Hello everyone, potential new MG EV owner here. Hope you can all help with a few questions I have before I make the final decision. I'm looking at buying a used MG ZS EV as my next car (it will be my first foray into EVs). The options I've got are both 2021 pre-facelift and have reasonable mileage (just under 20k for one, just over 40k for the other).

I've been to test drive one of them and liked the way it drove, but I was slightly concerned that before I took it out, the guy at the dealership had to jump start the 12v battery to get the car to start. Is this something to worry about, or is it normal for an EV that may have been sitting for a while?

As for the other, main battery, I asked the sales rep if he could let me know the battery health that was reported at it's last service and he said that he couldn't say what it was as the MG dealership, who had carried out the service, wouldn't release the information due to GDPR. Does this sound right?

Final question, is it worth paying approx £1.7k extra for the car that has done around 25k less miles?

How have you all found your MG ZS's in regards reliability, battery health, real range and the like? Would you recommend others to buy one?

Thanks!

Hi,

The 12V battery is no big deal, if the car has been sitting a while they can go flat. I'd get it tested and replaced if its no good.

I would not buy either car unless you can get the battery health information. You can get an OBD bluetooth device to connect to your phone to provide this info, cheap online to buy.

Regardless of the kilometers, base your purchase on battery health and overall vehicle condition.

I get 230km from my MGZS SR - mostly highway driving at 110kph. I really like the car, very fun to drive in town.

I was in your shoes couple of months ago, first made my mind up to buy electric, then to be MG, then to be second-hand, and then between MG5 and ZS, I ended up with ZS because of the overall size + a decent car popped up... if you can, go for Mk2 ZS. I paid about 2-3,000 more than average Mk1 with about the same mileage. Remember that there will be more and more of them available as 2-3 year leases come to an end so the price will drop too.

empty 12v battery probably means it was standing there without being "turned on" for a while. as the others say, it's not a big deal but it might be if the main battery was left undercharged for months ... from memory, it's supposed to be left at about 50% charge if left for longer periods of time.

search for OBD2 on this forum and you'll see posts and links for some cheap ones on Temu or AliExpress and how to use them. Also, there are some posts about buying second hand, search for those too.

What i would recommend is to compare whatever you are looking at with cargiant.co.uk prices and mileages. I would even travel there if you find a good deal. I bought mine there.

Used MG ZS for Sale in London | Cargiant

Any questions, please ask.

As with any secondhand car, it's worth getting a second opinion from the AA or RAC, etc, and they will do a full inspection of the car and it's batteries.

No. The GDPR refers to personally identifiable data. There is no such thing regarding the battery's charging condition.

Was wondering where would be appropriate thread - without yet another random thread starting - to post the update on how pricing might develop sooner than we think:

Biden announces 100% tariff on Chinese-made electric vehicles

NO POLITCS - just news on how future prices in Europe and here might be affected - imagine ZS costing double overnight !!!!

Agree with @AAA mileage club on this.
Someone is fobbing you off to avoid doing their job.

Its possible tarrifs (or higher than existing if there are any existing) may be added in the EU and UK in the future. Wouldn't be 100% though.

40k is steep for a used facelift. Try autotrader they have decent mileage ones for a lot less

I have a MGZS EV exclusive and love it. I have left my car I driven for a month but it does start no problem. Perhaps the the one your tried had been sat there for many months. I have done 70k miles and my SOH is 96% so I wouldn’t bother paying for less miles. I find it very reliable. It is fantastic in the city, very economical. On the motorway I stick to 60-65mph.

I got the ZS EV trophy and have been driving for a month and a half. So far loving the drive. Very smooth and comfortable. Kids love the panoramic sun roof. Have to get used to an EV in terms of charging the car. Charging stations here in Singapore is adequate with more being set up. Would recommend it. But over here we don’t have the long range though.
