charger

A battery charger, or recharger, is a device that stores energy in a battery by running an electric current through it. The charging protocol (how much voltage or current for how long, and what to do when charging is complete) depends on the size and type of the battery being charged. Some battery types have high tolerance for overcharging (i.e., continued charging after the battery has been fully charged) and can be recharged by connection to a constant voltage source or a constant current source, depending on battery type. Simple chargers of this type must be manually disconnected at the end of the charge cycle. Other battery types use a timer to cut off when charging should be complete. Other battery types cannot withstand over-charging, becoming damaged (reduced capacity, reduced lifetime), over heating or even exploding. The charger may have temperature or voltage sensing circuits and a microprocessor controller to safely adjust the charging current and voltage, determine the state of charge, and cut off at the end of charge.
Chargers may elevate the output voltage proportionally with current to compensate for impedance in the wires.A trickle charger provides a relatively small amount of current, only enough to counteract self-discharge of a battery that is idle for a long time. Some battery types cannot tolerate trickle charging; attempts to do so may result in damage. Lithium-ion batteries cannot handle indefinite trickle charging.
Slow battery chargers may take several hours to complete a charge. High-rate chargers may restore most capacity much faster, but high rate chargers can be more than some battery types can tolerate. Such batteries require active monitoring of the battery to protect it from overcharging. Electric vehicles ideally need high-rate chargers. For public access, installation of such chargers and the distribution support for them is an issue in the proposed adoption of electric cars.

    Charger Cable

I looked into getting a cable for charging from points that do not provide one. I think what I need is a Type 2 to Type 2, 3 phase 32 amp. I would welcome confirmation or an alternative. But how long does the cable need to be to access most untethered charging points? Surely not 10...

How many amps does everyone's pull mine claims 10amps on the back yet only ever seems to get to 9amps at 240v so pulling 2170 ish Watts from the socket. Just noticed as the voltage dropped to 238v its now pulling 9.1amps. I guess its programmed to draw no more than 2.2kW?

Advice on where to put a 7kW charger point

I have on order from Octopus a charger point for the new car. What are the views on where to put it. I can mount it in the garage but does that impact house insurance ? To me this seems the best but my wife is concerned about fire risk. The garage is detached. I can mount it on an external wall...

Hi all, We are a two EV household with 1 7kW wall charger. My MG ZS EV came with a granny charger, my partners car, a Citroen EC4 didn’t. The MG comes with a charging schedule built into the software so I can make the most of our off peak charges, however the Citroen only has a delayed...

Only drawing 1.7kW from 11kW Gridserve Charger

I’ve had my car plugged in to an 11kW Gridserve unit at Ikea for about 40 minutes now and the whole time it’s only managed to draw 1.7kW. Has anybody seen this before? It’s currently 1°C outside, but I turned on battery heating just in case. I also wondered whether something might have happened...

    A positive charging story!

Hi all Had a great trip back home today, from Worcester to Maidenhead, along the A46 and M40. We have family in Worcester, so have done this several times over the past 14 months since we’ve had the MG4. One of the family has a home charger, so the usual pattern is to zip up the M40, sticking...

    Charger ICE'd - literally...

I was out and about in the far, frozen North of Scotland for most of yesterday, ultimately covering over 170 miles in temperatures that the car registered as between a balmy -2℃ (central Inverness) and a truly bone-chilling -15℃ (Loch Glascarnoch). Driving range was, as expected, decimated. Not...

    Public charging @ 20p /kWh anyone lol

My local council is putting loads of new chargers in and this one just came on line. Considering the same charger one street over is 54p I am guessing this is a mistake but as someone who relies 100% on public charging it would be rude to not take advantage before they notice.
