What have you got, that's lasted you for years and years. ??

I've still got the mug that I first took to work as an apprentice 43 years ago ... and it was probably 10+ years old then. :)

I also still have some of my Dad's old tools, drill bits and tapping sets - they must be 50 years old now.

As per title, what things have you got, appliances, tools, etc,etc that's lasted for years and years.
I've had a new Washing machine, delivered
and fitted today. Had the last one well over 30 years. ???

My pinis has been my favourite tool and is approximately 57 years old.

Still in great working order despite the enormous use and battering it has taken over the years.

Alright Mods, Calm Down.

It's traditional in my family to have this artifact passed down from birth.

A Black and Decker hammer drill, " purchased " with my mums green shield stamp collection in 1974. Still going strong after four house restorations and abuse by a plasterer friend who borrowed it for his own restoration. Still got the original chuck key! Carbon brushes (original) get a tad smelly when drilling 12.5 mm holes in steel .
Also , still using my dads toe nail clippers, age unknown , but older than me. ??

Cutlery, I've got knives and forks etc handed down from the early 20th century (when Sheffield steel was really the best) and they beat any modern stuff hands down.

I've had an exercise bike for god knows how long, it still looks brand new:rolleyes:

I've also got a samsung 40" tv that is about 17 years old, it refuses to die so is now relaxing in the garage.

I was left a garden bench when I bought my first home in 1994. Recently I had it shot blasted and reassembled it with new bolts. Repaint and it looks as good as new  some 30 years later.

Still use the same brush to clean my shoes I had during basic training in 1986 (38 years!)

When I was 14, back in 1959, I bought a second hand bike with my life savings. It's still going strong, wouldn't swap it for anything else.

This is similar to how it looked in Boans, when I bought it.

Main difference is the handlebar shape, even had the white wall tires

This what it looks like now, after I've tried to make it lighter, by removing a lot of stuff designed for wet Netherlands weather.

There's a bit of surface rust on the frame, from living next to the sea for 20 years, and about a mm of play in the crank. The sealed bearings are amazing, the wheels still spin endlessly with a small flick of the wrist.

Best money I ever spent!
Aussie bikes were extremely basic at the time.

"What have you got, that's lasted you for years and years"

I've got the same withering contempt for corrupt hypocritical politicians, devious lying advertisers, oily tabloid jounalists, self-righteous religious bigots and other associated grifters that I first acquired as a teenager. Still working perfectly and unlikely ever to need replacement....

We have a Phillips chest freezer in our garage, we have lived at this address for 45 years and we had for about 5 years before we moved !.
It regularly doubles up as a DIY work bench and a planting table and therefore the lid is looking a bit of a mess really.
Of course, now I have given it a mention, it is surely going to fail tomorrow ?.
In that approx 50 years, we have probably replaced the kitchen fridge or freezer at leat half a dozen times.
They don’t make stuff to last anymore !.

We'd been getting through washing machines about once every 5 years for some unknown reason up until we moved into the present house 10 years ago. Within about 18 months it started making some unearthly noises and I thought oh no, here we go again. I offered to take it out and see if it was anything I can fix, to wit my better half replied no ( ??). Anyway, she obviously knows better as it's still making unearthly noises during the cycle and still washing effectively.
Note : we were work colleagues and started dating after I went round and fixed her betamax recorder. No idea how. Took it apart, put it back together and it started working. She obviously saw the value in this and we've been together 35 years ??.
Fixed a combi boiler once that broke down on xmas eve. Same principal ( but potentially rather dangerous - water/electric/gas). No real idea what I'm doing, see it as a kind of technical faith healing ?? - and we're both still here ?

Notice no-one's mentioned the 50 year old lightbulb....yet ?.
I mean I know they tried to convince us all to go low energy ( how crap were they, cost a fortune and last 10 mins!!) but there are some canny folk on here and why would you throw a good light bulb away ? ??

Where do I start? The appliances in this house (apart from the dishwasher) when I bought it were almost certainly installed when it was built in 1996. Just replaced the fridge a couple of months ago. New washing machine about a year ago. Not bad.

But I have furniture here dating back to the 1930s at least. Also cutlery. I recently had some cutlery replated that was used in our house when I was a child, the Art Deco design puts that in the 1930s too. My piano was a wedding present from my father to my mother, in 1950.

Just last week I tried the cool box I got in Lidl some time in the 1990s, which has a small refrigeration unit that runs off a car cigarette lighter socket. Still working. Had it on almost constantly on my recent road trip.

I've got a lot of tools belonging to my father and kitchen utensils belonging to my mother, and some of these belonged to her mother I think.
