Alright folks, in the end decided not to go with an MG ZS EV after all even though there was a really good deal on a new, in-stock one close by.
There were a few things about the car that annoyed me and for some I can't be sure whether it was just because that unit itself had problems or if it's a widespread thing, so decided not to risk it.
A few things that annoyed me about the car:
- The hill hold assist was a bit scary. Basically when coming up to a stop e.g., at a roundabout, on the slightest of inclines, the hill hold/park brake automatically engages as normal, but when trying to start moving again, there was a bit of delay between it automatically releasing the break and applying power which meant that the car would roll back slightly... Not much, but enough to make me notice it and annoy me...
- There was some sort of squeak coming from somewhere on the A pillar when going over slightly rougher pavement... Could never figure out where it was coming from. Reading through the forum I suspect it may have been coming from the speaker due to it being too loose inside the casing.
- The fact that they didn't get the previous owner to unbind the car and the fact that despite my attempts to force the unbinding, either the system has some bug preventing the unbinding, or the previous owner was actively cancelling the unbinding... (this is a minor one since I expect MG would be able to resolve this, but just added frustration).
- The driver's side door handle would sometimes stick on open and would require a gentle nudge to go back to its normal position. This seems to be a somewhat common problem as well..
- The infotainment system completely glitched on me on the way to return the car. I was using CarPlay and the picture froze completely, wouldn't react to touches, and even unplugging the cable did nothing. Eventually after a few minutes it reset itself, but this seemed really odd... Never had this happen with my wife's Nissan Leaf.
On top of all that, something I hadn't even mentioned before, and it's to do with the dealership, not with the car. This dealership charges £20 to charge up the car so it's fully charged on delivery day. You don't really get a choice, so I had to pay for it. When I got there at the time we'd agreed, the salesman was like "oh I'm so sorry, the car is only at 60%... I've only just plugged it in, but lets go through the documents and it'll charge up a bit more in the meanwhile". In the end it was just around 60% which felt like theft that they'd charge me for something, effectively not provide it, and not even try to make up for it. But that's just yet another occurrence in the string of shadiness I faced here...
