As title suggests and article here:

My experience has been fine so far but I'm sure many on the forum helped with the survey

Most owners of any vehicle don't 'vote' in any surveys. Mostly it's those with some issues, the same with those who post on forums. Those without issues, which will make up tue vast majority, don't post on forums or enter surveys. Out of those, many complaints will actually be caused by user error, owners who simply don't understand what they've bought or those who think they know better than the manufacturer and compromise their vehicles by making changes/mods. Human nature.

While all of that is true, the relative statistics in surveys like this are generally accurate, it is true that MGs are getting more issues than most even if there are many happy people without issues out there.

I have certainly had more than my fair share. Now you could say I have been unlucky, but the statistics show that I am quite likely to be unlucky with an MG4!

The car got pushed on production to fill a certain market share empty at the time. Software wasn't ready and it showed. Things are getting sorted out, but in an EV a bad software can be a dealbreaker for the user experience. Regardless of the merits of the platform and the powertrain. (Amongs the best in the market still in my opinion).

Me too I'm reporting some annoiance with ISA end frontal camera, nothing crippling but still unfun to face daily.

Car is great, software isn't. I'm sure at some point it will be... but not now and I bet most complains are software related.

I wouldn't call it unreliable as all the annoying faults on mine don't render the car unusable.
It is annoying to have so many niggles on a new car though
After 10 years of Toyotas with zero faults and only one recall, then 3 years with the ZS ev with only two faults, the steering click and a faulty rear door handle, the MG4 is a pain.
Rubbish radio, deadly LKA, poor heater, rattle in the rear door and the inability to save driver settings to name a few are just too many to make it a good car.
It reminds me of when I used to drive old bangers, apart form the fact that I could fix the faults on those.

I've had my MG4 for 10 months and have just clocked up 16.5K - it has been very reliable.
Yes there a few little niggles - LKA, heater goes cold occasionally, loses mobile connection, but I have never owned any car that doesn't have a niggle it two!
On the whole, it's a good little car that does what it says on the tin!

Indeed. I do feel "reliability" means something else to many people.

If the car can get A to B then its reliable. If their are niggles like LKA/Noises etc that is under quality control vs reliability and most can be rectified.

And for the money - you CANNOT beat it!

I think the survey comments sum it up. It's not just the number of issues reported that were part of the survey it was also about how the dealers sort them out to our satisfaction. Even under warranty MG only paid for 55% of repairs 🤷‍♂️. Perhaps that's where MG UK and their dealers are going wrong ?

Quote from What Car Survey :-

"For every car that has suffered a fault, we ask in what area the issue occurred, plus how much it cost to repair and how long it spent in the workshop. This information is used to create a reliability rating for each model and brand where we have a large enough response rate."

Then specific to MG4 :-

"With issues in almost all of our fault categories, 30% of the cars reported on went wrong. MG only paid for repairs in 55% of cases, leaving 39% of owners with bills of £1000 or more. Repairs weren’t always swift, either; 68% of affected cars took more than a week to put right."

The survey also mentions what went wrong.

"Non-motor electrics 15%, interior trim 9%, bodywork 7%, motor 7%, sat-nav/ infotainment 7%, battery/charging system 4%, gearbox/clutch 4%, motor electrics 4%, air-con 2%, brakes 2%, steering 2%, suspension 2%"

No details on how owners treated the cars that had 'problems' either and MG refusing some warranty repairs may explain some of that. So many are user errors or combinations of user errors. I know a few that would break any car they owned from new. Same with phones, appliances etc and in their homes wearing things out years before ours. Typically they would be home "diy'ers'" who used a hammer to 'fix' everything. They're just bulls in china shops.

and also voted No. 4 in the top 20 best electric cars to buy in 2024.

Kia/Hyundai had to release a software update to stop their cars being stolen and other manufacturers also have issues.

Volvo recalled 72,000 EX30 due to a software issue

I have never owned a 100% perfect car. As has been mentioned it is about how a dealer and a manufacturer will respond to the issues you have.

This latest comparison of an MG4, against a BYD Dolphin and a Citroen e-C3 still puts the MG4 as the winner despite the negative reliability and poor MG Dealer service. I guess car reviewers are not bothered about such things.
