I am coming to the end of my 3 year lease with my pre-FL MG5 Long Range Exclusive. It has been leased though salary sacrifice. It has been used as our primary family car (we also have a 2015 Honda Cr-V) and covered 25,000 miles so far (still on original tyres and lease is up in May). I have 2 young kids. a partner and a small dog (spaniel) whose crate fits easily in the boot.
We have all really enjoyed having the MG, and we will be sorry to see it go. It has been very reliable, very comfortable and just generally fits our life well. We would happily recommend it, though probably would recommend the facelift version for the improved app, headlights, ability to take a towbar, etc.
We considered three options for what to do next and I'll provide some detail here but note that my scheme includes zero deposit, fully comp insurance, Servicing, Tax, MOT, tyres, etc. Costs shown are gross deduction and I am an advanced / top rate taxpayer in Scotland.
1. Extend our lease to a 4th year
This would have seen my Gross payment increase from £390pcm (~£210pcm net) to $510pcm (~£305pcm net) for what is now a 3 year old car.
2. Give the car back and buy a 2nd hand car
We looked hard at this, and I was leaning toward buying a 2023 Kia Niro 4 but in the end the opportunity cost and depreciation meant that total cost over 3 years did not compare favourably to getting another car through the scheme.
3. Give the car back and lease another car from the scheme.
This is what we have decided to do. We have ordered a VW iD.3 Pure Match (52kWH) at £504pcm Gross for 3 years. This works out at ~ £300pcm net.
I did not consider buying our MG5 as I wanted a car that could take a towbar which is not really an option in UK for the pre-FL MG5.
The iD.3 worked out as the cheapest car on my work scheme that met our needs:
1. 5 doors and decent backseat room for kids in large car seats (kids are 9yo and 5yo)
2. At least 230 miles WLTP range. 250miles has been more than enough for us and we still have an ICE vehicle if we need it.
3. Fit dog in boot
4. Heated seats
I'll be sorry to see the MG5 go, but I am looking forward to trying something new. I think I'm most existed by the ability to pre-heat the steering wheel, that feels like proper luxury!
Anyway all the best to you all: I've enjoyed browsing these forums and occasionally contributing.
