To go Extended range - To XR or not XR.

Do you buy the car for the 5-10% of the time you need it for a longer journey, or the 90-95% of the time you dont and only travel locally. We made that mistake with our ZS TLR!

The only thing you should never do is test drive the XPower as this will do the same thing as feeding a Gremlin after midnight, cause chaos in your purchasing process ?
The XPower was announced as we were sitting in the dealer's showroom, putting a deposit on a new 4LR... it was only another few £K - I started to say to the sales guy, 'Er, about the XPower...', and my other half kicked me under the table and gave me THE LOOK

But, tbh, the acceleration of the 4 is quite adequate.

Ah the look you give her AFTER she's bought the new shoes ?

As Anon says, don't even test drive the XPower, you will have to buy it! The performance is only useful when someone tries to cut you up or for that otherwise risky overtake. The LR is probably the best compromise, but the SR is the best value for money, and still outperforms most cars on the road.

All of the MG4 range have charging rates over 100kw so a quick coffee is enough for a total refill at the motorway services.

... except the SE SR which actually charges at a best of about 90kW - the 117kW in the original specification was an aspiration that was never achieved. As it happens though, the real-world charge rate curve means that the overall 10-80% charge time is still as per the original specification. :)

I stand corrected.

To be honest, I have only used a motorway charger once, whilst we were waiting for the Zappi to be installed. Very fast, but not impressed with the 87p per Kw.

Ewan McTurk (The Plug Life) is well worth listening to if unsure about which type of battery to choose. In general he is very re-assuring but does warn against constant topping up to 100% after short journeys; much better to let the battery get to a lower state of charge before topping up if your journeys are short and predictable,

Agreed. I've been out and about today and got home with the battery at 20% ... so it's now on charge until it's 100% and balanced. :)
