A couple of weeks ago I had the R59 software update on my MG4 but ever since the car will not go into Park.

I reported it to the dealer who said they have another MG4 with the same problem and MG had sent a software fix but as the car won’t to Park, they can’t do a Power Off to implement the update. Therefore, the problem is ongoing and appears to be going round in circles.

The other car has been in the workshop for a month but as the park brake comes on when the P button is pushed my car is still driveable and the dealer says they will notify me when they fix the first car.

I am interested to find out if anybody else on the forum has/is experiencing the same problem? If you have, has it been fixed and how?

All feedback greatly appreciated.

First time I have heard of this one.

What are you doing then putting the hand brake on and turning the car off on the screen?

Did any modules get updated at the same time?

Do you mean the little square "P" switch isn't working ?

As mentioned, the hand brake does come on when the P button is pushed and the car goes off when you lock the doors. However, other problem remain as it no longer stops at the set charge limit and will always go to 100% if left to its own devices.

The park brake works as it should but the transmission/system does not go into Park.

I would disconnect the battery for 30 minutes then check again.

I had a rear window issue and this cured it.

A different issue I know but its worth a try.

When you reconnect, you will need to put all the windows fully down then fully up.

Also you will need to turn your steering wheel all the way right then all the way left.

Make sure it is dead ahead before disconnecting the battery.

Thanks everyone.
Bricktop and Susanna : As I understand, before the battery is disconnected the car has to be powered down and to do that it has to be in Park. It's a Catch 22 situation.

MAJ & FrancisM: Sorry I have a trophy but I hadn't updated my profile after the new options were added and it must have defaulted to SE.

Without punctuation, I don't understand this. Are you saying that on your car, the parking brake comes on when the P button is pushed, or the other car ?

Kithmo: On my car the park brake does come on.
Wadda: I have tried several times over the last couple of days but cannot get a file small enough to post on this forum. Might give it another again later (when looking for the supermoon perhaps).

First time I've heard of this too, I got the R59 update around a month ago but not come across this issue. Sounds like a huge pain in the backside.

Fingers crossed they can get it sorted for you soon.

Hello again everybody.

Sorry that I have failed to post a video but the clips are too big for this site and youtube wants a password from me that I can't find. I have added a picture taken after pressing the P button in the middle of the gear selector and shows the park brake is on but the transmission remains in Neutral rather than Park.

Anyway, I did disconnect and reconnect the 12V battery but unfortunately it hasn't solved the problem and the car still won't go into Park. It is also annoying that it now won't stop the battery charging past 80% so that means a lot of additional attention when charging.

One question, doesn't the HV circuit power down a couple of minutes after the doors are locked and if so, could the technician sit in the passenger seat and have a colleague lock the doors prior to doing the update?

Thanks again for all your inputs.

Why is the bottom of the bumper orange in your picture? I don't think that's normal is it...?

Folks,
Sorry for the delay in updating this thread but I've been involved in other matters.
First thing to say is that the car went back to the dealer on 1 Dec and they have fixed the software - it now goes into Park as normal.
However, as the radio hasn't been wiped out, I don't know if they disconnected the traction battery or not.
And the reason for the delay in updating this thread is because the battery would only to charge to 100% while the car had this problem. Now, having had the update it appears that the traction battery has lost 2% of its capacity in a few months so I have been busy grappling with that problem.

Anyway, as far as the transmission goes, it is now fixed so thanks for all your inputs and advice.
