Software Updates

So I had my second year service for my MG ZS and I got told there is no software update allocated to my VIN. Is that a thing? I am not able to charge on a tesla supercharger. When I asked about it the lady said oh you may have to call back in a month about it. What would people suggest I do here?

I would suggest you tell them you don't care what they do, but they need to fix it under warranty.
After so many posts and threads on Tesla chargers, I still cannot figure out what the problem is and which models are affected... Mk1 or Mk2 or mix of both? How come some need update and some not? As far as I know, mine had no updates whatsoever but Tesla works, 2022 Mk2 Trophy. So if mine works, how come newer ones don't? I would understand Mk1 not working but some of them do?

Obviously, MG thinks it's not a warranty issue. Anyone checked what exactly is covered under warranty and for how long?

It seems that the only solution is to find a friendly dealer for service and ask them whether Tesla update is free or not with service. If not, find another dealer.

Another point, once people try on one Tesla (that is 100% open to all) and it doesn't work, how many actually try 1 or 2 other open Tesla chargers, just to make sure it was not a one off glitch?

The post that Miles put on clears up which cars need hardware and which needs software, and which need both.

The bottom line is MG say the software update itself is free, but it's dealer prerogative on if they want to charge for the process of updating it (so much for those OTA updates, eh?)

So all the more reason to turn up to your dealer, not talking about updates, but say: it's broken on these chargers, so please fix it under warranty.

Mine is a mid 22 MG ZS LR Trophy. I have emails from MG and its exactly what you said, the update is free but have to pay for the technician's time. Problem is my car was in for service and they shrugged it off saying oh its not allocated to the VIN. I have read a few posts here saying a software update fixed it for people. I have used the open chargers so I know I am using the right one. I might try another one this week if I get a chance.

The problem with that approach is, the dealer will charge you £150 investigation fee to diagnose whether it is a fault or not. If MG then decide it is a warranty fix, they waive the charge. However, MG are saying this fix is an enhancement, not a fix and so the £150 charge will stand. A classic catch 22.

is there a link to that post please, I haven't seen any about what exactly models have issues .. please repost if you find it

The reply to which should be - why do.some of your cars (e.g. MG4) and pretty every other manufacturer work without modification then? Also, this is a CCS2 standard, it's not a brand new thing.

In the end, MG only have themselves to blame.

I wouldn't buy another.

According to press reports the first superchargers were open to non Tesla cars in the UK on 18 May 2022. So by the logic of MG cs any update on a vehicle supplied after that date is to fix a fault, not an enhancement.

Love my ZS long range, my first EV, now had 17 months. Invariably charge at home, only needed to use public charger a couple of times, and a few others on long trips at friends on granny. Potential charging problems discussed here however are typical arguments quoted by the vehement anti EV brigade.

I don't think it's anything to do with the 'anti EV' brigade.

Nobody is saying EV charging isn't viable. It's about broken functionality...

Glyn Hopkin Chelmsford say that unless a fault shows up they can't apply any software updates and that therefore my late 21 MG LR must have had all updates applied (but it hasn't!). This sounds suspicious to me but there's no way to challenge it. Their advice is to contact MG Customer Service, but that just feels like deflecting the issue away.

I'm sure no dealer ever updates stuff unless they have to, so what they told you sounds probably right - I don't think it's a simple case of 15 min download ... Just to update my ZS navigation software took hours ...
I have no idea whether mine was updated ever (guess not) but everything that's supposed to be working, works so I'm personally not rushing to have any updates unless I really have to ...

It is really hard to get the dealers to do any software updates. It took me a long back and forth to get them to agree to do the software update and when they did agree, they did put a condition that if they don't find anything then they will charge me for the engineers time. Luckily in my case they managed to do the update. I was honestly expecting to see a bill at the end of the day when I went to pick up the car. I would recommend going to them and asking for a MG specialised technician to look at it. If you know for a fact that the Tesla chargers don't work then they have to be able to get the update done. The Gatwick chargers are less than 2 mins away from my dealer so I was able to check it right then as soon as I picked up the car.

It was an MG service centre that said no updates required. The worry is that they 'won't find anything' when I know my car has suffered from reduced charging speed since the last update. (I have evidence but won't bore you with it here!) Thanks for the encouragement to persist.

It is things like this that make the average car dealer sound like numpties.

Some barely understand their own product.

I have just picked my car up from my local dealer after a full software update.
I couldn't connect to the ismart function because it was not installed.
I was initially told I would have to pay a minimum of an hour's labor to do the work.
Fair enough I thought it's not the dealerships problem but when I went to pick up my car I was told there was no charge, so I am very happy with that.

Regards
Rob

My 2020 Gen 1 ZS EV never got a software update in three years
For a decade I bought Chinese sub brand smartphones, mostly the rugged type, none of them ever got a software update.

Now I have a used Samsung S21 ultra. It has received android updates every few months for the last couple of years.

But it probably cost the original owner a grand, which is four or five times what I paid for my China phones.

I've said this before. You have to understand that this is a sub brand car. And a very Chinese one at that. They will do as little as possible to keep these things up to date because it's not in their (shorted sighted) interest.

Make a cool looking product, sell it, gloss over the slight issues, make a cooler product, sell it, gloss over... rinse and repeat.

They're selling the dream, not the solution. It's capitalist perfection... from the communists. You gotta love it.
