Hi All,
I hope you don’t mind me chipping in on the MG4 Range thread (I have recently taken receipt of a ZS Trophy LR (72 plate) and I am a EV virgin), but just wanted to put in my ‘two pennies worth’ on range issues, consumption and charging. I will reign in my use of !&? ?
I got my ZS delivered in the recent cold snap (currently just shy of 500 miles of driving) and had the shock of my life on my first journey in it. Attempted a 120 round trip along the hilly, but reasonably fast flowing roads of West Wales, in an average of minus 3. Heaters on 22c & no.4 , wipers, music, in Eco on with regen 3. Battery at 96% and estimated range left of 167. After 90 miles, and literally in the middle of nowhere, my battery went below 20%. ?
By complete luck there was a community charger about 4 miles away. Hour and a half later I had enough charge to make the final 25 miles home. Suffice to say I thought I’d made a horrific mistake going for an electric.
My ICE was a 15 year old diesel Citroen C5, and contrary to what many notice in their ICE cars, mine never did anything different mpg wise no matter what the weather. I’ve owned it 4 years done over 40k miles and the readout mpg (and actual calculated top up) has me at 52mpg give or take. Freezing cold, heaters flat out, as heavy footed as I like. So the vast swing in ‘range’ that EV’s clearly have (and which appears to be an almost dirty secret) is shocking. But through pouring over this forum, I now at least understand why.
My first 500 miles in the ZS has been at about 3-3.2, but what is unnerving is how quickly the battery percentage and GOM can dissipate on a journey. It says 137 miles/67%, you do 40 mile trip, four up in 8c in the wind and the rain, mixed town/ motorway and get back with 30miles and 20%. It just wrecks your confidence.
However, I’ve just done my third balance charge from low % to 100 using Zappi home (never used a fast charger) and am noticing an improvement in the GOM each time. Last two balance chargers have been conducted in similar temp around 7-8c and over the three range has gone from 180 to
192 to 208. I’m yet to see if I actually see anything like this yet (second 120 miler got me home with 38%).
Anyway, sorry, this has turned into an essay, but just wanted to say I feel the frustration of those seeing significantly less returns than we’re lead to believe might occur. Having an EV is so starkly different from an ICE it’s hard to think of a comparison. Don’t get me wrong, I love the car, it is, and will be for next 20 months, vastly cheaper to run (£12 for 200 miles elec compared to £30 for the same with derv - home charging obvs), but I am not confident yet.
All I’d say is I'm going to keep doing longer runs and balance charging in the hope this provides a more stable and predictable range vs GOM. Also, someone mentioned using either Eco or Eco+ to achieve balance charging on a Zappi. I think this maybe incorrect. These settings only are relevant to balance out charge vs draw within home or when balancing charge where solar is involved. Fast is the setting for Zappi. The car does the rest. See pic.
Massive thanks for the invaluable info on the forum. Cheers.
Happy New Year by the way!
