MG ZS EV faulty onboard charger

Guys,

I take it that the car (even with that slow rate of charge (and we can only be talking about AC charging (I think) as DC charging bypasses on board charger and charges the battery pack Directly) the car starts off with a full SOC in the morning ,if so what is all the fuss about the charging rates. So who cares about the charging rate anyway as long as you can charge up overnight, that is all that matters. What IS important is the charge rate when charging up on a long fun and even then it's not really the charging rate you should be concerned about but how long it takes. You will not be using AC charging on a long run anyway because it's useless (too long) but the CCS, so as long as CCS charging gives you 80 percent in under 45 mins then stuff the AC charging rate. You must never forget that for battery health that slow charge is better anyway. As a mute point I ALWAYS plug my car in EVERY night no matter what the charge level is and don't care about battery health as I always want a full SOC every morning and I will let the warranty deal with any problem that may occur with the battery. So if you like the car otherwise, keep it and enjoy it for the moment and stop worrying about the battery charging rate. I myself are keeping mine until the MG e-motion comes out and jumping ship then.
I care actually for resale values. It won’t hand shake with Rapid charger either so I have multiple issues. Plus if it actually worked with rapid chargers , I have had a fast charger installed for nothing.

i care actually for resale values, and why should i be a beta tester for MG and it won’t charger on Rapid as it won’t handshake with any charger, so multiple problems for me.

I never worry myself about resale values as there is so many variables that affect a used car resale value that if it's not one thing it's another but I can under stand your concern, however the DC charging IS a problem ,sorry to hear that, hope it gets resolved soon.

Update finally got new onboard charger and charges at full rate, just took a bit longer due to corona virus. Happy customer and getting free comfort software package update as a good will gesture.

Well done...happy days

All said and done a good ending.
Charging is something we will all have to learn more about as super chargers and the like come online in the next year.
At present though my practice is slow charge 3kWh OR fast charge 7kWh/22kwh about 2 to 3 times per week. Rapid charge 50kWhDC only when travelling long distance on average 1-2 times every 8-10 weeks.
Had no problems. Never used a ultra rapid charger 100 kWh. I do not intend to try the super Ultra rapid chargers 350kWh and above as I am absolutely terrified about them setting the ZS EV on fire.
The onboard chargers in EVs contain circuit boards with software that are usually robust but like any electronics can fail. This is the first onboard charger failure for the ZS EV that I have heard about and I am sure it won't be the last but I do not think it makes the ZS EV a bad car. What is bad is the issues we are experiencing with aftercare.... some of the bad DEALERSHIPS!!!!!

Only just read this thread. Are you now happy with your car Jmac .

It couldn't have happen have happened at a worst time I suppose. Lockdown etc.

Yes was a bad time but really happy with car especially with software update. Getting a better range in this warmer weather too. So yes very happy. Thanks for asking.

Great stuff, I cant speak too highly about the car. It does everything we want..now its been de-bonged.

Yes it would be absolutely fabulous if it had another 50mile range for the occasion long journeys, but we manage OK as it is.

We have to keep reminding ourselves what good value it is, compared to similar EV's. Yes we have a few niggles...but overall its a great car. :) ...IMO

Hi All,

Once again, connect your car to ANY suitable charger without FEAR of the car bursting into flames. No matter what output the charger is capable off the car (any EV) will ONLY take what it needs and at the level the BMS will allow.

I also can't understand the adoptance of so called charging regimes. If you are lucky enough to have off road parking and a home charger ,use it EVERY time you have finished with the car for the night.

Regards

Frank

I've never worried about my car bursting into flames.....my PHEV and MG are put back on charge after every trip. I've had the PHEV for over 4 years without any major issues.

Chris,

It was another member who worried about this, hence why my salutation was "Dear All", sorry if you thought I meant yourself.

Dear All,

So I don't cause offense with my charging comment and anyone worrying about their car bursting into flames when connecting to high output DC charger just remember this, if your car,s BMS circuitry is faulty it could set alight with even a low output charger. However why worry about something that might happen, as it says in the manual if one detects any smokes flames on connecting a charger, disconnect quickly.
