV to compete with the likes of the Hyundai Inster or Dacia Spring.
I guess it’s not great news for us MG4 owners when we look to trade in, I assumed the MG4 would run for another 4-5 years with maybe a minor facelift 2 years from now…

It is still possible that there will be an MG4 for China and an MG4 for export to countries like UK, AusNZ and Thailand, given that there are different tastes.

They aren't selling any in China by all accounts so they need to do something different.

Good point about the Lexus - I see one of those in a nearby estate and I know what you mean.

Well if sales of it drop off a cliff compared to the current mg4, they will only have themselves to blame.

By the looks of it because SAIC have a few brands they kind of mix and match what badge to put on what model. At least that's the impression I get by looking at the website linked in the article.

Vast improvement - sorry - I was never a fan of the current MG4. Don’t like the “folded“ shape of the rear end. That’s why I went for the five estate car.
I’ve happily gone over (back) to the Citroen e Berlingo but look forward to see the new MG estate car now that I see this new direction for the 4.
