Not an MG
Hello everyone here. As the title suggests, I have put a deposit down on an SE LR despite the issues people are having with the oil leak. I honestly believe this will be resolved within the next month or two.

I do have a couple of areas of concern though. Although the 4 was an excellent drive, the Lane Keep Assist was in my opinion, very dangerous. I am currently driving an MG HS whilst Hyundai source a replacement engine for my 1 year old Tucson (it has been 4 months so far). Lane Keep Assist in the HS and Tucson were both very good but the 4 tried pulling me into the Kerb. Obviously if MG can do LKA in the HS, I can't see why they can't get it right in the 4. Hopefully a software update will resolve this issue.

My main question is about the plastic cover over the rear lights/spoiler and the plastic C Pillar window. In videos I've seen online, I've noticed micro scratches in these two areas on the press cars. Has anyone considered protecting these areas? I was wondering about a film coating or vinyl wrap to prevent the scratches.

Any thoughts would be welcome.

Regards

James.

Ref. LKA - others have suggested turning it off and using TJA instead. Seemingly that works better and provides a degree of autonomous driving.

Thanks for that. That will be fine when on the motorway on cruise but will TJA work when cruise control isn't activated?

I agree with your prediction that the main mg4 issues will be cleared up within the next month or two.

What happened to your Tuscon engine? Sounds major league for such a young, 1 year old car?

TJA = Traffic Jam Assist. It's intended for use in low speed traffic, but has the by-product of working like autonomous driving on the motorway. :)

It was a 1.6D mild hybrid. When I took it for it's service in March, they informed me there was a recall for pulleys but the parts weren't available. In June the pulley failed. I had it recovered to a dealer in Macclesfield and that same weekend they received another 3 Tucsons with the same issue. That was just one dealer and the same engine was also used in the Sportage so I'm imagining they are looking for quite a few engines.

I drove 'unreliable' Fiats for years and never had anything serious go wrong. Suffice to say, I'm not impressed with Hyundai.

I'm not surprised!
A nightmare by the sounds of it. Can you imagine how much that'll cost them when it's all done and dusted.
I was actually considering a KONA N, as I like an SUV which is a bit nuts (I've a JUKE NISMO RS with 220hp and a limited slip diff and it's mad), but you read this and that and it put me off. And in the US and Canada they've just issued a major recall for their new 8 speed wet DCT, which I guess will soon apply to UK cars, too.
Good luck with it, but I guess you're going to be ditching the Tuscon and getting the MG4 instead?

Yes, that is the plan.

In the US, they also have a problem with people stealing the Tucsons using a USB dongle. I thought there was an immobiliser installed but they seem really easy to take away over there, don't know about UK cars.

The Juke sounds fun :)

Yes, I've never had a car before which has had so many average reviews, but for one reason or another I really like. It's the dog's car after my Mrs got her MINI, as my ND MX-5 is pampered so much that it isn't even driven when the floor's wet lol, or hardly at all over winter, so the NISMO RS makes a good runabout. It's got that kind of spaghetti SUV handling, but it seems to behave differently depending on what mood it's in. Somedays it seems laid back, others it just wants to finish you off.
Like you said, I'm sure those mg4 teething issues will be sorted out soon enough, and they probably seem elementary compared to that Tuscon engine problem.

I’m guessing it is a different system from a different supplier for the MG4, so does some things better and some worse. I always turn off LKA in any car as I don’t like someone else steering.

I like cars with 'personalities and moods' lol. I've had lots of Fiats and Alfas that have those traits and are generally hated by the general motoring community but they have never been characterless like German cars.

I'm really looking forward to getting my hands on my 4, when it's ready.

Have a test drive booked for tomorrow afternoon. Can anyone tell me what the expected deposit on the day will be if I decide to go ahead ?
I would be buying outright.

Also, what's the current wait time for an SE standard range? , and is the price on the day of order fixed regardless of delivery time ?

Thanks.

Different dealers take different deposits. In my case I paid £339 (by credit card - balance will be cash - so that I have Section 75 protection as a backup).

@Tight Git How do you know for sure it's on that transport? (My dealer hasn't told me anything about how they're getting the car - just when they should be getting it; which is tomorrow per the screen I saw in the showroom).

Ok, thanks for the replies. Guess I'll just have to see what the dealer offers tomorrow if I like the car.
2 hour time slot so hopefully will get a good feel for it .
I'm inclined to go for a 23 reg delivery if possible given the current 'issues' ;)

Dickson's took £500 from me, paid by credit card. Red Trophy, delivery end of January, they say.
