Auto car wash experience

Don't you realise that @Crawfyp is a detailing enthusiast? He was agreeing with what you were saying (albeit in a sarky way about our venerable [you're only as old as you feel] lady) ;)

I wasn’t being sarcastic about @Rolfe at all by the way! She makes excellent contributions, plus I wouldn’t dare.

My point was more about the expectation that notoriously difficult to remove bug splatter could even be expected to be removed at an average hand car wash (or auto car wash or with a pressure washer alone). Anyway, lots of experts around, I’m retiring to my garage now to alphabetically organise my products. Peace and love to all.

Different expectations, is all. I only want to keep the car reasonably decent, knowing that by the time I have driven it home from wherever it was washed it will have begun to get dirty again. Even if I shone it to perfection on my drive, by the time I'd driven it anywhere (and that's what it's for, not for showing off on my drive), ditto.

Given that my local area is distressingly short of hand car wash businesses and even the auto car washes are something like 14 miles away, I modify my standards appropriately. In winter I may be happy to hide the car in the garage in the hope that seeds might germinate in spring, but now, while it's new and the weather is fine, I'll make at least a token effort.

Then get back to hoovering and dusting and cleaning the bathroom.

I drive dirty cars. My last car got washed once a year by the Peugeot dealer, when it was serviced. And once more before I sold it.

But I am now wondering whether the MG's various camera windows need on occasional clean.

Mine tends to wash it every time it's been in for warranty work (e.g. software recall, oil leak fix, etc.)

I can barely remember getting my car washed by a service garage.

It did get washed by the porter at a swanky spa hotel where I stayed for a couple of nights the other week, though!

Keep the winscreen clean where the camera etc is otherwise you'll start to get error messages. It's also worth keeping the painted bit in the centre under the front number plate clean too.

I used the garage in the village for all the servicing for my VW. Great servicing, but a wash and a hoover was not part of the deal. I can't remember it being done when I was in England with any of my previous cars either, and they were dealer-serviced. (The Ford dealer in Welwyn Garden City was an absolute rip-off. I only realised this when I moved to Sussex.)

I've always expected a wash and a hoover with a dealer service. We make a point of emptying the crap out of the interior so they can do it. It's usually not all that thorough, but it's something. I think it depends on whether there's someone junior around with time on their hands.

I'm reluctant to intrude on the detailing thread, but what's going on there is awsome bordering on the surreal. I want to marry one of these guys and then interest him in detailing the kitchen, and the bathroom, and the living room, and the hall, and - well, you get the idea.

Me, I'm happy to pay for a professional car valet every so often. There's enough cleaning to be done in life without getting obsessive about the car as well.

No offence, but you’re assuming all this talk results in us spending hours and hours cleaning.
For me, it’s almost the opposite.
Using the right ‘stuff’ means I can keep our cars clean without much effort at all.
Where someone else may be having to handwash it every time, I’m just having to spray stuff on, leave it a bit and spray it off.
Hey presto I’m doing something else in less time than someone using a bucket, or you driving to the local handwash and queuing.
And I know what I’m using is safe, whereas you’ve admitted you don’t know what they sprayed on your car.
PH safe, or just some random acidic stuff?
Hmmm….

It's not just how it looks, claying a car gives you a tactile experience!
