Tesla Supercharger Issue MG5 LR

I have for almost 6 months used Tesla open chargers almost exclusively with my MG4 Extended Range and the MG4 Long Range I traded it in for. Haven't used them for a few weeks now but never had an issue. Did you try forcing the infotainment/vehicle control screen to reboot by holding down the home screen? For the first time ever, I had an issue starting a charge at home and did this, which sorted the issue out.

A gentleman on this thread mentioned he'd had his PFL updated free during a servie at Derby MG.
Soooo in April this year I booked in with them, even though it's an 160 mile round trip from Scunthorpe.
I was booked in for tomorrow 17/07/24, but yesterday a lady from MG Derby rang to inform me that MG will no longer sanction this update as free.
The charge for this Tesla update is now £120.
Well, with the car being on contract hire from MG and not belongong to me, I saw no point in continuing down that route.
I have 2 more years on the contract, and can see no possibility in recovering that amount through cheaper tariffs at Tesla charging points.
MG at Derby were very cooperative during the discussion with the service manager, he even offered a discount, which in the end I declined.

The MG4 is a different platform and has never had the error that caused problems with the 5,

Mine is a 22 plate which the MG Arnold Clark in Edinburgh have said there's an update available at no cost to me. Was it them who you spoke to as well @Archev? Have you tried any other dealers out of interest?
Hi all, just to update on this as it's been a while. I had the car (MG5 LR pre-facelift early 22 plate) booked into Arnold Clark MG Edinburgh for May and showed up on the day to be told they didn't have a booking for me despite me phoning and booking it previously! Rather annoyed but they apologised and nothing I could do, so booked in for today. Took the car and got the update today, but have yet to test it works with Tesla charger as the nearest is 25 miles away. I asked for a copy of the software update that was applied but was told it gets sent to MG so I couldn't have a copy, which didn't make any sense. Currently no way of checking it's the right update and will have to wait to check until I'm near a Tesla charger and update here. It was all done under a recall according to Arnold Clark so no cost to me.

6 weeks ago I booked my 2023 MG5 FL Trophy in to Wilson's Epsom for its first service, emphasising that I wanted the Tesla update done when it received its service today. On collecting the car, and handing over £157.20, I asked if the update had been done as it didn't appear on my invoice. The assistant checked and said 'yes, it has had the recall software update done'. I won't be able to check that this 'recall update' has made the car Tesla-compatible until I get to a Tesla open charger...

I've just downloaded the Android app, created an account and clicked on 'Find a Charger' but I can't see how to tell which ones are MG compatible. Please would someone tell me where I'm going wrong.

You just click "Find a Charger". When you set up the account you'll not have registered a Tesla (assuming that you don't own one). Due to this it only shows those chargers that are open to all EVs. There isn't any specific to MG.

Ah, that explains it, thank you. There's a filter 'superchargers open to other EVs' on the windows app but I couldn't find it on the Android one; now I know why. I've just been wading through all the posts under this heading and if anyone's interested on p13 post #252 Lovemyev gave a link to a very helpful video that has answered many of the questions I had about using Tesla chargers:

Yes, I am aware they are different platforms having owned two ZS EV's, an MG5 and two MG4's. Was just sharing my experience and a potential suggestion that might work on the MG5.

Hi, Could you post an update once you've tried the Tesla chargers. Wilson's is my nearest dealer but having had bad experiences there in the past (several years ago with a Nissan) I've avoided them since. Maybe they need another try.

I had my annual service last month and I asked for the update to be applied at the York MG Dealership, and they said they could do it but that it would cost £67! I said "no thank you!". Should they have asked for a fee?

Should be free for facelift models but not, so far, for pre-facelift.
Tried calling 9 dealerships myself on a facelift model; all are chargeable and advising that MG will no longer cover the cost, despite it originally being covered.

The cheapest quote I managed to get was £96 (inc. VAT) for 0.6 hrs labour from Brindley MG Wolverhampton.

I will be taking mine for its first service in September and I will be requesting this work to be done. If they refuse to install the update (bug fix) then I will pursue the matter via small claims court / ombudsman. Maybe we should initiate a group action, there seems to be a few of us that have this bug in our MG's.

I got the impression it is chargeable as a separate item but is free if part of a regular service when updates are normally done.

Mind you, there have been so many differing customer experiences and contradictory messages from MG, it is a wonder that anyone actually knows the answer.

I'll be finding out next month.

I will report back

I am fixed :)

I took the car for its service to my local dealer MG Chiswick. Initially the view was I needed a replacement EVCC however after discussing the options and the fact I was on a service plan, the agreement was they would try the update and if it failed I would pay for a new unit.

Good news the update worked and I was able to charge yesterday at the Tesla open chargers in Uxbridge.

I have also done test charges at home and a fast charger at Sainsbury’s all worked :)

This my go to dealer. I think as dealers go they are the best I have ever used.

Re the bolded part of the quote:

That seems to depend on the dealership involved.

As I've reported elsewhere in the forums mine was done FOC and not during a service. Although I do need to add that I was a client of the specific dealership for something in excess of 30 years and a variety of cars by different manufacturers. As of now I've not been able to test whether the update "works" because there are no Open Tesla Chargers within about 50 miles of where it live; and the dealership was scheduled to close permanently a few weeks after the update was done.
