Repair Time - Germany

Hi all,

Thought this one might be an interesting post for anyone in Germany.

Just after Christmas I was unfortunate to hit a deer that decided to jump from a small copse directly into the path of my Car (EHS Luxury).

I was travelling at about 70 KPH and had no chance to brake before the collison.

The damage initially looked to be just cosmetic but on further investigation a radiator was damaged and a strut that protects that front radiator.

The car was picked up by the garage for repair, not an MG dealer or specialist. The garage was dictated by my insurance company.

The garage, however, has been in touch with my MG dealer in order to get part numbers and to get the parts ordered.

The whole thing has taken 5 weeks so foar and still no estimated return date for my car as parts still haven't arrived.

I'll keep you all posted on any updates.

Blimey, I got lucky then - I hit a deer last week in my camper van (yes, it's an ICE!) in similar circumstances, it jumped right in to my path and made a really REALLY loud bang. I slowed, obviously, and saw that it staggered off into woodland. I continued my journey worried that when I got home I'd see the bumper all smashed and broken but it looks like I got a way with a few minor scuffs. Phew.

It's a surprisingly common accident if you live in deer country as I do.
Hit one myself some years back:

A lot of damage can be caused just by hitting a bird! In the 70s when driving my NSU, I spotted a pheasant slowly at the edge, starting to cross the road. They are pretty stupid birds and instead of turning around and heading back into the undergrowth, this one decided to try to take off right into my path! I had slowed down and already veerred off to the right as no other traffic was approaching but still managed to hit the poor bird with my left front light, demolishing both the bird and the headlamp!
It cost a lot to repair the light and bodywork damage whilst the bird was a write-off!

In Australia we have 'Roo bars, cos if you hit a Kangaroo in the outback and it wrecks your radiator , you could die from heat and thirst ! I guess in Europe you should call them Deer Bars !

In the UK we sacrifice the car to protect the thing you hit.
Not a bad idea if the thing you hit is a person.

I had the clicking steering wheel, the local MG specialist made it a lot better but needed a new part, it took 12 weeks or so to arrive from SAIC

Well after 3 months the car is back

Not all of the parts arrived so a repair to a radiator was made instead of replacing.

I have made my dissatisfaction known to MG.

I like the look that bull bars make to a SUV can we fit one to a ZS? I know that some have been banned on some cars built after 2005 due to stupid pedestrians walking out and throwing themselves at your car.?

If you are considering fitting Bull Bars, not considering their legality, perhaps you might think again after reading this extract from a report on their effect on pedestrians in the event of an accident.

• Bull bars concentrate the entire force of the accident over a smaller area.
• When the vehicle strikes a pedestrian, it typically occurs at the level of the pelvis.
• This strong force leads to more serious injuries, including pelvic fractures and damage to organs underneath.
• This could also lead to spinal cord injuries, hemorrhage of internal organs, internal bleeding, and death.

Even though more research is needed, results show that bull bars increase the chances of severe pedestrian injuries and death.

So please, think again!

Here in the UK the insurance companies are not allowed to dictate who repairs the vehicle. I think that's probably Europe-wide law.

So long as you're prepared to prove your choice isn't unreasonably expensive, you can go anywhere.

When someone crashed into my eZS, damaging the front radar, I insisted on using the local MG dealer who has a good reputation. Their mechanics had proper training and still found calibration tricky, I doubt the non-MG body shop would have done it right and quickly.
