ZS EV Trophy LR
Hi there,

My wife and I have just retired and visited our local MG dealer to look at their electrical cars.

My wife's initial option was the MG ZS Trophy Long Range. Reason being fit and finish over the MG4 Trophy Long Range, and height of ride and ease of getting in and out. The ZS was not in stock, and reported some months wait list due the factory being unable to meet demand. As the ZS was off the table at the time, we looked at the MG4 and took it for a test drive (lovely.. :) ). slight down side is the height off the road, but I placed a deposit on a cancelled order in grey, which is now at the dealer.

A couple of days ago I found out that the dealer had a cancelled order on the MG ZS LR Trophy in red (which we were inially interested in), and we have arranged a test drive.

We are looking to keep the car was long as its runs. So my question, and I would say minor concern is charging:

The MG4 as I understand is 135Kw and the ZS only 80Kw, like most cars it will be used for local runs and charged via our yet to be installed 7Kw wall charger. But we will include a number of runs up and down the country as we make the most of our early retirements. Question ?? Have owners of the ZS found the relatively slower charging rate to be an issue when out and about please?
I know the ZS has its drawbacks regards handing and wallowing over the MG4, but neither of us are 'boy-racers' so it shouldn't be a issue, but I am just VERY interested in owners feedback.

Thank you for any and all replies.
David

Wouldnt swap my ZS LR Trophy for MG4. It suits my lifestyle down to the ground. Easy to get in and out off, practical and just does what it says on the tin. When you have your test drive, pop it into sport and floor it... that'll give you a smile :). My use is similar to yours, been on a few long drives (charged at home to 100% overnight). charges to 80% at rapid chargers in the time it takes me to have a coffee and pastry :giggle:
Oh...and if you get it wrong the wife will be giving you earache for years.. ha...;)
and... if the cancelled order has the panoramic roof, its game over.

Hi, Just looking to buy a newarly new MG ZS and worried about Long range in Winter/Summer, As you mentioned you have done few long dries, what is the realistic range you got in this car please?both in Winter and Summer if you can please.

I never used to like the SUV, but recently Her Indoors has developed some mobility issues and the higher ride height of the ZS is easier for access. I've done a few long trips now and as long as you have Zap-Map on your phone for a charge if you need it, you're good to go.

How is your experience using ZAP-MAP? stuck at chargers on waiting anytime?

Just before Christmas, I drove from Weston super Mare to Hounslow West Underground Station car park; 128 miles, 100% to 18% in one go. First journey was a bit of a nightmare with busy and broken chargers. Second time after Christmas was a dream, all chargers available and none broken. Now it's getting warmer, the range is increasing (208 miles at 80% charge).

Is it a long range you have please..? I am based in cheltenham and hounslow west is one of my common place, if you managed to do only one way on long-range I would be worried to be honest..

Zap-Map is good for finding chargers in an area you are not familiar with, but doesn't always show up-to-date status. On the whole though, if a charger is busy, it will show you others within a couple of miles.

Long Range Trophy. No need to be worried, there are numerous chargers on route. Someone on this forum put me onto a charging hub at Slough for my second journey. It is brilliant, multiple chargers at different kW outputs, with a coffee shop around the corner.

I have to do the journey again on May 1st, so I'm hoping the warmer weather will make a difference to my range. I'll report back when I've done it. :)

Ah.. ok.. so how come the real world range is so less that's 80% battery (60kw) for 128 miles just about 2miles for kw..?

Motorway driving at 8 degrees Celcius with the heater on. :)

I'm predicting that in May, I should arrive with around 30% charge. Also, Hounslow West Station car park has some 7kW charge posts you can plug into. I think it's 44p/kWh, but watch out for 5p/minute overstay charges when the battery is full (Should get a notification on your phone).

Hi. Where is the charging hub at Slough you recommend?

OK.. that's putting me in tricky situation now.. from cheltenham to hounslow it is about 99 miles one way and it is hard to complete one journey in a single charge..

The Charge Yard, Windsor Road, Slough. SL1 2EG. It's well hidden, you have to drive up what looks like a service road to the Tesco Express, but there's a nice little hub tucked away with canopies as well.

Thanks. I will be flying from Heathrow later this year and want to give the car a charge up before leaving it in a car park for 2 weeks

I am not sure of your concern / question ??‍♂️.
Are we talking the standard range ( Gen2 ) facelift model ZS EV here, or the long range version here ???.
The long range version should return around 250 miles of range in good weather conditions.
If your trip is 99 miles in each direction, you should achieve that without taking on a charge.
If it’s a standard range model, then maybe not.

It's a question turned into concern.. the above member said he managed to get 128 miles and yhe battery is down to 18% in which case I wouldn't be achieving 200 miles round trip..

Personally I think that the higher ride height of the ZS EV wins out over the MG4 if you have any type of mobility issues now, or could be faced with in the future.
We are all getting older that’s for sure !.
You mentioned the difference in the charging speed between both models ?.
TBH - I would not regard this as a massive problem myself.
You have recently retired and this means that life has ( and should ) have take on different time scale / peace to now.
If you are conducting a longer trip and need to make a stop to allow for a toilet break / collect a charge, and you intend to use a rapid charger.
Then honestly by the time you have taken on some refreshments etc the car will have collected enough extra range for you to continue on with your journey.
Even on a 50 Kw unit I would suspect.
As somebody who has recently retired, I think the rapid charging speed concerns are a little unfounded to be honest.
I would be paying a little more attention to comparing both cars in other ways.
Space / comfort being just two examples.

It's a question turned into concern.. the above member said he managed to get 128 miles and yhe battery is down to 18% in which case I wouldn't be achieving 200 miles round trip..
I think we may have crossed lines here ?.
We need to clarify if we are talking the standard range ZS EV or the ZS EV long range.
We have the long range version and if I could only achieve a range of 128 miles and had 18% left when returning home, then I would be super concerned to be honest !.
In decent weather conditions an achievable range on mixture of roads ( not a constant 80mph on the motorway ) I would hope / expect to return around 250 miles of range on the one single charge.
You will NOT achieve this I’m the standard range model IMO.
