The price of a home home charger?

I wired in a dedicated circuit & cable when I built my house, 32Amp commando socket outside. Am just going to buy the Ohme cable from Octopus for £199 once I can get the electricity provider changed to them.
This is the cheapest way to do it.

Ah, hindsight ...... Could have saved myself well over a £ grand if I’d a) known about & b) done the same. Hey ho .....

An update on my progress towards getting a home charger.

Quotes after the grant :

EO Mini Pro V2, ( tethered ) - £725.

Zappi which is manufactured locally, ( tethered ) - £750 plus VAT

Apparently the installation for either would be ,"straight forward".

With the EVs predicted mileage (based past annual usage) and the availability of local free public charge points I am struggling to justify the cost of a home charger that would really only be a convenient back up to the Granny charger or free public ones.

Does anyone know where a reasonably priced, reliable home charger can be purchased and installed before I give up.

I opted for Commando socket and Ohme cable.
Before that the best price was quoted was from BP Pulse at £500.
It may be work getting a quote from Ohme/Octopus.

I got the untethered version and bought the type 2 cable separately, thinking I could use the type 2 cable at public chargers aswell, which I can, but I find myself doing 95% of my charging at home, and for that I wish I would have paid the little extra, as it would be so much easier, not having to get the cable out the boot each time, and sometimes putting a wet cable back in the car if it's been raining, just something to bear in mind.

Good point. Also remember that currently PodPoint has no timed charging functionality and a quite limited app. I had a tethered PodPoint installed quite a while ago and I can’t set a timed charge to take advantage of cheap night rates with my electricity provider.

I've had another rethink over a home charger  The savings I had in place to pay over & above the OLEV grant for a 7Kw wall box have been spoken for

The recent storm Christoph left us with leaky roof repairs which have taken priority over the wall box charger so I will be doing most of the leg work myself, I needed 25 metres of armoured 6mm2 cable between house & garage which I recently picked up off facebook market place for the princely sum of £25 :D Absolute bargain, I couldn't believe it.

I will be digging the trench across my garden & securing everything in place myself for an electrician friend I know to connect up. I dread to think what they would charge for all that work, I wont be doing it in a day so I'll take my time doing it over three, four days or even a week. (y)

The DNO are due tomorrow 23rd to upgrade our ancient shared loop electricity supply, Fingers crossed as it's been cancelled by them once before

I don't really need a 7Kw charger as our life style now we're retired doesn't call for a lot of mileage or commute these days, My ZS EV doesn't need to be charged at a certain level at a certain time so I'm looking to go with a 16A portable charger with a commando socket or If finances allow it may change to an 32A adjustable portable charger :cautious:

Yes I've been keeping my eye open on various auction sites, Am I right in thinking the OHME charger is a Zencar charger with timed charging options!!! I've been looking at these Zencar chargers on Alibaba but with the Chinese New Year in full swing every place seems to be closed for the festivities, I've had quite a bit of stuff off the Alibaba/Aliexpress sites over the years with no trouble at all, As anyone else noticed the option to buy the goods their EU warehouses has been discontinued since Brexit, Most participating shops on the Alibaba site are quoting around £35-39 P+P with mailing from China only now

Edit: I forgot the link to the one I'm looking to get Accept Product Customized Iec 61851 Connector Of Adjustable 16a/32a Evse - Buy Iec 61851 Connector,Iec 61851 Connector Of Adjustable 16a/32a Evse,Adjustable 16a/32a Evse Product on Alibaba.com

A few things I’ll just say/let you know.
(I’ve put in a 32a commando socket)

Unless you’re going to get the £199 Octopus energy ohm cable offer (with commando plug), then you’re going to be looking at about £500 for a charger, in which case you may as well pay for one to be installed as you could probably get one installed with grant for not much more. Dig the trench etc yourself and you’ve got your cable so they shouldn’t charge you any extra over a standard install.

If you go commando socket route. Def fit a blue 32amp one, it’d be pointless & same price really fitting a yellow 16amp version.

If you go for the commando socket. Do not officially tell the electrician that you want it to charge your car, otherwise they technically cannot legally fit it without doing the earthing work too. You must say it’s for general use where I may need a 32amp supply, then it’s all totally legal.

If you havent already got an outside socket then I would fit a standard socket and commando socket on the wall, to give you all choices.

There’s not really much point I’d say in getting a 16amp charger. It’ll only be a bit quicker than your free granny lead that you have. I didn’t think there was much difference in price between 16 & 32amp, yet the difference in charging speeds would be huge.

They’re now adding in the vat at point of sale, I bought something few days ago. Unless it’s over £150? Or something in which case it’ll get caught at customs to be paid now.

If there's enough dosh in the kitty I think I may just plump for the 32A one, I may get everything in place & wait until I've saved enough for one. (y)

I meant to add too, make sure that your electrician is happy with the 6mm cable length that you've got/need to fit.
6mm normal T&E is perfectly ok normally for a 40amp circuit breaker, however at long lengths deductions have to be calculated etc, plus armoured cable maybe rated different to normal T&E. You want to make sure they're happy to sign it off before you fit it.
I've read about some ridiculous installers that fit 10mm "to be on the safe side" etc, which I think is purely because they probably don't really understand themselves how to do the calculations.
