Hi,

We are away for a long weekend & I stumbled across a free rapid charger, so decided to fill my boots ?.

After about 45 mins, the car indicated that it had charged to 95% & was displaying a range of 152 miles. I was happy with that, so unplugged & set off to our hotel. As soon as I powered up with the charger removed, I noticed that the range had dropped to 137 miles. This confused me somewhat. Any ideas as to what might be happening? My thought was that the final stage of our journey until then had been in awful weather conditions, we had the wipers, lights, and aircon all going at one point ……

Cheers - Rob

When I complained to MG Toomeys about how quickly the battery charge was depleting (on short local journeys) they took the car for rebalancing but could not “find” anything wrong.
However the guy who brought the car back told me that anything electric (sat nav, air con, windscreen wipers, phone charging etc ) will take juice from the battery.
So perhaps all the electrics item you were using (due to weather conditions) may explain why the sudden drop in % ?

The guessed range will suddenly change if you change driving mode, or turn on the A/C or heater. The A/C is usually on, but while the car is charging, it is usually deemed to be off. So just by starting the car (and therefore switching the A/C on), it's common to see the range jump down several miles.

Unsure if this is the same as Lead Acid batteries, but whilst on charge the voltage is high. But you can really only tell the correct voltage once the battery settles down, about 30 to 60 minutes with Lead Acid. I think the voltage, and that is part of the range calculation, is high when on charge as the battery is nominally matching the charger voltage.

My ZS EV does the same. Once off charge the GOM certainly reduces the estimated range, by 10 to 15 miles....

Further to my recent gripe re mileage available on my MG5EV. I now have everything I can switch switched off but even with just local trips I find the 100% when fully charged very, very quickly goes down to 82% after probably around 25/30 miles.
Also we are finding the ride (suspension) really harsh. With the amount of traffic calming bumps around or the dreaded potholes you can’t avoid the suspension seems stiff and hard going over these things.
Not really a smooth ride.
My MG5 EV is on a three year lease but I don’t think I will buy or extend the lease at the lease end.

Re the harsh ride, have you checked the tyre pressures, they may be over inflated. The MG5 is certainly not known to have a harsh ride, some reviewers have said the opposite in fact.

If the tyre pressures are too high then they have been that way from new when Toomeys delivered the car to me back in January 2021. I haven’t topped them up or touched them in that 6 months.

I had exactly the same issue when rapid charging whilst on a road trip last week.

Welcome to the world of EV ownership!

My tyres were all over inflated when I picked up the car from new.
Noticed a day later when a nail wrote off one of the front tyres and I had to get a new one!

Tyres are usually overinflated for shipping or storage to prevent them flat spotting and it's not uncommon for tyre pressures to be overlooked on the PDI check at any manufacturer's dealers.
What does it say on the TPMS, the recommended pressure is 2.2 Bar ?
