Warranty still valid? - Bought 2022 ZS EV with no proof of first service

the salesman claimed he was going to call the previous owner about this
Fingers crossed it may work out OK, if it has been serviced and you get hold of the service invoice.

But in my mind something still doesn't add up. When the dealer purchased the vehicle they surely would have checked service history and adjusted their buy-price accordingly? For example, as mentioned as the first paragraph of this thread...

Then the dealer who supplied the car to you, could have come up short twice then and is now paying the price.
When they bought in the car, they should have confirmed that the car had its full service history in place at the time.
This may suggest that by not carrying out their checks prior, means they gave you incorrect assurances of its history and are struggling to make good.
A quick call to the previous owner is all that is required really ?.
Did it have its first service are where - simple.
If the previous owner is vague, then it’s pretty safe to assume it was missed !.
If the car is now in your name, then this means the car has now received another owner on the V5.
Assume nothing - check everything !.

I agree, and I can see one of two scenarios.

Either they were sloppy and didn't check carefully enough when they bought the vehicle, and now they're genuinely being caught out in their own sloppiness. Or they're fully aware of it and were trying to deliberately fool a buyer with this whole "oh but MG told us to honour the warranty regardless of service history"...

So the dealership you are buying from serviced the vehicle in December? Does the worksheet have the name of the dealership on it? If so then that is your proof that it was serviced on time.
But that doesn't cover the missed service.

Return the car and go to another dealer there are more reliable dealers out there who will give you sight of the service history

After I put pressure on them again, one of the salesmen came back to me saying that they do believe the car has full service history and are now trying to still source proof of the first service and will come back to me by end of today...

The plot thickens...

The seller could just give you 4 year warranty of his own.

Here, Wolkswagen only has 2 year warranty, but the importer just made it so, that THEY will cover the car from when the manufacturer warranty expires and until it is 5 years old. This is only EV's bought after a specific date and only if people come to a brand garage to have the yearly inspections done.

It is getting more and more problematic, trying to sell european cars with only 2 year warranty in a market where Chinese and Korean manufacturers gives 5-7 year and Tesla gives you 4 years.

The french and german automanufacturers still only have 2 years, people are starting to think "I wonder if those cars are badly made, if they only dare give me 2 years of warranty". Especially if they can buy a Chinese car, cheaper and with a better warranty.

You could always ask them to pay for a 4 year warranty if they want the sale, :)

Alternative is to see how much it would cost to arrange it himself and ask for money back assuming he is happy with the car.

Remember that not everything is covered by 7 year warranty - check on MG website or on this forum what is covered and for how long. I bought second hand and I'm not sure whether I'm covered but the deal was too good to miss so I went for it ... almost a year later, (touch wood) no problems ...
If you are doubtful that you'll get better deal on another car, consider your options ...
Get MG customer services to confirm if the car is covered or not and then you might even decide to keep the car and get cost of warranty cover refunded by the dealer ...

The latest on this is that the salesman came back to me at the end of the day claiming that they called the previous owner who will look for proof of service tonight and they'll come back to me tomorrow.

My plan is to essentially give them a deadline tomorrow morning. Either they can produce proof of the service until the end of the day, or I'll be at the dealership with the vehicle first thing on Monday morning to return the vehicle.

To be completely honest, it's kind of hard for me to put a price on the warranty, but if they put a significant chunk of money on the table for me to keep the car I could potentially take it... The price I bought it for would have been fair with full service history. It's overpriced without because the market is packed with similar vehicles (same reg, same-ish mileage) for just about the same price, so naturally I wouldn't want to stick with what's effectively a bad deal (paying the same as a car with FSH, and having no FSH).

I'm hoping that if they can't produce the service proof, that they at least come to their senses and realise that it's unlikely they'd be able to sell that car again for that same price without FSH (and now with an additional previous owner).. and if they're going to sell it for less anyway, why not refund me some of the price to make it a fair deal for everyone... Sure maybe they'll lose some (or all) of their profit on the car, but that's their fault for not having asked all the documents from the seller when they acquired the vehicle.

How much was it and with what mileage? Standard range? Trophy?

Mine was take it or leave it from non-MG "supermarket" , £15K with 42,000 trophy SR, most likely ex-lease

Check online tonight how much is extended warranty cover for it , print out and ask for that much

I paid £18205 with 13k miles for a Trophy LR...

I can't seem to find anywhere that'd give me anything close to 7 years of warranty though :( or rather, the 5-ish years it still has left.

I just looked it up for my ZS on warrantywise website, £84 p.m.

That's very low mileage and long range so I think i would happily pay about £17K for it without service records...
Go to warrantywise website and see how much they quote. My quote came to about £1,000 p.a. (no way I would pay that) so you could print yours out or email it to your dealer and say "look, this is what it would cost me, what's your suggestion" . Money off, full refund, undertaking to repair your car under warranty themselves...

They might think £1,000 off would be bit much so might help to show them alternative equivalent ZS with warranty for about the same price ...

p.s. Remember that not everything is covered for 7 years... Only the battery and few other bits ...

Unsurprisingly, the day came and gone and the salesman did not update me on the previous owner's efforts in finding the missing service history... At this stage I'm starting to suspect malice more than incompetence. So far no acknowledgement whatsoever of what I stated to them regarding turning up on Tuesday morning to return the vehicle (Tuesday is the earliest I can do)...

My plan now is to escalate further to the branch manager to try and get things moving in the right direction. Either through acknowledging that they'll take the vehicle back on Tuesday, or by offering some form of compensation to account for the loss in resale value and impact to warranty status...

All the while and to make matters worse I still haven't been able to bind my car with iSMART because in all their incompetence, they didn't get the previous owner to unbind the car, and whilst I've tried forcing the unbinding, 72h later the car is still bound. This leads me to believe the previous owner might also be acting in bad faith and be actively cancelling the unbinding... But hopefully I can sort this out with MG customer services. I believe I've read something from someone else in this forum who had success in getting customer services to do the unbinding remotely...

No point binding the car if you might return it. If you decide to keep it, MG customer services will sort it out for you.

By the way, is that MG dealership/garage where you bought the car?

Yeah it's an MG mains dealer. They're listed on the MG website itself.
You need to talk to the manager and if not resolved within a week, escalate to head office of that dealership and copy MG customer service into it. Give them the opportunity to come up with some reasonable solution but what you want is either warranty cover or discount on price paid on account of no warranty (assuming that suits you).
Good luck and keep us updated.
