Apple carplay?

Hi, after months struggling with my new iPhone, in desperation I tried my daughters discarded 7, bingo! It worked like a dream and continues to do so. Best part being that if I ever have it stolen, the phone that is there’s nothing of any personal info on it apart from a dodgy email address and the only apps being sat nav, maps and radio players, happy days!
Was wondering is this a specific problem to iPhones iOS system and whether it’s better suited to an Android phone? Any Android people out there experiencing any similar problems?

Not really - just anecdotal evidence of success using their cables. :)

PS - I'm not using an Anker cable and without issue.
Yes, this may be partly my fault because I recommended Anker braided cables earlier on with CarPlay - but I already used them for other purposes and so it wasn't as a result of trying other options.

That said, my Apple cables didn't work, the connection kept dropping. But I only tried Apple cables when I first got the car (14 months ago) and there have been a load of updates since.

So if you having problems (won't connect, keeps disconnecting), trying a different cable is worth it and Anker cables do seem to reliably work for people. But if you still get problems either the car or your phone may need an update.

This is untrue - I have used an el-cheapo Amazon Basics one successfully for 6 months and more without a single issue.
? well, pop over and I’ll show you all my cables that don’t work!
Did you think if yours works, automatically everyone’s does!? ?
Starting to think Anker have some members here on their payroll ?
I couldn’t care a less WHICH one works, quite frankly I wish the one ( or the 26 I bought after that) I originally had worked!
The fact that the Anker one does work is totally irrelevant.
It’s so funny you would care about a label on a cable and make up conspiracy theories about it ????
No one’s on Ankers payroll, it could be called banana and I would care just as little ?

No.

If you have 26 cables that don't work I'd be looking at what the common factor is there: your devices.

Perhaps start with cleaning out the ports. They fill up with gunk very easily which makes the cables not sit properly and the internal connections poor because they don't fit in properly.

I've noticed my Iphone Apple Car Play is much better since getting a short cable and waiting about 40 seconds after (i) pressing the brake pedal (into READY mode) and (ii) connecting the Iphone cable before actually pressing the CarPlay button on the Infototainment screen to enter CarPlay.

Maybe pure coincidence or luck but it seems to be working far better now for me (and thats with a cheap, short non Anker cable too !! that someone on here recommended - link below))

Only occasionally does it fail to connect but reinserting the cable a second time has always worked and once connected it's never lost connection.

The only bug I've found is that after the camera screen appears when indicating the Carplay screen sometimes needs two attempts to return when pressing CarPlay button if needed. The first attempt results in a blank screen but pressing Home and then Carplay buttons a second time always seems to return to the CarPlay screen. I'm pretty sure that's a display bug not loss of connection.

The car was brand new, it had 14 miles on the clock, I reckon the ports were clean.

I’m a great fan of Anker products, so the first cable I bought was Anker… didn’t work. Second, I tried a £100 wireless interface which had great reviews…. didn’t work ?. Then bought a bog standard £15 Apple cable… it worked! This is just my experience, not trying to say this is the ONLY one that works!

As most people have said, make sure the Info system has properly started before plugging in your iPhone

My older Samsung worked almost always, but my wife's newer Samsung dropped out frequently and improved with shorter/better quality cables.

Best of all is using a portable USB hub which many people have in their laptop case but hardly ever use. The one I found unused in a drawer, is very old and was made by Startech. It has a USB plug, 4 inch cable, 4 USB sockets and is powered from the USB plug.

MG says it may not work through a hub, but if you have one or can borrow one to test it, I'd give it a go.

There's a couple of reasons why it might help:
The USB cable length is only 4 inches plus whatever is behind the dashboard.
The timing of the messages from phone to car will change.

As a bonus, adding music on a stick via the hub seems to work at the same time.

I got one of these:-
works well on my 2022 SR model / iphone 12 - all wireless, no need to press any buttons on the MG (as just comes up with carplay each time as I move off), and can leave the phone in my pocket ~ £35

Interesting that it works with your Iphone still in your pocket. Is your phone screen locked at the time ? My normal wired connection only seems to link up and work initially if my Iphone is unlocked.

Wired CarPlay will work with your phone locked, but you need to allow it in Settings.
Depending on what model iPhone you have it’ll be under either
  • “Touch ID & Passcode” or “Face ID & Passcode”, and you need to enable “Accessories” under “Allow Access When Locked”
  • or “General” then “CarPlay” and “Allow CarPlay while locked”

same as for the wired CarPlay then

There are several threads on this. Have you searched on 'Apple' ?
One essential is that you must use a high speed USB cable. One which has a black or blue plastic insert not white.
I don't understand this. Apple lightning cables are all USB2.0. Every single one of them, even USB C lightning cables are USB2.0. It doesn't matter who makes them, whether Anker, Belkin, Apple or whoever, they all use USB2.0 So the speed is USB2.0. The colour of the insert makes no difference. What does matter is that it must be MFI certified.

I think he was referring to the phone, not the car.
