Hi all...first post on here so please go easy on me.
We have a MG4, bought new last year and we've done about 30k km.
It's a great little car but we've literally been wrestling with its very well known lane keeping assist issues.
We live in rural part of Ireland and the LKA makes the Car very unsafe on leafy, shadowy and shady roads.
We've had many near misses and have kept MG Cars informed about this.
They keep promising a software update to address the issue but it never materialises.
Anyway, I know this is a well covered topic so I'll try and keep it short.
A couple of weeks ago my young daughter who only recently passed her test borrowed the Car and the LKA drove the car off the road into the ditch.
The tyre was burst and there may be suspension damage too.
I had the Car towed back to the dealer from the scene as this was the last straw for us.
We're currently in dispute with the main dealer over all this.
We would either like the Car updated and made safe or for them to take it back.
I believe that this is a problem worthy of a recall.
What I'd like to know from you guys is does anyone know of any other accidents involving the LKA or of anyone else returning their Cars.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks a mill
Toby

I think you'd be better off consulting a Solicitor for litigation if I am honest. If your insurance covers Legal Assistant use that.

You can report things which you believe are defective under the DVSA if driving in the UK, in Ireland there maybe another body which can investigate, I know previously they looked and tested but didn't warrant a recall or update.

I am unsure if any way to give MG feedback directly other than via a Dealer, but MG now being Chinese owned who knows what process that would entail!

I do typically turn it off via the pull down menu as soon as the vehicle is in "Ready" mode now. They really do need to let us bind a button or change the pressing sequence from TJA/Cruise Control for LKA. It is still one of the most aggressive I have used and perhaps I am not driving as centrally as I think, however when you've been driving for so long and never had an accident you'd think you might know best over some cameras and a prediction model.

Thanks...yeah that may well be the next step unfortunately.
I was speaking to an independent Motor assessor and was advised to do as much digging on the issue.
Because it's the way the Car is setup not a fault as such, they can't diagnose and identify the problem, it just comes down to driver experience then unfortunately.

I am unsure if there are logs which can be grabbed from the vehicle, I am sure there are as I have seen some exposed on here previously. I think they can be grabbed via USB but again its probably best your insurance / legal assistance to request these properly and perhaps independently from the dealer.

To be honest I'm suprised that its taken this long for someone to report an accident because of LKA - too late for you but just put the car in towing mode - as it permamently switches off LKA (down side is parking sensors no longer work)

Sorry that happened to your Daughter, Toby. Hope she's OK.

Oh and.

Shame it wasn't under better circumstances. 🙂👍

If I remember rightly it was in Norway. I don't know how solid the evidence was though.
There is enough evidence that LKA has and still is in some cases not fit for purpose and in some cases dangerous. No chance MG will accept any responsibility though. It's a characteristic 😉

Well, I tend to disagree on this until my lawyer gives up on it.
Good luck, all the legal stuff can only be a good thing and may assist everyone long-term in getting MG to step up and take responsibility for all their cars' characteristics!!

All they want to do is sell cars and that's where the service stops

Thing is, I'm using a EU regulation to make them understand they need to step up, or to pay me back. Not sure you can use the same arguments in Scotland.

Probably not, although Scotland voted overwhelming to stay in the EU, unfortunately it didn't work out that way

All I can say is good luck
I was very close to having an accident, even went to the dealer afterwards & they said there was nothing they could do but this was months ago
For me the worst one was going around a bend in torrential rain, the car beeped & yanked the wheel which caused me to briefly lose control of the car, luckily it regained grip before I hit anything, couldn't say if I went over the line as I couldn't see them due to the rain & water
I've also had it yank me into the hard shoulder on the motorway due to a puddle at an angle across the lane, it thought the lane followed the puddle

I turn it off when I get into the car. Every. Single. Time. If I (very occasionally) forget, I turn it off as soon as I notice. Usually I notice by the appearance on the driver's screen before anything gets yanked. Once when I didn't notice, I thought I'd had a puncture or the suspension had gone or something else in the disaster category had occurred. I was frankly relieved to realise it was "only" the LKA and switched it off before it did any more damage.

All manufacturers have an excuse in such conditions. They advice you to disable the system: "Go fiddle with your screen".

To be fair, I test drove an Audi Q4 E-tron, the LKA was more aggressive than the MG. I don't have a real issue with it on main roads, but on narrow B-roads it has done quite scary things!
