charger
A battery charger, or recharger, is a device that stores energy in a battery by running an electric current through it. The charging protocol (how much voltage or current for how long, and what to do when charging is complete) depends on the size and type of the battery being charged. Some battery types have high tolerance for overcharging (i.e., continued charging after the battery has been fully charged) and can be recharged by connection to a constant voltage source or a constant current source, depending on battery type. Simple chargers of this type must be manually disconnected at the end of the charge cycle. Other battery types use a timer to cut off when charging should be complete. Other battery types cannot withstand over-charging, becoming damaged (reduced capacity, reduced lifetime), over heating or even exploding. The charger may have temperature or voltage sensing circuits and a microprocessor controller to safely adjust the charging current and voltage, determine the state of charge, and cut off at the end of charge.
Chargers may elevate the output voltage proportionally with current to compensate for impedance in the wires.A trickle charger provides a relatively small amount of current, only enough to counteract self-discharge of a battery that is idle for a long time. Some battery types cannot tolerate trickle charging; attempts to do so may result in damage. Lithium-ion batteries cannot handle indefinite trickle charging.
Slow battery chargers may take several hours to complete a charge. High-rate chargers may restore most capacity much faster, but high rate chargers can be more than some battery types can tolerate. Such batteries require active monitoring of the battery to protect it from overcharging. Electric vehicles ideally need high-rate chargers. For public access, installation of such chargers and the distribution support for them is an issue in the proposed adoption of electric cars.
Recently got an MG5 and for a variety of reasons (cost, old house wiring needing upgrade) we're going to hold off investing in a 7kW external charger.
Instead we've gotten an electrician to install a regular weather-sealed 13A socket outside that we can plug the trickle charger into so we...
Hi
I've had a new MG4 SE LR for a week and I can't get a scheduled charge to work.
I have a Zappi - no solar.
I have tried scheduling from Zappi unit, Zappi app, from car and from the MG app. Nothing works unless during the active schedule time I physically get inside the car with the keys then...
I've had my MG5 for 2 weeks now and have been charging it from the 'granny' charger. I could install a proper Type 2 charger but it's going to cost around £1000. I can charge the car to 50% overnight with the granny (it delivers 2.2 kW). 50% of charge per day (~100 miles) is more than enough for...
Just wondering ( apologies if this is a duplicated query). - where is your domestic charger located, in garage or outdoors ( or elsewhere?) .
Came across a video of someones Merc going up in flames while charging at home. One of the comments was that this was why you shouldn't charge in garages...
Hi
I have mg mg4 excite 51. Electrician installed the 7kW line. Using fronius watt pilot to charge. When using it as a dumb charger, all works well. When using it in eco mode, occasionally I see the mg is charging at 0kW. Ie not charging according to ismart app. And the solar system is...
Hi all, first time post and hoping my sanity can be spared further challenge.
We have 2023 MG4EV Trophy LR and 2 chargers (an Ohme and an Easee).
Over the last 2 weeks I have had major problems charging from either charger. Each charger says car not connected/unplugged Everything says this is...
I've recently got an MG4 SE LR and had a Podpoint charger installed at home last week. All lights were showing as ready to charge (flashing blue/pink) but when i plug the car in, it goes yellow, as in ready to charge, but when i go on the Podpoint app and tell it to start charging, it changes to...
Hello, I've only had my MG4 TROPHY since September 2024.
When I first got it, it would charge up to 282 miles on my home charger. But in the last 3 weeks it's only charging to 232/238 miles.
Does anyone else have a similar problem and do you think theses something wrong with my car?
Hi, I clicked on a link which put chargers on my Google maps. I didn't like all the red lines so clicked on the tab under settings but now I can't get it back or find the link. Can anyone point me in the right direction please?
What a faffing palava.
Came back to my car to find the charger end of the socket would not release my cable.
No amount of jiggling was setting it free.
I tried to restart another charge but of course, socket No1 was being used....by me.
No amount of faffing my end was making a difference, so...
Hi All. Can anyone tell me the overall length of the granny charger which comes with the MG4 please? Socket outlet in the garage is not ideally placed and I need to understand if I need a dedicated extension lead with RCD. TIA.
MG ZS LR 22 plate at a home with 6.6Kwh of solar panels and a smart meter, 'old' (2020) PodPoint charger 7Kwh but not compatible with Octopus. I see Octopus offer a choice of 4: Zappi, Hypervolt, Ohme Home Pro and Ohme Epod. (we also have a 70 plate Renault Zoë)
Before I blow a grand I'd be...
I haven't tried it yet, but in the latest release you can now set/control the Ohme charger directly in the Octopus app.
Ah. Not quite! It shows you the charger settings in the Octopus app, but if you try and change either of them it launches the Ohme app!
I’m thinking of having a wall charger installed & as my electricity is delivered by Eon, I’m thinking of the Eon Wallbox Max.
Does anyone have experience of this?
Is this something he way to go or should I be looking at a different supplier?
Any advice gratefully received
Was looking at the Pogo charger map and spotted a new one, that's about halfway between Inverness and Aviemore on the A9 so it's another welcome stop to fill in the gaps.

So, I just finished a 220 km trip in my new MG4 Long Range. I still have enough charge to get home, but decided to trickle charge it back to full over the next day. The car came with an MG branded portable charger that plugs into a standard GPO. When I connected it, to my surprise it charges at...
Yes I know the connection ports are waterproof but as winter is coming was looking at adding some protection against the rain and snows to come so got this, magnetic padded strips, universal fit for most EVs, (fits MG4 perfectly), got mine on Amazon for speed of delivery and return if not...
My home electrics are not up to running a wall charger.
My useage is mostly local with monthly trips of around 200 round trip and annual around 300 one way, returning within a week.
Is charging via three pin plug going to be up to the job with occasional public charging station topups?
Whilst charging at the Cardiff supercharger I was told by a Tesla employee that they are reducing access to the supercharger network for non-Teslas from the end of November. Including the Cardiff and Camarthen superchargers I was using on my trip.
This is due to legislation which is requiring...
