MG4 Software Update Thread

I couldn't either but I was a little nervous as I was about to do something bold after a glass of wine (while parked on private land). I will take it for a spin in the morning.

Yes, it was a very simple process and very fast although I had a wee moment where I couldn't remember what to do about the HV error. Then I had a vague recollection and put the break pedal down to put it into ready mode. I am so pleased that LKA is so easy to disable now as it really was a fiddle for me and I am a poor multitasker.

I also tried Amazon Music which works but the app is awful so I'll stick to YT Music in Android Auto.

Two things to check tomorrow:

1. I wonder if ACC is any better on bends ands overtaking or if that requires lower level updates. ACC was just a little tweak away from brilliance.
2. I am going to have to trawl the forums and find out how to update the built in sat nav maps now (although I probably won't use them either). I have seen this mentioned before on here.
Pull down menu requires R46, R40 didn't have top bar, R59 isn't allowed to overlay
ACC change requires module updates

Did you do both avn & MCU?
Without mcu update star buttons may not work correctly

I did mine a few weeks ago using this.

I did AVN then ECU.

Great. I am downloading the files now. Thank you.

R59 seems to be working fine. The ability to disable ELK is the basic benefit. I failed to get a subsequent map update done. I am doing this using an NTFS formatted drive in the RHS USB C port. Currently copying data again. It may be worth updating maps data before switching to R59.

Map update method changed from R46 upwards. You need to use this site to download the map, there is a slight difference in the file contents. - just enter your vin number

Hello,
I recently bought my new MG4 and like most of you here, despite several very specific requests about getting it with the latest software, and repeated assurances that that would be the case, I obviously found myself with a somewhat obsolete firmware.
I'm in Italy, my car is a Luxury with the rear wiper, software version R40.
I've read the last 30 or so pages of this thread, and I've seen discussions about the Trophy and Se versions, but not the Luxury, IIRC. So I have a couple of questions:
  • Can I use the update files found here to update my car, being Italian with the steering wheel on the left? Or are those files for UK only?
  • Can those files be used on a Luxury, or are they specific for the Trophy?
  • They only update the infotainment, and not the other modules, right? Will there be incompatibility problems with the modules, if I upgrade?

I've contacted the dealer where I bought the car (5 hours from here, because only they had the color I wanted), complaining about the software issue. They offered to arrange for me to take the car to the nearest authorized dealer and have them update the car, at their expense. But the nearest dealer is still more than an hour away.
Would I get a better/safer update if I let them do it, or is it just the same if I do it myself using these files? I'd like to try R59, since I don't use the hotspot.
I also wouldn't want to do it if the dealer can use that as an excuse to refuse upgrading it again in the future.

(another not related question, about the top bar in AA. I've read here that R59 does not overlay. What does that mean?)

Thank you in advance,
Cristian

@Quaxo76 I would go to the dealer as there could be other modules that require software updates.
Make a day of it, take your partner and go for a coffee while the car's being seen to.

Trophy & luxury are the same when it comes to the infotainment, MG have 2 versions
1100 ismart lite (currently R33 in Europe)
1300 full ismart (currently R59 in Europe)

There have been a couple of LHD European owners that have done it with no issues

But as Ian has said, if the dealer is offering it's better that way as the modules can be done at the same time which makes more of a difference to the car

Overlay is allowing menus etc to be viewed without going to the home page first, imagine on a computer you have a program with 'always on top' enabled, you can still see the task bar but any other programs will be hidden behind it unless you minimise it
R40 is like full screen, hides task bar
R46 is like maximised, task bar shown & other apps can be opened on top
R59 is like maximised always on top, taskbar but nothing else

With the map update, leave the usb in for 10-20 mins until it can read it ok. If you pull it out early it'll corrupt the usb and it does take a while

Hmm as my update from R30 to R46 went so well before with a usb stick, tempted to try R59 if it's easy enough to downgrade again

it means you cannot swipe down the MG menus from the top bar when AA is running - you'd have to exit AA using the home button first
But 1100R33 in the SE doesn't have that issue, despite having the same top bar visible ... you can have AA running and still use the swipe down menu. So it's only an issue with 1300R59. :)

iSmart has nothing to do with Infotainment versions in the car. :)

Exactly the same issues on my ER Trophy, new 6 weeks ago - r40, lost Bluetooth once so far, ACC 5mph steps and slowing on bends. Also a bulge in the undertray from new. I put it down to the car having been built over a year ago, according to the Type certificate, so needs updating. Need to book it in to the dealer, I guess.
Have you had any luck getting your dealer to resolve these issues? Mine is not willing to resolve them because:

"After reading the customers email regarding software update on Specific modules we have come to a full stop.

SCUK001 was an outstanding campaign that has now been dissolved and is no longer available for download from MG, This was only allowed to be completed on vehicles with the outstanding campaign that the Vin was listed to do and claimable through MG warranty.

The MCU was not updated due to the software update process change through MG ref: AS-24-003 without vehicle fault. Any software update, not part of a service campaign or recall has to be authorised by our MG Technical Support Engineers."

Do these people have absolutely no concept of customer support?

I love my MG4 but have to say that some of their penny pinching on servicing is detrimental to brand perception and loyalty. I do intend to look into Kia's approach before replacing my remaining petrol vehicle as I have no idea if they are any better.

Unfortunately I think this has been established many times since the launch of the MG4. I would no longer recommend anyone to buy one unless they are prepared to put up with a lot of pain.

Nothing has improved in the 2 years since launch, all MG want to do is shift cars, not support them after sale. I suspect eventually this will impact sales as the reputation of MG gets further damaged and word spreads. Shame, as the basic product is very good.

I haven't got round to contacting the dealer yet. Must do it, the car forgot my phone again this morning!

MG disagrees with that statement

The step 7 says: Update the MCU of FICM to the latest version by SIPS

Obviously we can't do it at home, unless we have a SIPS (SAIC Integrated Program System) system which costs a lot and is not easy.

What happens if you don't update the FICM MCU?

I updated via SIPS before updating to R46, when I updated to R46 and MCU I actually put an older version on
I think that's why they say to update MCU via SIPS so you can see which version the car has & what the latest version is
The MCU affects how the infotainment interacts with the rest of the car for example ⭐ buttons
68.4.7.0 is the latest via SIPS which is the same as R59
68.4.3.0 is R46
68.3.8.0 is R40
68.3.3.9 is R30
68.3.3.6 is R24
