Not an MG
Hi,
I've been looking at getting an MG4 for a while. What's holding me back is the negative stuff I've read about lane keep assist i.e. that it's a bit unpredictable and even dangerous under certain conditions. I think the current firmware is R63, has this issue been sorted out in this FW? I'd like to able to use the safety systems like lane keep with the confidence they are working. Having to turn them off each time you start the car to stay safe seems like an ironic pain.

Thanks for any advice.

R63 has nothing to do with the safety systems. There have been updates to make the systems work pretty much as they should.
The issues have come from the inconsistencies between various cars of the same age and how the system behaves.

I would recommend a lengthy drive of the car you intend buying, try out on various road types and speeds.

Be aware that if you book a test drive the car you drive may well have old software where LKA/ELK is permanently turned off so as not to put off prospective customers. It was outdated software on my test drive car, all be that was some time ago, however I recently had a courtesy MG4 that had outdated software on it with the system permanently off so the dealers are still at it. If I had experienced the LKA/ELK on my test drive then it would have been a deal breaker for me. I can sort of put up with it now on short local journeys and it's quite easy now with latest software to turn off if going on longer journeys with speeds over 30mph.

I find the LKA/ELK fine. Yes it twitches here and there but as long as you have a normal grip on the steering wheel it does nothing. I’ve intentionally let the car drive on an empty stretch of winding highway without holding the wheel at all and the lane assist gently curves around bends and drifts minimally to try and stay centred in the lane. Then when the car realised I wasn’t holding the wheel it turned of the lane keeping assist and reverted to emergency lane keeping, that one is a jolt but it works. I think that should be a jolt anyway because you’re clearly not able to stay on the road yourself if it comes to that.

I’ve ever only turned it off on outback roads that are narrow and don’t have clear lines because the car doesn’t like you getting close to the edge (which you need to do to pass oncoming traffic safely). Otherwise it never bothers me.

It’s just like any “intelligent” software, it can’t actually think for itself so it gets things wrong sometimes, you need to manage your expectations of what a computer can do.

Unfortunately not everyones cars systems work like yours and in some cases it's at best really not fit for purpose and at worst bloody dangerous and that is with a normal grip on the steering wheel

Same.
We got our "77" about 2 months ago (a December 23 build). We'd actually gone to try out a base model 64 to replace my wife's town car but due to a series of serendipitous events ended up with the top of the range 77.
I subsequently took it for two 1000km long distance country drives to see how it handled replacing my car (the long distance one).
It worked just beautifully.
Yes a couple of niggles with the LKA/ELK but nothing particularly untoward.

After reading lots of these posts it seems to me that those with that problem have earlier build cars with associated software that wasn't so good...
Unfortunately MG don't have the same software/firmware release and maintenance capabilities as Tesla and those early purchasers have been let down.

As long as it's new or a late 23 build I'd have no hesitation on that front.
More to the point, we didn't and indeed we subsequently got a second one (a "51") to replace my wife's "town car" needs as my "long distance ICE car was no longer required.

She's not had any issues.

* We have in UK parlance a Trophy ER and an SE SR. They both fulfil their requirements just dandily.

** Whilst I don't mind the LKA/ELK I don't generally use it. I use ACC all the time when driving on the open road but turn of ELK. I'm quite capable of keeping the car in my lane where I want it. I use ACC for speed control and distance between the car in front if on a busy highway.

When I get in the car I make one or two settings changes.

If in town I go to the driving options menu and enable OPD. That setting really should stay as last set.

If I'm also going to do any sort of longer drive I also use the "side" pull-down menu to disable ELK. That is all.

All sensitivity settings are low. Those choices stay across drives.

My car at 21 months isnt as twitchy on LKA as it used to be. Either is learnt or ive adapted to stop it triggering

I have had a couple occasions when its seen an approach of a vehicle in town and it decided to do an emergency stop

Google "ev lane keeping assist problems" and you will find the issues are not unique to MG. In fact if you watch enough YouTube car reviews you will see it is a bug bear for all cars that have the safety systems that give them better ratings.

This is why more and more manufacturers are putting easy off buttons for the "safety" features in their newer models.

The issue is MG have proved they can make it behave more or less as it should but haven't bothered their arse rolling out an update/recall to fix it for all.

You are also correct various cars have the issue to varying degrees, our other two EVs work exactly as they should. The Renault from brand new (although does have a physical button if you want it off) and my Born which apparently had issues initially but was very quickly rectified with an update and has been good in the 15 months I've had it.

It again comes down to MGs reluctance to provide decent after sales and how difficult they make it for dealers to provide a decent service

Completely agree and in my case this is coupled with a leasing company who are not bothered one way or the other so I would have to get the leasing company to argue the case with MG for any software updates and life is too short.

Probably the biggest negative with a lease, as at the moment some off the lease deals available are outstanding
