MG4 Trophy LR
Hey Folks,

I have been a keen un-logged in lurker of the MG EV forums for quite some time. I managed to pull the pin on a 2022 Trophy LR edition in Volcanic Orange for just shy of £17k with 20k miles on the clock via the MG Stock scheme to dealerships. Of course I am now filled with questions, concerns and trying to familiarise myself with the vehicle before delivery (Thanks Jerry on Youtube for the guide videos!)

Background:
I am coming from a old 2014 Hyundai i30 diesel which I have owned for 9 years, however with the way of my journeys now being typically 15 mile trips, a diesel isn't the best of options and its starting to show its age with the lack of comforts, technology and well some parts failing which I have had to replace. The EV Felt like the best choice in terms of fuel savings, maintenance and the extent of the warranty for the MG4.

The EV breakdown:

I am currently waiting on an EV charger to be installed too, however I am a shared owner and jumping through the UK Scheme but typically waiting for my landlord to bloody grant the permission to get on with it. Will I be ok using just the granny charger to begin with, running from an extension out the kitchen window?

In terms of EV Electric tariffs etc, I have had a deep dive and it seems whatever way you look someone has a different opinion on if you should switch to an EV Tariff or not. My guess is I will do no more than 150 miles a week, of which the Trophy supposedly does 230-280 so realistically at max I will be charging once a week, with this being said I could probably have survived on a granny charger only but with the government grant for renters covering a large cost of the install I felt It was a good option to get it down this year. So with this being said is it worth I just stick on my Octopus Tracker (December 2023) rates or lock into a EV Tariff for that one weekend of charge? Until I get the install of the charger I assume I will either try a EV forecourt for some public charging experience as well as run a cable from the house and try plug in.

Is it worth picking up the service plans for the MG4, I would assume so as the servicing is required to keep it in warranty?

Bringing this thread round to some point. I am happy to hopefully be joining the happy owners of the MG4 club as well as I already was jumping around the helpful threads here with accessories (mud guards, mats etc!) and hopefully will stick around to read further updates and be apart of the community. Hopefully some of you more knowledgeable than me can lead me to answer some of the queries in bold above!

Thanks,
AP!

Thanks,

1. Yes, you can charge with a granny while you wait. Make sure you are confident in your home wiring however, if you have any doubts get it checked by an electrician. Ideally you would connect the granny to a dedicated socket with its own circuit. If you use an extension cable make sure it is rated for a high continuous current (13A or greater) and fully uncoil it before use. Regularly monitor temperatures in the cable, plugs and socket.

2. 150 miles a week would translate to about 37kWh/week. At 7p/kWh this would cost £2.59, at 30p/kWh it would cost £11.10. Whether this is worth it depends on whether your day usage would cost more at a higher day rate and whether you can time shift. There are various spreadsheets on these forums to help you calculate it, if you search.

3. Servicing is required to maintain the warranty and you get a year's free breakdown cover for renewing. Whether a service plan is worth it depends on how long you expect to keep the car and how you like to budget for services. Minor services seem to be £90-120, semi-major £180-240, major £300+. Prices vary for packages and be aware that dealer plans can be cheaper but may only be able to be used at that dealership.
