Thinking of buying mg3 hybrid very soon (great offers right now) but now have reservations after seeing the thread about ev not cutting in now it’s starting to get colder in the UK, can anyone confirm what the mpg is like if it’s not using ev during the winter as our weather is cold for about 9 months of the year!
My driving is mainly 5 mile commute and the odd shopping trip so nothing over 40mph really, so will it be enough to charge the battery to give me good mpg?
Tia. Nick.

I've owned self charging hybrids (not an mg3 admittedly) but no.

If (big if) you are able to plug a car in, a lightly used full EV would surely be a better choice?

Your mileage is so low perhaps a bicycle might be better? (Jesting obviously)

Deals to be had.....

I’ve not got the facility to charge an ev unfortunately and we do go away on trips a couple of times a year.
I do roughly 6k a year in my car.
Been diesel driver since the 90’s but hybrids are getting as good as that now.

Hello, I own the 2 vehicles MG4 (about 7500 miles / year) and Mg3 (should not do more than 3800 miles).

I agree with "briktop". if you don't have the option of recharging at home, even with a simple plug it would be a shame, then the mg3 would be the best solution.

You will use more petrol, given the mileage and winter temperatures, to recharge the battery and drive electrically. And in the event of prolonged immobilisation, you will need to disconnect the negative terminal of the 12 V battery.

I’ve just ordered my MG3 so cannot personally say what winter MPG will be. I would guess also it will be difficult for others as the hybrid MG3 was only launched this last February, so no one has driven it through a winter yet.
My current hybrid (not an MG) I lose between 5-10mpg in the winter months going from high 50’s in summer to high 40’s/low 50’s in winter.

I've been getting 30mpg on morning trips at around 5:30 of around 3 miles engine always on. Return trip when temp rises get around 60mpg. My work trips differ but short ones at moment. See what happens when the colder weather hits. Hopefully will even themselves out.

Hi Nick,
As you know, any car will be less efficient in winter, regardless of whether it is petrol, diesel, EV , PHEV or HEV. Once the HEV is up to operating temperature, which should not take long, the MG3 should switch over to EV mode. Comparison tests by reviewers against the likes of the Suzuki Swift have indicated the Swift as being more efficient in the manual version and marginally so in the CVT version. Remember that the Swift is considerably lighter but it has less interior room. Being a Suzuki, there should be no question about reliability. It has however scored low on NCAP testing. The qualifier here is that the MG3 Hybrid has yet to be tested.
Other questions that you ask yourself are:
  1. Do you want a car with an automatic transmission, or would you be happy with a manual? If your commute is in stop/start traffic, the automatic option might be more relaxing. I wanted an automatic for that very reason.
  2. Based on the low mileage you mention, were there any issues running a diesel, as that can be a magnet for DPF issues for some?
The Dacia Sandero is reasonably economical in manual form, I'm not sure about the automatic version.
The Yaris Hybrid is quoted as being more economical, but there is a considerable price difference, so it would all come down to your price to change and what your budget is.
I would suggest making a shortlist and test-driving all of them. See can you get an extended test drive, my MG dealer let me take it out unaccompanied with the instructions to "take it for a long drive, no need to hurry back". I even went back for a second test a week or two later, once I had done my sums.
I had been driving diesel for 15 years and find the fuel economy at the moment to be not far off what I was getting in those. The reason that I didn't go for diesel this time around, is that my mileage has decreased considerably over the last few years, and thinking ahead of when I plan to change it, what will the resale be on a diesel in 5 years?

Also consider keeping the car you have, if it's any good that is, you don't mention it so I can't comment, I'm 74 so this is most likely my last car.

The positive and negative comments are genuine to the owners, and reviewers less so as they don't normally have them very long and have to make a living out of doing reviews.

Morning Kev. Just read your comment about age. I said the same thing when we bought a Peugeot 208SW when I retired18 years ago. I definitely don't think this will be your last car. You're 74 now, upgrade on PCP in 3 years and again when you're 80 and you will still be looking at new models! Since I was your age, (I'm now at the wrong end of 83), I've had a Yaris, Hyundai i20, a Hyundai Bayon and now the MG3 Hybrid. Kept them all 3 years and traded/sold for a new car on PCP. Apart from finding a few bob as deposit I'm paying less per month now than I was 7 years ago! Can't beat the smell of a new car. Age is a number and as long as those birthdays keep coming, why worry. Happy motoring.

You may be right but my health is not good at all and getting worse all the time.

I like the new cars but not the imposed control, I may go used next time to something pre 2024.
