Evening all, I have been considering taking advantage of the used car market and selling on our Lexus CT and getting an MG 5.
I feel that I have covered most basis with what I have researched online and electric will be suitable for 90% of our month to month lives. The only hurdle my wife has thrown in is when we can freely travel again and she can visit family in Holland can she do with confidence. I have done some additional searching and seems that Holland is beyond well equipped with charging options. To be on the safe side has anyone done this type of trip for some extra reassurance? The last thing I would want is a panicked phone call if I’m in the UK and she’s in Holland and it’s all gone wrong.

I don't know about Holland, but there are several posts on the ZS forum I think with long journeys in the UK and in other countries, so it seems doable. I'd say planning is the key. No doubt someone with experience will be along shortly... Good luck with presenting your case to SWMBO!

Take a look at this blog. electricfelix

He's does many runs through Europe in similar range cars to the MG5.

From what I've read, France is a bit hit and miss. Belgium is better and Holland is not a problem.

There are also any number of videos on Youtube of families taking long EU trips in EVs. In general it seems Europe is better served than the UK for chargepoints.

I don't know if Zap map does all of Europe but you could use that as a starting basis to plan a route? Obviously this doesn't cover faulty charge stations so always have a plan B!

For Europe you can use chargemap, openchargemap and plugshare apps to check the status of chargers.

Thanks all, after a bit of additional research it would appear that Holland as been deemed the second best country in terms of EV in Europe so all should be ok ?

We usually drive to France once or twice a year and I am still unsure as to how reliable the French charging infrastructure is. I've seen equivalent journeys using Teslas but they have their own charging network.Next time we go I'll have to make a choice between the MG and my wifes diesel. At least she gets a decent mileage on the motorway miles.

I think Ionity is the only reliable option right now. Total seem to be building them but they have major reliability problems. Many of the other chargers are single units with varying reliability.

Chargemap is the app to use in France to check charger availability.

The good news is that the French government are putting money into building out the network but they aim to have that completed by December next year.
