Unbelievably, I am already having to look for car insurance.

I've had the car very nearly 12 months and just received the reminder today telling me they aren't renewing my policy!!!

I paid £598 last year with Hastings Direct.

It was a 'distress' purchase, as I was sat on the dealer forecourt struggling to find anyone who had heard of the X Power, let alone get insured on one!

So one year on, I am forced to shop around.

Pleasantly surprised as it happens.

Bought from Budget on confused.com for £376

Compare the markets cheapest was £486

Fully Comp
Protected NCD
Legal Cover
Courtesy Car
Personal accident cover.
Uninsured vehicle cover (my priority)

I have loaded my excess to £350 to get this figure.

It was cheaper to insure with the car on the drive and not in my garage???

For years, my policy has never cost me more than about £300, so I suppose I shall have to lump it.

Premiums are varying so much these days as we all know, interesting on drive to garage!
Even though my wife doesn't drive the car, I always add her as it does make a difference with a lower premium.

It does seem odd that drive is cheaper than garage. (Higher security in the garage). But I'm guessing that they think the car is more likely to be damaged getting in/out of the garage than simply getting on/off the drive. ?‍♂️

Agreed.
My wifes always on the policy, but I took her off, just to see, and it went up £50!

I must share this with you.....

Might be text heavy....

So I received my documents via email this afternoon, and it says at the bottom please check all details and call us if anything is wrong.

Well I checked and a good job I did as I put a years more No Claims Discount than I thought I had.

I should hate for a company to ever weasel out of a claim due to an oversight on my part, so got straight on the blower to the insurers.

Very nice girl answered and once through security.........Oh heres one for you.....

One question was DOB, I said 19 04 67 and she said can I ask for the full year in numbers?

I said well it's not bloody likely to be 1867 is it???!!!

She laughed, but had to? insist I tell her...1,9.

Anyway I digress...

I told her what I had done and wanted her to give me a fresh quote based on the correct NCB details.

Bearing in mind I had already done this on Confused.com.

I took a year OFF my NCD and....wait for it.....
Got a REFUND of 42p

So imagine my surprise when the delightfully pleasant young lady came back with an increase of ...............£104 pounds
£104 bleedin pounds! (evening mods)

I retrieved myself from the floor and said would you be so kind as to break down the extra costs for me please?

Well, because I had a years less no claims than stated, plus the £45 change of policy fee.....

I said I'm not paying that.
But...
No.
I've already re-run the policy online and the price has actually gone down 42p!

She then started to give me some flannel which I cut dead and said it's OK, cancel my policy and give me a full refund please.
(14 Day Cooling Off Period) ((Know your rights!))

Ooo Mr Bricktop (?) we don't want to lose you so soon, let me speak to my supervisor.

They kept me on the phone for a while but the upshot was they backtracked from £480 to the original £376.

My mistake originally, granted, but I do not expect to be ridden quite so roughly from behind, with zero lubrication offered or recieved. (Apologies)

Imagine if I didn't know my rights, I would have been down another £104!

I wonder how often they get away with this sort of caper?

Unfortunately most insurance companies are the same. Their policies are cheaper online than over the phone.

I fell out with Direct Line many many years ago because their renewal was always a lot more than going online and getting a fresh quote as a new customer. I even wrote to them complaining about it but got the standard fobbing off letter. I haven't insured anything with them or their subsidiaries since.

“There are various reasons why keeping your car in a garage may result in a more expensive premium. Some insurers may feel garages can pose their own security risks. If the garage is connected to your property, your car could get taken in the event of a home break-in, while if the garage is unconnected, you may be unable to hear the thief entering your car.

“Insurers may also feel the car is more likely to be damaged if you keep it in a garage. For instance, there could be a greater chance of bumps and scrapes when trying to fit today’s larger cars into small garages. Items being stored in the garage, like a toolbox, could also fall onto the vehicle and damage it.

“However, it’s key that you consider your circumstances carefully before changing where you park. If the alternative to your garage is somewhere more exposed, like on the road outside your home, then your policy could go up rather than down, and you’d be making your vehicle more vulnerable in the process. Ultimately, security is the most important factor, so if your garage is the safest place for your car, then keep it there.

“Plus, every provider assesses the risk of where you park differently, so it’s important to remember this before switching your parking place. Many insurers may still feel that your garage is a safer place to park, so consider the security of all your options and how they may impact your own individual policy before making a move.”

Noticed the other day when looking at what insurance group the XPower comes under it seems to be group 40 which compares quite well with other cars of similar performance
Tesla Model 3 = Group 50
Hyundai Ioniq 5 = Group 49
Cyberster Trophy = Group 47
Smart 1 Brabus = Group 38
Smart 3 Brabus = Group 41

Hello Chris,

We're really sorry. We won't be able to renew your policy this year

Unfortunately, we can't offer you insurance for your car next year. It means your policy will end on 4th September 2024 at 11:59pm. We're really sorry about this and we wanted you to know about the decision behind it.

Why we can't offer you a renewal quote

Even if you're a very good driver and nothing has changed from last year, we set our premiums based on lots of different factors. These factors can include the increased risk of a claim associated with your vehicle type (even if you're still insuring the same vehicle) or the increased risk of a claim in your area. For example, in some postcodes there's been a dramatic rise in thefts.

When risks like these increase significantly, it becomes difficult to offer affordable cover and means we can no longer offer a price. It doesn't happen very often - but unfortunately, we're sorry that in this case we can't offer you a renewal quote.

You're not being declined insurance

Although we can't give you a price this year, this doesn't mean you've been declined insurance. So if another insurer asks if you've been declined insurance, you can tell them you haven't.

You might still get insurance elsewhere

While we can't offer you a quote this year, this doesn't mean you can't get insurance elsewhere. Insurers' prices are based on their own experiences with customers, so every insurer has a different view of risk.

Remember, you're legally required to have insurance if your car is on the road. We'd recommend you visit some price comparison websites to see what's available from other insurers.

If you do struggle to find insurance elsewhere, the British Insurance Brokers' Association (BIBA) may be able to help you search for an alternative insurance provider. You can find more information about BIBA at www.biba.org.uk

Proof of no claims discount

Please keep this information safe, as it's your official proof of the no claims discount you have.

You'll have the following years of no claims discount when your policy ends, unless you have a claim between now and then.

What a load of cobblers. ?

This is an out of the box solution to car insurance...set up your own insurance company. If you are saving £300 - £500 a year in premiums just put the money aside to pay for any accident repairs

Its the £3,000,000 you need to set aside in the first place to set it up that might be a slight problem.

But it's how some companies do it and those rich enough to have super-cars..

But think of the benefits, you could have your own personal technician on 24hr callout, red carpet from your front door to the car, press conferences and so much more!! ???

Note that you only need about 10,000 friends and family involved to get the price down to something reasonable!

This forum has 12,000 registered members and whilst they are not all UK based that's £250 per member for the £3,000,000 ?

Mines due for renewal in Oct, I am with them too as they said there was no difference in cost when i changed cars, and my previous car was a 307 diesel ? so I am so looking forward to my non renewal then ? Ironically they have always fought me to stay with them at renewal time as I've been with them for years.
