i have bought mg4 knowing totally new and expect niggles, it is how MG and dealers deal with them, 1st test tomorrow, brake light out, not a simple bulb change looks like led, dont know whether it is a full sealed unit and if so parts availability,

Page 277 onwards deals with bulbs (If that is the issue). Worth a look at the manual before you pop in to your dealer. Good Luck.

Are both sides out or just one light cluster?

Definitely one of the things that can happen with a car hopefully a positive experience with the dealer

This is a very interesting one.
Relatively simple fix but if parts aren't available off the shelf you can't knowingly drive for months with a defective brake light!

Is it the same if one of the LED lines is still working though? As essentially you have 2 on one side and 1 on the other.

If push comes to shove, the dealer might probably swap one from another car.

That is a good mitigation but I wonder whether it would pass an MOT test?

From my earlier driving days of adding spot and for lights etc. The DVLA and NOT tested confirmed that lights either side of the centre line of the car HAVE to be equal. You can have any number of add on lights as long as they match the other side of the centre line.
as an aside I tried getting the DVLA to allow me to install cctv paired cameras with internal screens instead of wing mirrors, but they refused my idea. Please bear in mind this was in 1973 on a Volvo 145 estate car. The Mini EV and many top of the line cars have these as standard items now. I'm tempted to see if MG4 and Dealer could add these as I only have half an inch clearance when reversing into my garage and whilst it's easy enough to tap the button to retract the wing mirrors at the narrowest point so I probably won't bother to ask.

I remember seeing on Tomorrow's World many years ago a car with prisms instead of mirrors - aerodynamics and damage-avoidance being the key advantages. The main hurdle they identified was DVLA rules.
