Petrol v Electric cars. ??

To be fair John, it would depend on the type of journey. The electric takes over in short slow journeys, when the ICE would be at its most inefficient. This really aids overall economy.
I understand that BUT generating electricity from an ICE ir horrendously expensive, add to that the extra weight results in the real world of no gain. They do tick the boxes for tax, road tax and BIK though.

The latest Toyota hybrids ( generation 5?) are even better.
I'm sure they are and the improvements will have been made via weight reduction and/or ICE improvements making it more efficient. I still maintain though that the removal of the hybrid weight would make it even more efficient.

I have to agree. I’m in the middle of my camping trip to the glorious west of Scotland in my effortless and relentless MG 5.
It was a pretty steep rough road out of the campsite this morning and the amount of noise and revving, smoke and smell from the diesel camper vans from six o’clock was diabolical, the petrols weren’t much better.
The five just whispered and was out on the road

I would like to agree with both of you........ but then we would all be wrong!

This was a bit more balanced in letting those new to EV's know a bit more about how they work, and how they are different to ICE vehicles.

A question on safety while using the Granny Charger:-

At the video point 5:17, it shows a granny charger being plugged into an outside wall socket. The socket itself is waterproof but can the "BLACK BOX" part of the granny charger be left out in the rain?

there is nothing I can find in the handbook - pages 136 to 151?

Mine is plugged inside the garage. Does anyone know or use an outside socket for their granny charger?

I've had mine out in the rain before. However I try to raise it up off the ground (on stones or a brick - whatever is available) and also tuck it under the car; likewise for the extension lead I use, which I also wrap up in a plastic carrier bag for added protection.

just surprised there is no information in the handbook (online). I appreciate your caution.

Have a look at the IP rating on the box, you want IP67:-

"If a product has an IP67 rating, that indicates it is "waterproof."

The 6 indicates "complete protection against dust over extended time" as well as "protection against contact with objects greater than 1mm in diameter, such as a wire or a small tool."

The 7 indicates the system is "protected against short periods of immersion in water while under pressure between 15cm and 1m."

I'm following you, 24 hours behind, and apart from flatly refusing to boil my kettle this morning, Caliban has been faultless. (VtL working again now. No idea what went wrong. A couple of German tourists watching in astonishment as I inflated my air mattress using the car's power.) Camp site owner quite impressed when I explained about the HVAC staying on all night and how comfortable it is.

I quite fancy Muile tomorrow, if the ferry fits in as well as the Corran ferry did.

It was a really good format, we had hundreds of the broadcast versions in our edit suits. It wasn’t all good though…. It spawned the ‘Reality TV’ genre. And look how well that went! ?
Do you do transfers to mpeg?

Sorry, no idea how. I just have a pile of tapes deteriorating in the garage.

I did not realise you slept in the car!
Wow!

Aye Corran ferry was good to me too. Then this afternoon as I came down to Lochaline ferry slip the boat just nosed round the corner as if by special order.
Oh - and very tasty coffee at the wee kinda plain cafe in Strontian, I enjoyed a vegetarian breakfast and there’s loos and a CPS charger round the back.
I was also involved in a mutual appreciation meeting in the car park with a guy driving a black MGB from Wales, east Scotland, the NC500 and onwards to some islands after chalking up the most westerly bit today. Both cars were shining, I liked the condition of his, he liked the silence of mine but the coup de grâce was the upstairs bedroom with en suite on mine ??

Oh how I agree! They did that deliberately to demonstrate that it takes longer to charge, than fill up with petrol. Totally daft! We all know that charging is slower, but we probably charge up overnight, cheaply and easily while we snooze……..

But then later in the program, they compare boot space, when the Tesla won. Daft again. Comparing apples with oranges and therefore pointless. I would imagine the final score will be even.
Clearly funded by Legacy Auto / Oil industry, much like BS reporting on low EV demand. We all know EV are massively superior in every dept save for very long range or charging everywhere. And these points will be eliminated as battery energy density doubles over next 5 years along with charging infra.

It depends on how the measurement is done.............

ICE
Drive up to a petrol pump, open the cap, put the nozzle in the filler pipe, dispense the fuel, replace the nozzle, fit the filler cap, clean your hands from the smelly diesel laden nozzle, go into the shop, queue and pay. Probably 6 or 7 minutes in reality.

Electric
Drive up to the rapid charger, connect swipe card, lock car. probably 90 seconds
Go for a coffee / toilets etc
Return to charger, stop the charge, close the charge flap, depart probably less than 60 seconds. Total 2.5 minutes and no diesel laden hands / clothes.

Totally daft! We all know that charging is slower, but we probably charge up overnight, cheaply and easily while we snooze……..
or go to the cinema / shopping / dining out. You cant refuel ICE unattended in terms of time out of your day ICE talkes more in most cases.

Crazy and pointless program.

Had this discussion with my son re trip from south to Edinburgh. He stated that I would not take the EV because of the time it takes to charge on long journey, actually he had the same number of stops it would take me to have a rest and snack, so no real difference

I've noticed that since I've upgraded from the 30kwh / 50kw charging kia soul to the MG4 1. I don't have to stop for charging half as much on long journeys and 2. It's sooo much faster I can hardly keep up with it, especially on the Tesla chargers. Just pop in for a coffee, ooops, charge has finished. Quite grateful for it slowing down a bit towards the end ??

It seems to me the charging cycle has been matched to the urinary cycle, stop to charge, cup of coffee, back on the road. Full bladder equals the time when the battery says, more please. Empty one and re-fill. Re-fill the other, there's a nice symmetry to it. Shame the coffee is so expensive.

Quite.

The net saving is with EVs - I haven't visited a conventional filling station once since having an EV due to home charging.

If I factor in all the saved time there vs. the occasional long trip where I publicly charge, I am willing to bet it is at least even, if not a net time saving.

For me it's a huge time saving, almost exclusively charging from home I have only ever had to charge away from home a few times (without problems). Not having to visit petrol stations is just brilliant (especially when there is a shortage and they are all queing up and snapping at each other).

I have the unfortunate circumstance of being a school minibus driver and have to fill it with dirty diesel at least once a week. Uurgghh the memories. Smelly place, queues more often than not, both at the pumps and the till ( which I have to use to get a receipt) and this morning pumps 2,3,4,7&9 were out of diesel!!. I do enjoy driving past petrol stations in the MG4 when there are excessive queues for 'cheapest petrol around ' ( Sainsburys, Wolverhampton) ??
