Hello everyone - I'm currently driving a Golf GTE, which I actually really like, but it's just simply too small - not enough room to collect bits and pieces from DIY stores, or hold a reasonable amount of fishing gear, or even transport my wife, daughter and her boyfriend to my in-laws for Christmas.

I'm recently retired, and so my life pretty much revolves around the above, although I could possibly make things easier by avoiding my in-laws... Now there's a thought!

So, having spent a couple of hours looking at a Tesla Model X, last Thursday for £33k, I dawdled my way home with a feeling of disquiet, as going ahead with the purchase of what would undoubtedly be a lovely car would leave me with an 8 year-old car with almost 100k miles, and a serious dent in my savings account. Before I owned the Golf, I drove a Volvo XC60, which was a lovely car, but I traded it in when I retired, as I really didn't want to run a car which returned 35mpg, and wore tyres which were close to £200 a corner, and windscreen wipers which cost £238 to replace when I had no income!

Stick with me here - when I bought the Volvo, the other car I was considering was a pre-facelift HS, but I just couldn't make the deal work, hence the Volvo.

Fast forward to last Thursday, and as I would drive within a mile of my local MG dealer on the way home from my Tesla deliberation, I decided ot drop in and eliminate the MG from my shortlist. Well, blow me, there's a new kid in town - the new HS. It's a lovely car, and so my wife and I returned on Friday morning for a test drive, and before it was time for lunch, I'd popped a deposit on one, and I'm waiting for a delivery date - expected in the next two weeks.

I've decided on a HS PHEV in grey and Trophy spec.

It's not my first MG, however. When I considered the HS previously, I also owned a 1967 MGB GT. A simpler car, for sure, but probably not as good for a weekend jaunt to Tuscany!

And congrats on your new motor. The new HS does look like a lovely bit of kit. 🙂👍

Hi, hopefully you have received your car by now, be interested to hear of your experience with it.
I have ordered an HS Phev trophy as well

I’ve had it for about four months now and driven around 3500 miles.

Mostly, it’s good. It drives well, if unexcitingly, the range is good, it’s comfortable and even the stereo sounds nice.

I’ve had some issues. The windows do seem keen to mist up when it’s wet outside, and it’s been back to the dealer once. They found no fault, but it’s going back in on Monday for more investigation.

The heating generally isn’t as good as almost any other climate controlled car I’ve had (and I’ve had quite a few over about 30 years).

I’ve got an issue currently with driving on petrol - the car will quite regularly stutter, as if the engine has cut out, then it starts again and all is good for a while.

Bizarrely, the back door on the drivers side flexes its door skin when I put any pressure on the handle like, you know, when I close the door. No other doors do this.

Oh, and the bings. Oh my word, they drive me mental. There’s a new one which recently introduced itself on a two hour drive. It happens after the “pay attention to your driving” notification and is high-pitched, at about two or three beeps a second, and it can carry on for 5 minutes or longer. The first time it happened I sent a note to my dealer when I arrived at my destination explaining that I was in two minds as to if I should drive home after finishing my visit, or set fire to the car and claim the taxi ride home from my insurer.

I’ve since managed to video the beep in question and even MG don’t know what it means. Other than incoming madness.

Infotainment and satnav can be quirky - I have a screen combination where the drivers side display is dark with a light border regardless of if I’ve set my options to dark, light or auto. I drive under a long bridge after leaving home and that always turns the lights on, so both screens go dark, then light when I come out from under the bridge, and all is well after that. The speed limit warning is often wrong and I can be driving along a 70mph dual carriageway and the car will suddenly decide that I’m in a 40, so will bing at me. I glance at the screen to see why it’s binging, and that makes it bing to tell me to look at the road. I look at the road, but the binging continues and eventually becomes the rapid pings. I reach for the matches once more.

The pay attention to the road bing can happen at any time, regardless of how hard I stare at the road. If I glance in my mirror, it bings. If I look at traffic on a roundabout which I am approaching, it bings. It bings a lot.

If I remember to turn all the bings off before a journey, it’s lovely and relaxing to drive. Otherwise…

So, as I say, mostly good but not without problems. I don’t feel that the dealer I bought from is supporting me particularly well and I’ve had three people ask me in the last few weeks about the car and currently have been unable to recommend they buy one.

Oddly, my brother in law has an identical car in which he took delivery of the week before me, and he seems to have none of these issues. Make of that what you will.

Hope this helps - it’s a lovely car when it’s not binging.

Thanks for this, interesting to hear how you've got on. The alerts seem to be a common issue.
hope the dealer gets the other issues sorted out for you. Are you getting anywhere near 75 miles as claimed on EV only ?

It’s difficult to say - the range is significant, but the petrol engine starts to kick in when the battery reaches 10-15%. My previous hybrid, a Golf GTE would get to zero before burning dead dinosaurs, and that claimed 32 miles, of which I generally saw around 20-25.

The MG is far better than this. I’ve driven it mostly in winter, which isn’t the most efficient use of an EV, and it also depends on what kind of driving you’re doing. A mile at 70mph on a motorway will use more energy than a mile at 50mph on a country lane. Stop-start uses more because, you know, physics, and the temperature will affect how well the battery charges as well as how it delivers power.

All that said, it’s a good range, possibly not 75 miles, but deffo high 60’s when conditions are right.

I tend to use HEV on a motorway run, as that retains 25-30 miles in the battery for when I’m off-motorway near my destination.

Petrol is more efficient for higher speed longer runs, battery for around town and country lanes.
