charger

A battery charger, or recharger, is a device that stores energy in a battery by running an electric current through it. The charging protocol (how much voltage or current for how long, and what to do when charging is complete) depends on the size and type of the battery being charged. Some battery types have high tolerance for overcharging (i.e., continued charging after the battery has been fully charged) and can be recharged by connection to a constant voltage source or a constant current source, depending on battery type. Simple chargers of this type must be manually disconnected at the end of the charge cycle. Other battery types use a timer to cut off when charging should be complete. Other battery types cannot withstand over-charging, becoming damaged (reduced capacity, reduced lifetime), over heating or even exploding. The charger may have temperature or voltage sensing circuits and a microprocessor controller to safely adjust the charging current and voltage, determine the state of charge, and cut off at the end of charge.
Chargers may elevate the output voltage proportionally with current to compensate for impedance in the wires.A trickle charger provides a relatively small amount of current, only enough to counteract self-discharge of a battery that is idle for a long time. Some battery types cannot tolerate trickle charging; attempts to do so may result in damage. Lithium-ion batteries cannot handle indefinite trickle charging.
Slow battery chargers may take several hours to complete a charge. High-rate chargers may restore most capacity much faster, but high rate chargers can be more than some battery types can tolerate. Such batteries require active monitoring of the battery to protect it from overcharging. Electric vehicles ideally need high-rate chargers. For public access, installation of such chargers and the distribution support for them is an issue in the proposed adoption of electric cars.

    Ohme Charger

Hi all, Looking at changing our charger for an Ohme. Want to know what happened after 3 years with the data connection. Reading up, it is free then payable from 3 years +. How much is it and is there an option to connect to WiFi? Also, how do you rate it? Thanks

    MG ZS cigarette lighter help

I drive an MG ZS Trophg Connect EV. I can see what looks like a cigarette charger point but can’t figure out how to access it. I need to plug in an airpump as my tyres are all low. Anyone know how or even is a real cigarette charging point?? It’s got 12v printed on the top of the black cap.

    A positive charging story!

Hi all Had a great trip back home today, from Worcester to Maidenhead, along the A46 and M40. We have family in Worcester, so have done this several times over the past 14 months since we’ve had the MG4. One of the family has a home charger, so the usual pattern is to zip up the M40, sticking...

    Charger ICE'd - literally...

I was out and about in the far, frozen North of Scotland for most of yesterday, ultimately covering over 170 miles in temperatures that the car registered as between a balmy -2℃ (central Inverness) and a truly bone-chilling -15℃ (Loch Glascarnoch). Driving range was, as expected, decimated. Not...
  5. Not charging

I've a 2022 MG4 EV.. Public chargers aren't recognising my car. I've the tried 3 pin charger at home and it starts but then stops. When the lead is connected do I have to press lock on the dash and start.? Or do I simply plug in, lock Car ,and that's all ?

13A fuse blowing on MG4 Trophy granny charger plug.

I have an intermittent problem with a 13A fuse blowing in the 3 pin plug of a granny charger for an MG4 Trophy. The RCD on the mains supply circuit also trips on occasion. The charger plug is connected directly (no extension lead) to a standard UK 3 pin 240V socket. The charger has always used...

Granny charger using a smart plug with usage monitor

Hi all, Looking for some advice, I have a 23 plate MG ZS EV long range. We have two electric cars in our household and only one 7kW wall charger. The other car is a Citroen and doesn’t have a programmable charging time option. As a result I often use the 3pin granny charger from the garage...

    Problem charging with 7kW charger

We've just bought a 2022 MG HS PHEV & are trying to charge the EV battery using our 7kW home charger. We've connected it up okay but the light on the wall charger is staying green and not charging, when it's supposed to turn blue shortly after connecting & then begin charging. Do we need to...

    Public charging @ 20p /kWh anyone lol

My local council is putting loads of new chargers in and this one just came on line. Considering the same charger one street over is 54p I am guessing this is a mistake but as someone who relies 100% on public charging it would be rude to not take advantage before they notice.

Did The MG4 just kill My Charger?

So. I have a Project EV charger, has been installed since August 2021. Has charged my MG5 for the past few years with no bother. Picked up an MG4 this week. Decided to plug it in this morning to give it its first charge. Which was fine, charging from 50%. I did notice, on the iSmart app it was...

Leaving the trickle charger outdoors overnight/in bad weather.

Recently got an MG5 and for a variety of reasons (cost, old house wiring needing upgrade) we're going to hold off investing in a 7kW external charger. Instead we've gotten an electrician to install a regular weather-sealed 13A socket outside that we can plug the trickle charger into so we...

    Unable to schedule charger

Hi I've had a new MG4 SE LR for a week and I can't get a scheduled charge to work. I have a Zappi - no solar. I have tried scheduling from Zappi unit, Zappi app, from car and from the MG app. Nothing works unless during the active schedule time I physically get inside the car with the keys then...

Do I really need an 'proper' EV charger?

I've had my MG5 for 2 weeks now and have been charging it from the 'granny' charger. I could install a proper Type 2 charger but it's going to cost around £1000. I can charge the car to 50% overnight with the granny (it delivers 2.2 kW). 50% of charge per day (~100 miles) is more than enough for...

    Domestic charger location?

Just wondering ( apologies if this is a duplicated query). - where is your domestic charger located, in garage or outdoors ( or elsewhere?) .
