This MG4 is an uncomfortable place to be

I think part of it is the EV comfort. I kept my 2009 Golf GTi (admittedly 135,000 miles, but I'd have called it a smooth runner) in my garage for a week or two after I got the MG4, waiting for the salvage guy to collect it. (The insurance had decided to write it off due to cosmetic bodywork damage in an accident.)

Then collection day came and I moved the MG4 out of the way to get the Golf into the driveway for the pickup. I was really startled when I started the Golf for the last time to drive it out of the garage. It felt clunky and noisy and even a bit unpleasant. This is the car I'd been pretty thrilled with for almost 14 years. I think riding a piston engine is a strain we don't really notice until it's not there any more.

But the other thing is definitely the HVAC. Instead of blasting me with hot or cold air, the MG4 simply gets the cabin to the right temperature without any fuss and holds it there. This has impressed me since day 1. I honestly think there's something majorly wrong with the OP's car.

My first impressions of the heating / cooling system are better than I was expecting. I was a bit worried whether the heater would be as good as I wanted, being electric, but boy is it hot, at least on moderate fan setting, just what my hands need in the cold! Heated steering wheel and seats are also great.
I prefer setting the fan speed to manual just to minimise the max noise that t generates when first coming on, that would probably help your underdamped heating/cooling response as well.

No I don’t have eco selected. I use auto climate control so I’m not messing around with fan speeds etc. just expect the car to keep a set temp without issue!

Gonna ring them next week and explain the issue and hopefully get them to do an update on the hvac module and see if there’s any other outstanding updates
Do you have an update on this?
I'm experiencing the same issue on a 2021 HS PHEV. Already have booked with my dealer. He seemed pretty puzzled on the phone as he had never had any issue "with this model", which lets me think this is a known issue on others.

My car is a second hand, did not buy from a MG dealer so I assume the software hasn't been updated for a long time, which gives a little bit of hope...

Its not an issue we've come accross in nearly 20,000 miles (no software updates todate).

The HVAC system is, like a lot of other software systems on this car…awful. While software is based on the binary, 1 for on, 0 for off, it’s is possible to have some nuance in your software. I’ve had this in every other car I’ve owned. But not the MG4!

Set the temp to 27°c (that’s another stupid issue!) and it’s blowing warm air, fine, it’s comfortable at the moment. Let’s keep the car at this comfortable temperature. Nope. In 10 mins rather than blowing SLIGHTLY cooler air to keep the car at the set temp, it’s blows COLD air at a higher fan speed to cool the car down, then will blow considerably HOTTER air to warm it back up to the set temp.

It is quite frankly the least capable software I have ever come across in any car. Add in LKA, auto headlights, terrible adaptive cruise control that again is the least nuanced I’ve ever come across, it simply can’t gradually slow or speed up to match the car in fronts speed, it’s either go or brake.

I’ve only done 1800km in this car and I already hate it. Come January I’m ordering a new model 3…at least they seems to have some intelligence in the software design.
Hi I am in Australia and definitely not had your problems, I use the air for cooling I set
temperature to 18 and all is well. As for the car itself all has been perfect.

I was hoping the original poster could give an update with potential answers from his dealer :)

It's been mentioned before but if you find the hvac system fan speed to be to slow or to frisky for your taste in auto, the system has a 3 position auto fan adjusment. Slow, Normal and High, if I recolect right you find it under settings in the hvac meny (think it was a cogwheel in the pre R40/46 hvac menu). You can also manualy adjust the fan speed when in auto, quite genius infact (what happens is that only the fan speed is switched to manual, other settings is stil in auto).

I appreciate this is an old thread but I also have significant problems with the hvac in my MG4 SE LR.

I tend to have it set on 23°C, Eco, air from outside and demist/windscreen air direction, fan at 1 or 2, A/C initially off.

This results in a warm car after 10 minutes, then 20 mins later the windows start steaming up.

The only way to clear the mist is to put ac on. The car then cools rapidly and I have to turn it off after 10 mins, following by misting up again shortly afterwards, and the cycle continues.

Any suggestions?

Anyone else seeing this?

Just keep A/C on all the time - put the seat and steering wheel heating on to keep you warm until the car interior warms up, or use the Remote function on the app. I VERY occasionally need to switch on the front and rear screen demisting, which very quickly clears a fogged-up window.

SE doesn't have seat or steering wheel heating. ;)

I've always just left my HVAC on Auto (albeit with airflow set to external), set a target temperature and let it get on with it. It's always seemed to work fine for me. The most efficient config? probably not - but that's what I would have done with any ICE car, so I don't treat the EV any differently.

With the latest HVAC update (and Info software 1100R38) the target temperature now makes sense ... before I would set 25°C, now I set 22°C. :)

I presume auto puts the A/C on?

Presumably. But then again I have always kept A/C on - in any car I've had which has included A/C. (Which is most for the past 15 years or more). As I said earlier - I treat my EV car no differently to how I treated my previous ICE cars in terms of general driving and usage. Even if I'm not getting the best efficiency, it's still way cheaper to run :)

For me, it’s auto all the time, with external air, fan set at 2 and temp at 20 or 21. Works for both me and my wife. I sense, without proof, that doing it this way gives a truer temperature than “full” auto.

I've started seeing a couple of times in the cold weather the temperature staying even, then getting colder, but the temperature setting has not changed.

Oh, poor things...
:D I really feel for them, it was 43°C here today, it will be hotter tomorrow, no idea how anyone could drive a vehicle without a steering wheel heater

I totally use mine in winter though, but I absolutely prefer the option to turn on the A/C remotely on a hot summers day.
