MG4 Software Update Thread

So, I can place the update.zip in both the root directory and the AVN_MCU folder to use the same USB stick with the SE Engineering Menu and the Trophy’s menu? Good to know for the next time! :)

I’m going back to r38 tomorrow. This time, I’ve kept the m5d check and vipimage. Hopefully, there won’t be any issues with them.
Yes, doing so means you don’t have to worry about which release you’re on.

It’s straightforward once you know what to do, but not something you’d guess at first glance.

You can downgrade to either R33 or R38, though I’d recommend the latter.

As mentioned earlier, tap 5 times on the version number in the settings, then enter 200519 passcode.

Next, navigate to the USB update menu, then choose Update AVN.

Here’s the trick with the USB stick:

The update file must be in the AVN_MPU folder only when you’re on a Trophy release, and at root when you’re on a SE release.

So, it’s best to leave the update file at the root and copy it into a folder called AVN_MPU as well.

Hi, usually I am not an idiot, but this downgrade seems a little bit rough...

I put a folder AVN_MPU in the root of my fat32 usb stick. In this folder are the 3 update Files from the R38 (md5_check.txt, usb_ota_update.zip, vipImage.bin)

In the update menue I have the options DAB, ECU Infotainemnt, AVN MPU, MPU Telematik, ECU Telematik.

I can only update ECU Infotainment, then a upddate with 3 blue bars is running, after a reboot I am still on R63.

When trying to update the AVN MPU I get an error message with "Upgrade package from usb drive not detectet"

What am I doing wrong?

thx

From R46/R59/R63, "usb_ota_update" file have to be in AVN_MPU folder, not" in the root
So create a folder "AVN_MPU" and copy usb_ota on it.

It's just written few post ago. You have to be careful with that if you don't want to brick your unit.

Just out of curiosity ... can any SE/Standard owner who has updated to the Trophy software check to see if the Auto-Door-Lock toggle is there in the settings. If so, does it work? (That's an option that is missing from the SE/Standard software - in the UK at least - which means that the doors always auto-lock once you reach about 11 mph). I know @Rolfe would be very interested in this, given her "phobia" about the doors auto-locking with no option to disable this. :)

Yes!!! And it seems to work.

Hi everyone,

I haven't received any updates on the last service, and while I'm confident I can handle it myself, I seem to have lost the 242 pages related to this issue.

Could someone please direct me to the best post regarding a UK SE vehicle with software version R31?

Thank you!

Hey, Had my XPower for ~15 months and still love it. I've been stuck on R40 of the FICM since new and the dealer states there are no updates available. I got bored and found this thread ;)
So just updated to R63 and went for a quick spin and went through the menus. I've not noticed anything ground breaking, though the LKA now stays off between startups. Time will tell.

I got the files from this post thanks @paswotz

It appears (UK?) dealers don't do updates as part of service, they'll only do updates if you report faults or issues. Or if you pay for it.

Long story short:

  • The latest version (R38) is available online, and many users have updated their systems themselves.
  • For the adventurous, it’s possible to install R63, complete with navigation, weather forecasts, and data sharing functionality.

However, I would strongly advise against updating yourself, especially if you plan to upgrade to R63, without thoroughly reading the last 30 or so pages of the thread.

Be aware that performing an update as a consumer is not officially endorsed by MG.

Additionally, there’s currently a server issue affecting everyone, not just SE models running a Trophy release. Servers have been down for a few days now…

This thread has become way too complicated such that any useful information is way too hard to find.

Simple question.

I have an SE LR with software version 1100 R13 installed

How to i upgrade this to something like R38?

Files needed? Process? And whats this about acivation servers?

Everything seems related to Trophy or xpower and its impossible to cut through the noise here

Ta

Thank you, tomorrow I'll give it a try.
What the guide means with

"Once the USB software has been applied and the Factory reset carried out, it is important to updatethe software Via SIPS. For the R38 update, the software for the FICM (config and Calibration) and the HVAC (config and calibration) software must show ticks in SIPS."?

Several people found it hard to gather all scattered information in this thread to install 1300R63 (Trophy release) on a MG4 SE 2022/2023.

Resources:
All resources are available here:
Microsoft OneDrive

Current maps are also available here:

Risks involved:
I’m deliberately not providing an overly detailed step-by-step guide because I want users to fully understand what they’re doing.

If the procedure outlined below seems unclear, it’s a sign that you might lack the necessary knowledge to perform the upgrade safely. Feel free to ask questions, but avoid attempting anything without a clear understanding. Proceed only if you’re confident in your abilities.

Be aware that this update is entirely outside of MG’s official procedures and is not covered under warranty.

Filesystem structure:
When running a SE Release:
Place the update file (usb_ota_update.zip) at the root of the USB stick.

When running a Trophy Release:
Place the update file in a folder named AVN_MPU.

To avoid confusion or repeated file handling, you can place the update file in the AVN_MPU folder and also copy it to the root directory of the USB stick. This way, the file will be ready regardless of the release you're working with.

Procedure to update to R63:
while on a SE release
  • Go to the engineer menu / Select Upgrade AVN-SOC (This updates the MPU to 1300R63).
  • Upon restart, validate both system and navigation
  • Go to the engineer menu / Select Upgrade Infotainment System ECU (This updates the MCU to version 68.4.3.0; the latest version is unfortunately not available).
  • Upon restart, go to system > privacy policy and swipe down to enable navigation and online music.

At this point, your system should be operating normally, excluding navigation and built-in voice recognition. There should be no issues with AA/CP.
I currently do not have the VR files, so it is not possible to make the voice recognition functional.

Installing maps:
If you try to install the latest maps straight, it will fail.
I've found a workaround, but it's a wee bit of a hassle as it involves installing several maps in a sequence.

The process involves:
Installing Australian maps as a bootstrap
Installing European 22Q2 maps, it's an older version of the maps without an MD5 check.
Updating this version to 2023Q4 maps, which is the most recent version available.

The Australian maps are quick to download, unpack, and install. After installation, reboot the system. These maps are not expected to work, and you’ll encounter an error message if you attempt to launch the navigation. The purpose of installing these maps is that they reliably complete the installation process and generate a success flag, which is required to proceed with using maps.

Next, install the 2022Q2 maps. Around 95% of the way through the installation, the update will fail during the file verification step. To avoid displaying a failure flag, do not acknowledge the error. Instead, press and hold the Home button for 10 seconds to reboot the system.
this process lasts about 45 minutes

After the reboot, navigate to the app, and everything should function correctly (though the maps will be outdated).

To update to the latest maps, once 2022Q2 maps are working, you can install 2023Q4 maps. Again, the update will fail toward the end during the MD5 check. Simply reset the system by pressing and holding the Home button, and that’s it!
That's another 45 minutes worth of your time by the way!

After rebooting the system, check the version in the navigation options to confirm the update.
