Hi everyone. Sadly, my 2020 Renault Zoe has been totalled by an elderly driver who had a mini-stroke whilst pulling out of a side road......

I've had a drive in an MG5 EV and enjoyed it (non face-lift) - one of my friend's is head over heels in love with his. Would the MG5 be a worthy choice?

I do 18,000 miles a year and would be looking to keep the car for at least 2.5 years. Would the car survive this? Are they both costly to service etc? Am I setting myself up for a fall buying a car without a warranty?

Would it be worth getting a 3rd party warranty?

With my budget I would be looking at a 3 year old + model with around 30,000 miles on the clock.

Many thanks in advance 👍

The car has a 7 year warranty, why do you think you'll be without one? Just need to ensure the one you buy has full service history, so it's honoured if needed.

Apart from a few generally easily fixed known issues, they're virtually indestructible so far. One user has done over 150k in one over 3 years with virtually nothing going wrong.

Hiya Paulie. I did have a look at the seven year warranty PDF and it seems 99% of the car wouldn't be covered by the time I bought it (the battery I think has an eight year warranty)

Car warranties are pretty bad tbh

However the warranty will cover the really expensive stuff like motor and battery

The nice thing about the mg5 is that underneath it’s a pretty simple car, no crazy suspension or unusual gizmos so it’s not madly expensive to run.

If you look through the forum you will see a few nibbling issues like the rear washer pipe but very few catastrophic failures

You asked about service costs - in my experience the pre-FL was very cheap, but I was able to get a "low mileage" service (seemed a bit random what that was defined as, but I never did over 10k miles in one year) - 1st was £47 IIRC, 2nd a bit over £100 and the third was going to be £150 incl MOT - all MG dealers. It was worth shopping around for it though.

I guess your 18k miles will be more but there really isn't a lot to do in a service - no costly oil change etc! And of course if you use MG service you get a year of AA membership thrown in!!

Yes , as touched on by an earlier post, make sure you get the full service history . This should also log the SOH of the battery . It shouldn't be an issue as long as the car has been serviced in compliance with the schedule . If it hasn't ,you may find that the warranty is void

Bear in mind service intervals are 12 months or 15k, so if you're doing 18 it will be more frequent. If you look at service plans on the MG website you can start setting one up, and it will show you what the cost is before you get to the bit where you hand money over.

In my experience the car won't let you down but the dealer network might, so it's also worth checking the dealer threads on here to see if people have experience of your local or preferred dealer.

I've just bought a 3 year old MG5 for £14k. Quoted £750 for 3 years of services which seems pretty steep compared to what others on here have quoted.

Thanks everyone for the responses. I've just received confirmation that my Zoe is a write off, so I'm definitely in the market for a new EV now.

Do any of the MG5s come with auto breaking assist? (anti collision camera....)

Do any of the range come with tinted rear windows?

And where's the best place to get a spare wheel for the MG5?

My 2024 MG5 Trophy LR has tinted rear windows, I bought a spare wheel & kit from the MG Dealer when I bought the car in December 2024. It has Active Emergency Braking (AEB).

I'd love a newer MG5, but sadly my budget won't reach that far. Do the older versions have AEB?

Yes pfl has auto braking

I bought a full size spare for about 100 quid off eBay from a breakers

Get a late LR pre-facelift, it has many of the improvements of the FL but proper buttons for things like heaters, heated seat. It has AEB but seem to remember it only works under 35 mph.
