I’ve been holding off with this in hope but time for an update.
The steering damper just hid some of the more severe shaking my car was doing so initially felt like an improvement. I decided to do my work commute on the motorway for a few days and decided I couldn’t live with it. My car is pretty bad as the entire car shakes in several speed zones and the vibration most people seem to describe comes through the floor and everything else. After anything more than about 15 minutes on the motorway it made my hands and feet feel strange.
I informed the dealership I do not accept it is a ‘characteristic’ using resources from this thread to demonstrate MG don’t actually think that and wanted to reject the car but would accept a replacement or repair but making it clear I was within 30 days.
The dealership told me MG advised the best course of action was to get the car back for investigation. They had the car two weeks, then stated they did nothing other than test drive it as MG technical eventually just said it’s a ‘characteristic’ again and that they could not accept my rejection in MG’s behalf.
I’ll not name and shame the dealership yet as I get the impression they are equally unimpressed and although refusing the rejection, I think they are trying to do the best they can short of footing the bill for a defective car that they won’t get the money back for from MG. They haven’t been obstructive beyond refusing rejection, which I suspect is coming for MG U.K. and the whole getting the car back for assessment was a time wasting exercise to make 30 day rejection process an ordeal that they can try and fight.
It’s with the finance company now and they seemed completely baffled that they are refusing the rejection.
Anyway, this is a long winded warning not to buy a new XPower or any MG for that matter if you want a meaningful warranty. If you do buy an XPower, don’t give them the chance to fix it because they won’t. They will try and drag it out until it makes your life much more difficult! Write a letter or send an email to the dealer rejecting it as unsatisfactory, return it to them and demand a refund within 14 days.
The dealer has acknowledged I rejected mine within the first 30 days, they had it more of that time than I did, and either side of the 30 day end point but still refused my rejection. If I decide to take this court they wouldn’t have a leg to stand on but obviously they are hoping I’ll give up at MG U.K.s direction.
I’ll never buy another MG after this, that’s for certain! But the dealership I’m still giving the benefit of the doubt for now.
This is the current bollocks they will eventually come back with after dragging it out: “liaising with MG technical”(not that it’s anything new):
“MG Motor UK has since advised that the feedback felt through the steering system at higher speeds is considered a characteristic of the MG4 XPower. This is due to the car’s enhanced performance setup, including an additional drive motor, and modified suspension and steering geometry. Importantly, MG has confirmed that this is not a safety or mechanical concern, nor does it indicate a manufacturing defect.”
Yeah and I’m Santa Claus!!
