charger
A battery charger, or recharger, is a device that stores energy in a battery by running an electric current through it. The charging protocol (how much voltage or current for how long, and what to do when charging is complete) depends on the size and type of the battery being charged. Some battery types have high tolerance for overcharging (i.e., continued charging after the battery has been fully charged) and can be recharged by connection to a constant voltage source or a constant current source, depending on battery type. Simple chargers of this type must be manually disconnected at the end of the charge cycle. Other battery types use a timer to cut off when charging should be complete. Other battery types cannot withstand over-charging, becoming damaged (reduced capacity, reduced lifetime), over heating or even exploding. The charger may have temperature or voltage sensing circuits and a microprocessor controller to safely adjust the charging current and voltage, determine the state of charge, and cut off at the end of charge.
Chargers may elevate the output voltage proportionally with current to compensate for impedance in the wires.A trickle charger provides a relatively small amount of current, only enough to counteract self-discharge of a battery that is idle for a long time. Some battery types cannot tolerate trickle charging; attempts to do so may result in damage. Lithium-ion batteries cannot handle indefinite trickle charging.
Slow battery chargers may take several hours to complete a charge. High-rate chargers may restore most capacity much faster, but high rate chargers can be more than some battery types can tolerate. Such batteries require active monitoring of the battery to protect it from overcharging. Electric vehicles ideally need high-rate chargers. For public access, installation of such chargers and the distribution support for them is an issue in the proposed adoption of electric cars.
I am currently on Octopus Agile and looking at moving to Intelligent go in the winter but wondered which charger works the best with the ZS EV Long range & the intelligent tarrif?
I don't have any charger yet so open to any suggestions
Dear MG5 EV users, I am using my car as a private hire taxi in London for the past three years, during which it has accumulated 130,000 miles (hence wo warranty anymore). However, over the last five months, I have exclusively relied on rapid (CCS) chargers due to a malfunction in my onboard...
It goes like this.
I really should get a home charger.
If I get a home charger, I need a variable electricity tariff.
A variable electricity tariff will make my daytime usage more expensive.
The answer is to get a home battery and fill it with cheap electricity overnight.
Look at your roof, if...
Good condition fully working 7kW tethered Pod Point Solo charger. I have just had it replaced with a solar model. Midlands area. Looking for around £200. Thanks!
I have an EO Mini Pro charger fitted in Feb 2020. This ceased to function in Feb 2024 coincidentally at or about the same time that Juucenet/Enel x withdrew their software support. I have had to wait until now for an engineer to come and look at it (at my cost of £92.50 + VAT). They took one...
As we all know, Sainburys are rolling out Kempower rapid chargers to most of their supermarkets. They are certainly not hanging about getting it done in Bristol. It wasn't long ago they installed 8 of them at Sainburys Emersons Green, Bristol.
Today I popped into Sainsburys Stoke Gifford...
I have recently got my MG4 Trophy LR back from repair which took almost 5 months.
It was hit while parked and repair took so long mainly due to waiting for parts.
I have owned it from new and mainly only used the granny charger with the car parked in my driveway with no issues.
First time...
Looking at getting an EV soon on lease may be even buy outright so getting a home charger installed in the next week or so. Is the above charger ok to use with MG cars?
So just for back for the show. Was quite interesting seeing all the cars up close.
Was funny I was talking to one of the ladies at the MG stand and when asked what car she had she said I would never buy an electric car lol
Also saw a 30kW portable charger. About the size of a wheeled suit...
Hi all
Hopefully picking up our trophy lr this weekend, we are currently on a standard British Gas tariff with no smart meter ,
We have ordered a Ohme pro charger and looking to switch to Octopus Go will we be paying a higher rate until we have a smart meter fitted?
Or do they put you on an...
Not sure if anyone will have had this experience or can offer any insight, but here's hoping...!
I have a British Gas/Chargemaster charge point at home, a tethered 30 amp type 1 unit that has been working fine since 2014. For the last 4 years i've been charging my car (Kia eNiro) using this...
Good afternoon folks,
I'm looking to buy one of these chargers '7kW 32A iON-Tech Small Cube Tethered charger'.
So I'm asking the forum, if anyone has experience of these, the company looks legit, it's in Hatton Garden EC1N.
Thanks in advance for any insight.
So tomorrow I'm off for my first (and unexpected) 500+ mile round trip in the MG4 (se lr). I have previously been doing it (every 6 weeks, last 4 years) in a 30kwh Soul (ChadeMo) using Electroverse / Osprey / Grideserve etc.
I really fancy trying the Tesla chargers so have downloaded the app...
Is it ok to charge in the rain? Does rain gettting in around the car plug end or onto the charging unit cause any problems? I am using IP66 external wall socket with built in RCD so no problems there. Mostly concerned with rainwater splashing in and around the car plug end.
MG HS PHEV Trophy 2...
Seems to have some good features, looking forward to seeing the pricing.

Charger at Woodall services failed to charge a couple of times. Guy with a jaguar in next bay also issues, cable locked into car and would not charge.
I called the AA he reset the numerous, unknown, error messages and all good. Disconecting 12v battery, ok only for a minute or so, didn't fix.
Hi all!
I am new here and also a new driver! My first car is the MG4 electric, so I am very pleased with it. We had it for now 2 months.
I am still learning how to deal with the features of the car, etc and I am currently trying to master a bit better the issue with charging.
I came this...
Hi all,
Currently on BG fixed one v32, but looking at switching to the electric driver v5 tariff (looks like it'll be much cheaper to charge overnight). The other option is the Price Promise but by my calculations it'll be more expensive overall.
Hive/Freecharge so far is a joke - 50/50 as to...
Hi all, finally our fleet department has confirmed that my company car is ready to be delivered which is great news. Sadly, the charger hasn’t been installed at my house yet (this is arranged by my firm for BP to install and I’m struggling to get any reply from them regarding install dates)...
