Anatomy of a near miss.

Could I have done anything differently?

It's a hard one, but my old man was hot on anticipating what other road users are likely to do. So in the case of thinking that guy might also want to overtake, indicate your intentions and flash your lights.
(Is flashing your lights at people illegal in the UK?).
Yes not a good answer really, you'd be flashing your lights most of the time.

I don't claim to be perfect ... I'm merely pointing out that a bit of forethought would have avoided that near-miss completely. :)

Phew.
My forethought is 99% on the ball.

I do agree it did let me down that day. 👍

(Nostradamus might have seen him coming)

No amount of forethought would have avoided that, particular incident. You can't possibly forethink
what a idiot is gonna do. Quick reactions avoided a nasty, collision. Wonder if that White van man's recovered yet? 😉🙂👍

Sorry but I beg to differ ... overtaking whilst still on the bend after leaving a roundabout is always prone to risk; I would expect a car in the left lane to either try to move out to overtake, or drift out because the driver is crap. So the simple solution is to hold back for a few seconds. :)

I suggest watching some of Ashley Neal's videos on YouTube might be worthwhile, regardless of anyone's perceived skill level.

Have we watched the same video?
He was well off the roundabout, and there where Two lanes. That Pratt, just pulled out! That's it really. 🙄🙂👍

19s into the video is when The Brickster "boots it" exiting the roundabout, so absolutely, 100% still on the bend. 🤦‍♂️

Yes, the other driver was a prat, but this was still easily avoidable ... hold back for 3 seconds and this would have been a non-event.

Didn't say, he wasn't on the bend, said he wasn't on the roundabout. Personally dont see the problem. There were 2 lanes, regardless of the bend. The bloke was obviously gonna do the same, only he didn't look.

Well, not 'easily' avoidable, but avoided non the less!

Look, The X Power attracts a certain clientele, on the whole, those of us who are very keen on our cars and our driving.

We are also more likely to enjoy speed and the actual business of driving more than the average A to B driver.

This will bring with it a certain driving style.

My track record speaks for itself.

I am a very keen driver on any amount of wheels, be it two or *eighteen.

*Strictly speaking that's the Yanks, not us.

Walking out your door in the AM, brings with it a certain amount of risk and you are solely responsible for mitigating that risk to your person and property.

Yes, I could drive my car like Miss Daisy and never, ever, put myself in a position of conflict on the road.

Get in everybody's else's way, sure, but that's another story.

Oh, I do wish I still had the video of the old dear who just emerged from a service station into my path without even a cursory glance towards oncoming traffic!!

Anyway my point is, no matter your experience, no matter your forethought, no matter how careful you think you are being, there will always be someone, somewhere out there, waiting to just ruin your day.

From Google

Key points about UK car crashes in 2022:
Total collisions: 106,004
Fatal collisions: 1,602
Killed or seriously injured casualties: 26,956

Your doing well if you can avoid becoming a statistic IMO.

Watched the video a few times and I don't think the 1st car is entirely blameless, on the roundabout the sun is very low and I reckon he has missed his intended exit and took the next followed by the 2nd car and the our very own Mr B. He takes the left hand curve and either realises or is told, his error and in frustration lets off the gas, The 2nd car who is expecting him to speed up closes the gap and then starts to manoeuvres to overtake ( 20 secs in ) Mr B is is accelerating and at this point about 8 yards back and in the 2nd lane. The brake lights then come on car 1 ??? and the driver of car 2 panics a bit and without checking pulls out . The unexpected driving peculiarities of car 1 on a hither to empty road , in my opinion , has caused this near miss along with the bad reactions and lack of vision of car 2. Mr B may have anticipated the situation but it was all in 1-2 second time frame so would have been the victim of a prang not of his making whist the idiot in car 1 gets off scot free.
Apart from that its the best advert I have seen for having a dashcam and it also seems none of the much vaunted safety systems deemed it necessary to get involved? 🤷‍♂️

I hadn't noticed the BMW brake and slow down quickly, prompting the Nissan to pull out in front of our man until you mentioned it, so I think we should just blame the BMW driver and move on. 😁

If we're being judgemental, I'm with Bricktop here. I've seen that nearly happen so often I'm paranoid about checking my mirrors before moving out, and signalling if there's any amount of traffic about. In fact, I'd have looked, then signalled just to make sure anyone around had had time to see it, then looked again before I did that.

But I'm always in favour of blaming the BMW.
