MG4 SE LR
I bought a MG4 SE LR last year and although mechanically sound, have suffered a plethora of niggling software glitches, ranging from the radio turning itself on, The touchscreen display locking up, random bluetooth disconnects, refusing to dim the display at night.

Car was coming up to 15k so I decided to book it into a service and software update with the authorised local service centre in Cambridge, Buckingham & Stanley, who happily agreed to the work, however returning the car without the software update.

I called them and arranged to return the car again, to perform the update. After a couple of hours they called me and finally confessed that they don't have the equipment or training to do this kind of work.

So here I am trying to find another more competent dealer.

Next time, I'm buying a car which supports over the air updates!

I can recommend Brown and Gammons in Baldock. They updated my Trophy to R59 which I'm very happy with.

Whilst a distance from Cambridge, I can reccomend Perkins in Rayne, near Braintree. They are part of a small family owned group, and are an authorised MG service centre. They used to sell MGs, but stopped a little time ago. (As did a number of other garages).

I have an MG4 and have the same issues. More worryingly twice the radio has turned itself on whilst it was on the home charger and drained the 12v battery. I've booked it in for a software update twice, but they haven't done it. I haven't got a choice of authorised service centres and it took them 11 months to supply the missing 2nd key (I bought it new but it came with the wrong second key which was for another car). I didn't expect to have to do so much work to get a working car. I feel powerless. Hoping to learn something from this group but so far the answer to every question seems to be -spend the rest of your life badgering people, don't give up, and still get no results.

Whilst on the home charger and actually charging the 12V battery should be being topped up. (Plugged in not charging it doesn't).

Both times it has suddenly stopped charging at over 60% and the AA (MG roadside assistance) has resolved it by charging the 12v battery, having found it drained. A fast drive round the block has resolved it fully.
Do you think this is an issue with our home charger? We've just plugged it in at around 10-20% charge, turned charging on, gone back later to find the charge has gone up to 60% then stopped for no reason, with the car completely dead. Or is the car a dud? Or is it a softward update issue?
Any help would be very welcome.

Can I ask why you don't have a choice of service centres?

Has a neighbour got a home charger you could try to see if it's your charger or the car?

For me it felt like B+S are happy with doing infotainment updates (i.e. the one for bluetooth) but they didn't touch anything else, even though I complained about no preheat when plugged in not charging and twitchy adaptve cruise and said I wanted the update for 1mph adjustments. I have the impression I would need to go elswhere to fix the other stuff.

Hi Ian, Thanks for responding - having looked into service centres, we have one a few miles away and the next closest is about an hour away but logistically hard to get to. These are MG service centres, how do you find out about other authorised service centres? Google gives me Halfords and Kwikfit and we have loads of those.
I use my son's home charger without issue, but it's only happened twice on our home charger, otherwise it's been fine. I'm minded to wait and see, but both times it's been just as we were going out and if there is a software update I'd like to get it, though the MG service centre doesn't know or care if there is. Any help appreciated

If you have no issue with your son's charger it seems to suggest it's your charger that is the problem and not the car. You don't say which home charger you've got but try switching the charger off at the fuse box for a couple of minutes to reboot it. Also try contacting the charger's manufacturer to see if they have any solutions.

If you are still convinced it's the car you could contact MG customer services and complain that your dealer isn't interested in doing the required updates and see if they can help.

Halfords and Kwikfit etc. don't have access to MG's servers so they can't do any software updates so you are stuck with going to an MG dealer. You can find them here.

Thanks for your help, we've tried that and so far so good.
